The best of the best!

If this is your first Chinese drama, I pity you. It's because your standards will be very hard to reach, Anyways, my rating is purely based on my own standards. In this way, I can confidently say that the story is really great. The first half of the drama is really rewatchable the latter however should have been done better. I adore their life in Lin'an maybe that's the reason why I don't want to watch the political side at the end. The acting was superb! I already watched almost all of ZLH's dramas, I am proud to say that he really showcased his micro-expressions well here. And gosh! He is so handsome here. Thanks to the director and the camera man. He is already handsome but the angles did him justice. TXW is such a wonderful actress and so cute! I mean, she acted so well! I haven't watch her dramas yet so I am not able to assess her. But based on what I saw, she is very good. The OSTs were so good, too!

If the writer, director, cameramen, the actors and actresses can read this, I beg you all to make more dramas with the same casts!

THANK YOU! <3

How is a jade's true value measured?

once upon a snow
i found a lost soul
when i had nothing
but just a hairpin

little did i know
it changed my whole

fates entwined
light was shined
i took down the veil
and the jade revealed

this is a love story. it cannot be compared to another with a different theme. it sparked and ignited our tender hearts as we shared YZ's & FCY's joys and sorrows along their journey. and it's amazing how a simple love story can then melt our hearts and become a memorable masterpiece for us drama fans to cherish. kudos to the director and as many had described, the aesthetic shots and editing he brought to life and wonders. yes, the storywriting wasn't ideal; i was so disappointed with episode 30 it dug a hollow space in my heart for awhile. a lot of deux ex machina unfortunately toward the end of the story. the first half was good and oh yes, i absolutely love the comedy. the side characters are so wholesome and awesome; particularly the little girl, ning mei mei is the true jade for me :) this series has the complete package- i love every single bit of it; both its strengths and weakness.

I loved it

If you are looking for a historical C-drama that masterfully balances high-stakes political intrigue with a deeply grounded romance, "Pursuit of Jade" (逐玉) is a must-watch. Starring Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei, this 2026 series breathes fresh life into the "fake marriage" and "fallen noble" tropes, delivering a cinematic experience that feels both grand and intimate.
A Refreshing Power Dynamic
The show’s greatest strength lies in its unconventional leads. Tian Xiwei delivers a powerhouse performance as Fan Changyu, a butcher’s daughter who is as practical as she is fierce. Unlike typical "damsels," she isn't just a love interest; she eventually wields her butcher’s knife on the battlefield, becoming a formidable force in her own right. Opposite her, Zhang Linghe shines as Xie Zheng, the Marquis of Wu’an. He portrays the transition from a broken, hidden noble to a ruthless general with incredible nuance, utilizing micro-expressions that capture his internal struggle between his quest for vengeance and his growing love for Changyu.
Cinematic Excellence
Visually, the drama is a "visual odyssey." From the serene, snowy landscapes of Lin’an to the sprawling, gritty battlefields, the cinematography is breathtaking. The production quality is evident in every frame, particularly during the action sequences which are choreographed with a visceral energy rarely seen in idol dramas. The use of traditional instruments like the Suona in the soundtrack adds a haunting, epic layer to the Marquis’s marching scenes.
Why It Works
The Chemistry: The slow-burn romance feels earned. Their "marriage of convenience" evolves naturally through shared hardships, creating a "power couple" dynamic where both characters are equally indispensable.
Narrative Pacing: While the political subplots are complex, the story remains cohesive, focusing on the pursuit of truth regarding a 17-year-old conspiracy.
Supporting Cast: The villains and side characters (especially the two Princes) are well-developed, ensuring that the stakes feel real.
"Pursuit of Jade" isn't just another costume drama; it is a beautifully written, expertly acted tale of justice and devotion. It’s a rare gem that honors its genre while boldly carving out its own identity.

A good watch

I don't want to say much, as there are many reviews already. I wanted to also give it a 10/10 to increase the rating. I think it was one of the best period/historical cdrama I ever watched, if not the best. Second best would be The Prisoner of beauty, the Double (although not so much romance there) and Love in the Clouds (although this is fantasy).
Enjoy the watch!

A Standout Masterpiece: The Breakthrough Power of Pursuit of Jade

I have watched Chinese dramas for many years, and Pursuit of Jade stands out as one of the most refined and emotionally resonant productions in recent memory. The narrative is tightly constructed—every episode serves the story, deepening the mystery behind each character while maintaining strong pacing. The series balances humour, romance, family, political intrigue, action, and personal growth with remarkable precision.

At the heart of the story is the extraordinary journey of the female lead. Her rise from hardship to influence resembles the strength and emotional depth found in the heroines of Judith McNaught classic novels. She is not carried by beauty or privilege; she survives through intelligence, loyalty, strategy, and an unwavering sense of responsibility. Alongside her closest companion—two orphaned girls fighting for dignity and stability—their evolution from poverty to power forms the emotional core of the show.

