Social media did the heavy lifting for this drama
I have to admit, the edits going around online last month were enough to pull me back into asian dramas after a three-year break. But after trying to watch it, I dropped it somewhere around episode 5.The acting felt hollow and that alone was enough to reframe every TikTok edit I'd fallen for. All those cute, romantic, sexy with ''insane top-tier chemistry'' moments? Just scenes written/filmed specifically to go viral, rather than to serve an actual story or character.
Then there's the ML — supposedly a feared, iron-blooded general with a blood feud and a faked death on his record…and yet somehow the most threatening thing about him was his cheekbones.
And from what I heard it doesn't get better for his dignity. The FL ends up out there handling business while he's busy looking flawless in slow motion — and the Chinese military even officially commented on his makeup. That's all I'll say. 💀
So 2.5/10 — 2 points for the cinematography and a small 0.5 for dragging me back into asian dramas after three years sober. 💀

Shocked the chemistry
I’ve always found Chinese dramas—especially the historical ones—a bit difficult to get into, so I usually just stick to K-dramas. In fact, Hidden Love was the only C-drama I’d ever finished! But then, I saw a viral clip of a scraping treatment (Gua Sha) scene from a this drama. The chemistry felt so unique that I decided to give it a try, thinking I’d drop it after an episode or two if it didn’t click. To my surprise, I ended up binge-watching 26 episodes straight, skipping sleep and meals! Now, I’m desperately waiting for the next episode. I’m officially a C-drama convert and can’t wait to see what else is out there!

Pursuit of Jade with a perfect blend of romance & politics
If a series could be completely fine whether you removed the politics and kept just the romance or vice versa, then that series is Pursuit of Jade. The series portrays a perfect balance of romance and politics, creating a 40-episode journey of love, trust, and purpose. I could write a lot about it, but I can’t write this review without mentioning the chemistry. The tension was so beautifully portrayed — the way each scene was filmed somehow elevated their natural chemistry even further. The actors were phenomenal.
My other favourite part of the series is how our FL had some of the most beautifully shot and executed fight scenes. And I love that we didn’t even need our ML on the war field to create the same impact. Every scene the ML appeared in radiated power. I don’t know how they managed it, but even in the way he breathed, you could feel his presence. One of my favourite scenes is when he outright declined the emperor’s decree with the confident conviction of a man who knew he was untouchable.
I also love all the side characters — each of them added great value to the story. I enjoyed all the couples, but my personal favourite is Qi Min and Yu. Their love was toxic in the most compelling way, giving off anti-hero and Stockholm syndrome vibes. He was completely ruthless, and she, even though she may have hated him to her core, still seemed to crave him in a way she couldn’t escape. It was incredibly intense.
Pursuit of Jade is going straight into my all-time favourites list.

I get the hype!
Pursuit of Jade is by no means a perfect show. There are loopholes and nonsensical shortcuts. The ending is rushed, as is often the case in C-dramas. I would have liked for the pacing of the overarching plot to be more even.
That being said, it’s a viral show I really don’t regret watching. Overall it’s quick and fun. The plot moves quickly and doesn’t waste time on too many filler moments.
The main leads have great chemistry and are beautiful to look at separately as well as together. The main draws of the show are Zhang Linghe and the romance, and both deliver. I don’t think I’ve ever watched another C-Drama and commented as many times upon ZLH’s sheer handsomeness.
- I loved that Changyu had her own arc, including a very mundane one in the early part of the show (getting to keep her house, setting up her small business!). She is a Mary Sue-esque character, but for the most part, she remains lovable throughout the show. I liked how grounded, practical, and also warm and cheerful they made her.
- Likewise, I loved that Xie Zheng is portrayed as kind, caring, reliable, and supportive. He is always finding ways to help FCY and not stifle her. He never seems to be threatened by her, and I enjoyed how he learnt to let his defences down and depend upon her.
- The other characters are fun. I especially liked the relationship and banter between Xie Zheng and Gongsun Yin.
Plot arcs and pacing
- I really liked the first arc in Lin’an town. It establishes the characters, the broader intrigue, and it makes you care about the romance and about the nice, laidback village life (in spite of the gossip and social hierarchy. It’s something to look back to with nostalgia during the show. Like Fan Changyu, it makes you long for home and for the old Yan Zheng.
- I enjoyed the middle part when Changyu discovers Xie Zheng’s identity. This is where there is the sweetest hurt/comfort, and where both characters are the most emotionally honest with each other.
- The last 10 episodes were the weakest for me. It would have been better if there had been an extra 5 episodes to develop the backstory of the older generation better, so we don’t get an exposition dump at the end.
Other points:
- I liked that the drama addressed issues like social class differences (especially at the beginning between Yan Zheng and Changyu).
- I loved the soundtrack, and the use of instruments like the suona.
- The costumes have been praised. I totally agree that they looked great.
- I thought the drama was a nice showcase of different aspects of Chinese culture. For instance, the Spring Festival episode was heartfelt and so well-shot.
- I thought the drama’s attitude to sex was frank and refreshing.
- The parallels between the healthy, egalitarian relationship of FCY/XZ vs the toxic, twisted one between Qi Min/Yu Qianqian was interesting.
Overall, a 红 drama which deserves the hype!

