A true masterpiece
I rarely take the time to write reviews for kdramas or cdramas, but this one is something else entirely. It hits on a whole different level, every scene, every moment feels meticulously crafted. From the writing to the direction, from the cast’s performances to the production design, everything comes together in the most remarkable way. Huge respect to the entire team: the writers, the producers, the crew, and especially the actors who brought these characters to life with such depth. This is truly another level of storytelling. Nothing Groundbreaking but Very Solid
While very solid, there is nothing particularly special about Pursuit of Jade/Zhu Yu.In terms of story it's nothing unique, the plot twists were are very predictable, the characters and their motivations unoriginal. The characters themselves are for the most part charming and well acted, if nothing that I haven't seen in a drama before, and the romance is believable. The chemistry between Fan Changyu and Xie Zheng is great and despite the frustrating back and forth they have in the later half of the show, they are very easy to root for.
Overall nothing was new, nothing was bad, and if you are looking for an easy costume romance you don't have to think much about, then this is a great show to pick up. Fan Changyu is a great character and is the best Tian Xiwei has ever looked and acted in my opinion so I am enjoying it, but I would probably not rewatch.
I would like to note that the Direct did put in some really cool scenes with the camera work and transitions. They were sparse but very effective when thrown in. I don't want to spoil them since some are important in the story itself but I really enjoy them when they came up, they actually encourage me to keep watching when the plot drags a bit.

Her strength doesn’t come from perfection, but from her ability to endure and adapt. In contrast, the male lead offers a layered performance, gradually revealing depth beneath his reserved exterior.
Visually, the drama delivers a pleasant experience, though not without flaws. While the costumes and settings maintain a consistent aesthetic, the excessive use of filters occasionally takes away from the authenticity of the scenes. Despite this, the emotional weight of the story remains intact.
What truly defines Pursuit of Jade is its tone. It doesn’t seek attention through dramatic twists but instead earns it through sincerity. It focuses on the overlooked moments—the quiet sacrifices, the small acts of care, and the gradual healing of two individuals bound by circumstance.
In the end, Pursuit of Jade is not just a story of love, but of growth. It reminds us that sometimes, the most meaningful relationships are not the loudest, but the ones that slowly and quietly find their place.

Cinematic masterpiece that feels like truly finding jade
Slow-burn chemistry, rich backstories for well-rounded characters, catchy OSTs, and multi-layered plot that have the most insane and satisfying buildup. This drama has set a new standard for historical Chinese dramas.The most defining aspect of this drama is the cinematography. Truly a feast for the eyes and heart. Yet, the visuals would have been nothing without the leads. Changyu's growth from butcher to the Flower-Adorned General is so satisfying to watch, she's unapologetically herself. And here comes Zheng, the ultimate downbad husband who's only soft for his wife. Their characters are so lovable. They moved me to tears in laughter and heartache.
It's rare to come across a drama that is perfect in all aspects. It truly felt like you were living the legend of Changyu and Zheng in their journey as the ultimate power couple who stands as pillars of justice in the Daiyin.
Ultimately, it is a tale of beauty. The beauty of love for friends, family and the fated one you will find in every lifetime. A story so beautiful that will leave you breathless until the last episode.

MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR PURSUIT OF JADE !!!This drama was one of my absolute favorite historical dramas that I have watched this year! It hooked me right from the very first episode, which is something that a lot of dramas don't always do for me. I adored everything about this drama, from the visuals to the story. The characters were ones that will definitely stick with you, even after the drama is over! Waiting for new episodes to drop was torturous, but it was so worth it! The acting in this drama by every single cast member was phenomenal!
The OSTs of this drama are absolutely gorgeous as well. I also adored how female centric this drama was. It really focuses on Fan Changyu as a character. I absolutely adored the friendships that she formed throughout this drama, especially with the Northwest Pig Slaughter Squad, the Grand Princess, and the father-daughter bond with Grand Tutor Tao Yi. I also wanted to give recognition to Snow Kong , who portrayed Yu Qian Qian, and Deng Kai, who portrayed Qimin/Su Yuanhai. Their acting was phenomenal!!
Though I wasn't necessarily a big fan of the way their relationship was romanticized, as Qimin's character is very much a walking red flag, I was blown away by the levels of emotion and depth these actors had in portraying their respective characters.
Qian Qian is such a strong female character who endures literal hell to save her son, Bao'er (who is so so precious, just like Ning), and even forces herself to do horrible things just so that she can find a way to escape. It definitely hurt my heart to see her do those things, but it also showed me just how strong a mother's love can be. She was willing to do anything to save her son, even at the cost of her own life. She is absolutely one of my favorite female characters, and I also adored her friendship with Changyu as well, and the way that they care for one another.
Qimin, while his character scared me, the acting by Deng Kai in this role was incredible!! He really suits the "villain" role so well! The levels of emotions that he could portray was insane! He did absolutely amazing in this role, and I honestly am thinking of watching other dramas that he's in!
Gongsun Yin and the Grand Princess (Qi Shu)??? OMGGG!!! Their romance honestly hurt my heart so much:((( Their love story was so angsty, and I'm really glad these two got their happy ending as well! I do wish we got a bit more of them in this drama, but I am glad that they did eventually end up together! I also adored both of their characters individually, with Gongsun being Xie Zheng's Strategist and also his closest friend. Their bickering was absolutely hilarious! I also love how strong of a character Qi Shu is as well. She is intelligent and also is not afraid to speak her mind, which is one of the things that I love about her. (literally NO toxic female friendships in this drama and I loved that!!!)
Fan Changyu is one of my absolute favorite female leads ever, and Tian Xiwei did an excellent job of portraying her and bringing her to life! She knows what she wants and she goes after it! And while Changyu does have a strong personality, and can definitely fend for herself, we also get to see her softer side shine through. I love that contrast of her character!
While she is tough and formidable in her own right, Changyu still possess a soft heart that deeply cares for her comrades and her loved ones. She will do everything she can to protect them. She is a protector through and through. This brings me to my next point: her relationship with Xie Zheng (Yan Zheng).
Xie Zheng has been on the battlefield from a young age, and he has known nothing but destruction and death. He experienced it firsthand when his mother took her own life, and again in the atrocities on the battlefield. His father, (at least from what is shown in the drama), didn't seem to be around a lot? Perhaps he was busy with military duties and was rarely home? I feel like Xie Zheng was definitely closer with his mother. Ultimately, Xie Zheng is someone who feels that everybody in his life eventually leaves. He is someone who was raised to be a warrior, and eventually, the Marquis of Wu'an, who is formidable and ruthless. As the Marquis, Xie Zheng is cold-hearted and merciless. He is very feared as well. He hasn't really known the warmth of love, as it was taken from him very early on in his childhood.
For me, the way I see it is that Xie Zheng's "source" of light in his life is Changyu. She was the one who wasn't scared of him, and who brought him such fond memories and joy throughout their time in Lin'an. At first. we see that Xie Zheng is very much guarded and closed off, but, as time goes on, he starts to warm up a bit, and we even see him becoming fond of Ning. Changyu was the one who brought him all this light, and gave him this pure love that he was scared of losing, which is one of the reasons that he decided to conceal his identity from her, for he was afraid that she would leave him if she knew who he really was.
Xie Zheng and Changyu work so well together because they both respect each other, and also see each other as complete equals. Xie Zheng quietly supports her and provides her with a quiet strength that Changyu can lean on when she needs to. He allows her to pursue what she wants, and never tries to diminish her in any way. For instance, during the Battle at Lucheng, when Changyu and Xie Zheng are standing together on the battlefield, he tells her to get behind him so that he can protect her, but Changyu refuses.
She tells him that she will not hide behind anyone, and that she will fight. Xie Zheng doesn't even try to protest, allowing Changyu to fight alongside him and his army. For me, this showed just how much Xie Zheng respects Changyu in that despite his fear of her getting hurt (despite knowing that she can take care of herself), he doesn't try to prevent her from doing what she wants. As much as he loves her, he also respects her and sees her as a complete equal to himself. Their love is fierce and unyielding as it is tender, as we see in the scene where Xie Zheng comforts Changyu after she wakes up from a nightmare.
Overall, this drama was absolutely incredible, and I highly recommend you watch it!! It made me go through all the emotions, and I will forever think about this drama <3 TAKE ME BACK TO LIN'AN !!!

Perfect Escape from the World Where We Sadly Live
This was exactly the kind of escapism I was looking for right when I needed it. It was definitely historical/fantasy/romance, since it wasn't historically accurate, but I didn't need it to be. It was a beautiful story told with beautiful people, in a beautiful setting. Both leads were very good actors, and I can say that, as I know not one word of Mandarin, they were still able to convey complex feelings through facial expressions, tone, and movement. I am certain that the novel holds more detail with the political aspects, but I was fine with what it had. The slow build of tension between all the couples was both entertaining and frustrating in the best possible way. Although the ending episodes were rushed, I understand that, having watched many series in my lifetime, and of course as a fan of Game of Thrones. Unlike some reviewers, I was fine with the "What If" extra scene, and took it at face value, showing that no matter the circumstances, the right people will end up in your life, maybe at the right time, maybe at the wrong time, but maybe we spend lifetimes in countless worlds trying to get it right. Yes, had the uncle made different decisions, lives would have been changed, but fate would still prevail. Good thing we have many lives to make it work. All in all, a beautiful story. Not to everyone's taste, but you never know unless you find out for yourself.Was this review helpful to you?
Tian Xiwei ❤️ as Fan Changyu delivers a standout performance that breaks her sweet image. She is gritty and practical moving with a weight that makes her profession feel authentic. Zhang Linghe ❤️as Xie Zheng brings a nuanced vulnerability to the fallen marquis role. His chemistry with Tian Xiwei is a slow burn based on mutual respect and shared trauma. Supporting actors like Li Qing and Ren Hao provide strong humor and depth to the political intrigue.
Directed by Zeng Qing Jie the show has a high quality cinematic feel. Filmed on location in Taizhou the scenery is rich and atmospheric using natural lighting rather than heavy filters. The set design for the village and butcher shop is detailed and realistic giving the world a tactile lived in quality. The action choreography is heavy and impactful matching the characters backgrounds and keeping the stakes feeling real.
Pursuit of Jade is a rare gem that treats its characters with intelligence. It is a must watch for those who want a strong independent female lead and a romance built on partnership.