Breakthrough Performance of the Female Lead
The female lead is the undeniable gem of this series. Her performance is a breakthrough—powerful, expressive, and deeply affecting. Her large, emotive eyes make every scene hit with precision, especially when she cries or confronts danger. She transitions effortlessly between cute, fierce, tender, and commanding. That duality is her greatest strength, and she embodies it with authenticity.

Her portrayal feels grounded and human. She is a protector, a strategist, a friend, a warrior, and a woman capable of deep pain and equally deep courage. It is surprising that only the male lead is widely trending because her performance is equally deserving—if not more so—of attention. She anchors the emotional weight of the entire narrative.

Acting and Cast Chemistry
The series benefits from a strong ensemble. Many cast members were unfamiliar to me, which made the viewing experience refreshing and unfiltered by prior expectations. Their acting is compelling, and their chemistry—particularly within Lian’an—is exceptional. The bonds, conflicts, and loyalty within this community feel authentic, making it easy for viewers to fall in love with the characters.

Assessment of the Male Lead
Having seen the male lead’s earlier works, I can see clear growth; however, some of his acting patterns from previous roles remain noticeable. His character—a formidable god of war and marquis who does not bend even to the emperor’s decree, yet later adapts to rural life—is still lacking and requires both authority and emotional nuance.

While he delivers strong moments, the portrayal occasionally lacks the consistency expected of a high-ranking military figure. The commanding presence and gravitas typical of such a role sometimes feel muted. His most convincing emotional performance appears in the scene where the female lead is injured during the ambush by business rivals. In that moment, the shift from controlled strength to raw fear and anguish is impactful and demonstrates what he is capable of.

When compared to his similar role in Story of Running Palace, certain scenes feel familiar rather than fully transformed. Though his performance remains solid and generally effective, it does not reach the breakthrough level achieved by the female lead.

Cinematography, Setting, and Musical Score
Filming in an actual rural village gives the series a level of authenticity that enhances the story’s tone. The setting, though modest and remote, is captured beautifully. The cinematography strikes a balance between realism and aesthetic appeal.

The musical scoring also deserves acknowledgment. The soundtrack heightens emotional peaks and accentuates tension, romance, and key turning points without overwhelming the viewer. Certain scenes achieve their full impact because of the thoughtful pairing of visuals and music.

The action sequences are sharply choreographed—immersive, tight, and genuinely breath-holding at times. They contribute significantly to the pace and emotional intensity of the narrative.

Final Assessment
Pursuit of Jade is a standout series that excels in narrative structure, acting, character chemistry, atmosphere, and technical execution. The cast and production team deliver a work that resonates deeply with viewers. It is no surprise that friends who initially dismissed the idea of watching a Chinese drama were drawn in after hearing about this series—and are now slowly exploring more titles.

This is a production the entire team can be proud of. A series that not only entertains but leaves a lasting impression—emotionally rich, visually compelling, and led by a female protagonist whose breakthrough performance elevates the entire story.

Character Dynamics are written well

Personally the story had too many politics for me but I stayed to watch the character dynamics and like the general plot of what would happen to our main characters. I feel like the last ten episodes weren't as interesting as the first 20 but that's cause I personally prefer when shows focus more on the characters rather than politics.

Anyways I love how much tension the writers wrote between the main characters especially when they were having misunderstandings. It wasn't frustrating but more so exciting. I just loved how the relationships and friendships played out.

Shocked the chemistry

I’ve always found Chinese dramas—especially the historical ones—a bit difficult to get into, so I usually just stick to K-dramas. In fact, Hidden Love was the only C-drama I’d ever finished! But then, I saw a viral clip of a scraping treatment (Gua Sha) scene from a this drama. The chemistry felt so unique that I decided to give it a try, thinking I’d drop it after an episode or two if it didn’t click.
To my surprise, I ended up binge-watching 26 episodes straight, skipping sleep and meals! Now, I’m desperately waiting for the next episode. I’m officially a C-drama convert and can’t wait to see what else is out there!

Best Chinese Drama so far in 2026

Pursuit of Jade is a kind of drama that captivates you from the beginning. I will write the parts of my liking and disliking.

Story/Script: Great script. There are many stories that put characters in just for the sake of it, but this show puts each of them on purpose. Every character has some kind of activity and part in the script. The way FL TXW's character is written without any cliches requires a mention. The transition from a butcher girl to a female general is commendable. Also, the ML character arc is something we don't usually see in Chinese dramas. The QianQian and QiMin storyline is also nicely written. The climax is satisfactory.

Acting—Very good performances from the ML and FL. In my opinion the FL overshadowed everyone, and it is her story in the first 12-13 episodes. Her transition and character arc were very beautifully portrayed by TXW. I have watched her in this drama only, and she nailed it. Fight scenes were also good. The ML did his job quite well as Marquis of Waan and a matrilocal husband. Showed his range of emotions and depth. The character QiMin was also very good. Toxic, abusive, and obsessive—all traits were meticulously portrayed. Side characters also did their job pretty well.

Overall in my opinion, it's a very good drama that will be remembered by me. Barring a few usual tropes, this was a fun, interesting watch. A solid 8.5/10 from me.