A story that transcends between status and lineage
April 22, 2026I am so in love with this cdrama. I really love the characters, the plot, the prognosis. It got me hooked and captivated for all of it. I feel like there was so much nuance that has been happening and it really made the whole journey fantastic.
I also like how strong bolded the female lead is, she may not be the smartest, but she sure as heck knows how to stand her ground and defend herself. I feel like even playing into their power dynamics, they are a pretty level headed and a stable couple. And the way, they both really do things for the sake of their own people and community is just goals.
Not gonna lie, there are some subplots that could have been expanded to be honest since they felt a bit lacking. Regardless, I am sure that the production did the best they can do given that this is an adaptation from the novel.

Best Chinese Drama so far in 2026
Pursuit of Jade is a kind of drama that captivates you from the beginning. I will write the parts of my liking and disliking.Story/Script: Great script. There are many stories that put characters in just for the sake of it, but this show puts each of them on purpose. Every character has some kind of activity and part in the script. The way FL TXW's character is written without any cliches requires a mention. The transition from a butcher girl to a female general is commendable. Also, the ML character arc is something we don't usually see in Chinese dramas. The QianQian and QiMin storyline is also nicely written. The climax is satisfactory.
Acting—Very good performances from the ML and FL. In my opinion the FL overshadowed everyone, and it is her story in the first 12-13 episodes. Her transition and character arc were very beautifully portrayed by TXW. I have watched her in this drama only, and she nailed it. Fight scenes were also good. The ML did his job quite well as Marquis of Waan and a matrilocal husband. Showed his range of emotions and depth. The character QiMin was also very good. Toxic, abusive, and obsessive—all traits were meticulously portrayed. Side characters also did their job pretty well.
Overall in my opinion, it's a very good drama that will be remembered by me. Barring a few usual tropes, this was a fun, interesting watch. A solid 8.5/10 from me.

Excellent political period drama
This is an excellent political period drama. The actors are well known and the complete cast together are fun to watch.Of course there is a love storyline as in most C-dramas. I found a few episodes in the middle of the series difficult to watch as there was "sadistic" violence against women and children. Even without these troubling episodes, this series would have still been excellent and probably one of the best period drama of 2026.

Early impressions - Exceptional
Very rich and smooth storytelling up to episode 5. Barely any wasted scene time. It has been a long time since I've watched a C-drama without feeling the need to fast forward some scenes. Looking forward to the rest of the series.Cinematography and cast/acting works great, music is good too. Strong character development.

Female Lead - Fan Changyu is working my last nerve!
I really like the drama and I'm all for women being strong. But Fan Changyu takes the cake for being so stubborn and ungrateful! Her husband (Xie Zheng) gives her everything but his left arm and she still manages to show no appreciation, a lack of loyalty and is downright dismissive towards him. I really don't like when they make the female leads so unlikable! Overall, I gave the show 9 rating because of Zhang Linghe and the other cast members. Please stop making female leads so insufferable. Was this review helpful to you?