Male lead sucks
This might seem petty but I dropped it because of how Xie Zheng handled their first separation. I was giggling and screaming in episode 17 because finally there's a kissing scene after all that disturbed-almost-kissing scenes that could have been better but Xie zheng kissed her because he was mad... ಠ_ಠ all of the butterflies i was having flew away (there's a multiple occasion where the first kiss could have been better but they chose this), I thought he was gonna confess or at least give some word of affirmation after that kiss... The Best Scripted Historical In 2026!!
I will miss the Marquis of Wu’an & the Flower Crowned General forever!!This was one of those shows that I started watching out of boredom, simply because I had nothing else to watch. But once I started, I was instantly hooked. Obviously, the main attraction is the butcher girl who rises to become a first rank Female General of Great Yin. Along the way, she saves a Marquis, kills rebels and emerges victorious. Tian Xi Wei shines in her rendition of Fan Chang Yu. The role seems tailor-made for her. Zhang Ling He plays her sidekick. It seems funny, but the mighty Marquis of Wu’an does seem slightly less majestic when compared to Fan Chang Yu’s butchering skills. They make such a formidable couple, you wonder who is more swoon worthy. Their fake marriage seems too real. Xie Zheng willingly turns into Yan Zheng, a matrilocal husband. For him, it is a journey of retribution, but for Fan Chang Yu, it is a sojourn of self-discovery. Somewhere down the line, boundaries begin to blur and romance is redefined!!

Was really good for most of it.
I liked it a lot. The production was good, filmography and acting was amazing, the story from the start was pretty good. But i couldn't finish it. I tried really hard to finish it but couldn't. I would say, till the mid or if try really hard, then a little more than half of the story was very captivation, i was really getting into their love and also the action scenes in between, but then somehow the romance got carried away and it seemed like i have all of a sudden started to watch another action drama, all the tension between the lead characters got away and it seemed like they were trying hard to be relevant, there fights didn't make me feel much (but the filmography and direction as great!!). I wanted to feel their love and compassion but I started to rush through the episodes. I skipped more than i watched for a couple of episodes but at the end gave up all together. But then; i thought maybe I am just expecting too much and what if it get's better so i gave it another try and was able to watch till the episode where he says "kiss me". It was a good one. but that as it. couldn't watch more.Tbh, I wanted to watch this show for a long time and the reason being the actors, production & STORY. We don't get to see these kind of story with this great production as we saw in the trailer. We do get to watch many historical dramas, but where the story hits different because it's displayed in such a way with the actors that look great, the atmosphere created that captivates one's eyes and is consistent throughout, the story delivers what kind of story i was longing for- it being able to fill the void that other dramas of the same category couldn't for a long time, i am able to feel the tension, the romance that the characters are feeling, where i am anticipated for what's going to happen next... Yeah, so these kind of dramas are very few. These kind of dramas are the one's that i am able to finish. So, i expected the same from this one. Unfortunately was dissatisfied from the last few episodes. But I was able to experience the above feeling for the most of it
Hence, most of the story was great, they curated the characters super well, the costumes were great, the visuals were awesome, the songs were moving, the acting was awesome, production as great, the filmography, angles of shots were great, the set looked soooo good-was very dreamy and not fake. It's just that the part that hangs everything together, i.e, the story started to feel less interesting as the story progressed after about 50% of the show, so i couldn't watch it anymore.

Watch because everyone is doing it glad i did
It’s been a while since I last watched a historical drama—the last one was back in 2020, titled *Blessed Girl*. It was actually my first historical drama, but I didn’t enjoy it much, so I stopped watching that genre altogether. It’s also been a long time since I watched a C-drama, and I was kind of skeptical about starting one again because I wasn’t sure if it would be worth my time.Then suddenly, this series started showing up all over my FYP and it caught my interest. For the first time in years, I found myself wanting to watch this kind of drama again. There were definitely some parts that annoyed me, especially when certain characters reacted in ways that tested my radical side, but overall it was really good. It was also my first time watching Zhang Linghe, and I’m glad this was the first series I saw him in.
