A World I Didn't Want to Leave Behind
Some dramas tell a beautiful story. Others impress through visuals or star performances. Very few manage to combine writing, directing, acting, music, emotional impact, visual beauty, and psychological depth into a truly exceptional work. For me, Pursuit of Jade belongs firmly in that rare category. What stands out immediately is the extraordinary level of care devoted to every detail. Nothing feels accidental. Every character, from the central protagonists to the smallest supporting roles, serves a meaningful purpose within the narrative. Every relationship contributes to the larger story, and every decision carries believable consequences.
Beyond its narrative achievements, Pursuit of Jade succeeds in accomplishing something increasingly rare in contemporary storytelling: it creates a world the viewer genuinely wishes to inhabit. The visual beauty of the production is not merely decorative. Through its cinematography, costumes, landscapes, music, and atmosphere, the drama offers a form of emotional escape that many modern productions neglect. While realism remains valuable, art also serves another purpose: it allows us to step outside the limitations of everyday life and experience beauty, hope, courage, and meaning through different eyes. Pursuit of Jade understands this deeply. It does not simply depict a world; it invites the audience to live within it for a time.
At the heart of the drama is Xie Zheng, the Marquis of Wu'an, portrayed brilliantly by Zhang Linghe. Introduced as a seemingly fragile and restrained scholar, he gradually reveals himself to be one of the most layered and compelling characters in recent Chinese historical drama. He is simultaneously strategist, warrior, survivor, and victim of his own pursuit of justice. Torn between love and revenge, duty and personal happiness, he embodies the tragic complexity that defines the series.
Zhang Linghe delivers what may be one of the finest performances of his career. His greatest strength lies not in grand speeches but in subtle expression. Through silence, restraint, and nuanced emotional control, he communicates grief, loyalty, determination, and heartbreak with remarkable authenticity.
One aspect that deserves special recognition is the courage and vision of the casting team and director in entrusting Zhang Linghe with a character as demanding as Xie Zheng. This role requires far more than screen presence or charisma. It demands the ability to portray the psychological weight of war, grief, responsibility, sacrifice, vengeance, love, and moral conflict.
For that reason, his achievement becomes even more remarkable. At an age when many actors are still discovering their artistic identity, Zhang Linghe delivers a performance that convincingly embodies experiences most people never face in an entire lifetime. Whether this accomplishment stems purely from his own dedication and talent or was further shaped by the guidance of an exceptional director and creative team, the result remains extraordinary.
The individuals who recognized his potential and entrusted him with such a challenging role deserve sincere congratulations. In my view, the outcome is not only one of the strongest performances within the drama itself but also the most significant artistic achievement of his career so far. While I cannot claim to have seen every project in his filmography, it is difficult to imagine another role that showcases his emotional intelligence, discipline, restraint, and expressive depth more effectively.
Alongside him, Tian Xiwei gives Fan Changyu extraordinary depth. Initially introduced as a strong-willed butcher, she evolves into a symbol of resilience, courage, and emotional strength. The relationship between Fan Changyu and Xie Zheng is one of the drama's greatest achievements. Rather than relying on idealized romance, it develops through trust, sacrifice, conflict, and personal growth.
The supporting relationships are equally compelling. The storyline involving Qi Min and Yu Qianqian adds warmth and tenderness, while the dynamic between Princess Royal Qi Shu and the strategist Gongsun Yin introduces intellectual and emotional sophistication. Their interactions demonstrate that love can emerge between people united not only by affection but also by mutual respect and understanding.
Politically, the drama excels. The struggle involving the Emperor, Prime Minister Wei Yan, rival factions, and hidden heirs is far more than palace intrigue. It becomes a powerful exploration of power, corruption, loyalty, and the devastating human cost of political ambition.
The historical backdrop is handled with impressive maturity. Warfare is not glorified but portrayed as a source of trauma, sacrifice, and irreversible loss. The series succeeds in blending historical inspiration with modern emotional accessibility.
Another strength is its balance of drama and humor. The comedic moments never undermine the seriousness of the narrative. Instead, they provide relief, enrich the characters, and make the emotional highs and lows even more effective.
The musical score deserves special praise. Rather than simply accompanying the story, it elevates it. The soundtrack enhances both the romantic and tragic elements, creating unforgettable emotional resonance.
Most importantly, Pursuit of Jade demonstrates an exceptional understanding of human psychology. Nearly every major character carries emotional wounds. Themes of revenge, grief, duty, survival, loyalty, sacrifice, and resilience are explored with remarkable depth and sensitivity.
The result is a drama that functions simultaneously as a historical epic, political thriller, romance, and character study.
Pursuit of Jade is more than a successful television series. It is proof that serialized storytelling can achieve the emotional and artistic power of great cinema when exceptional writing, directing, acting, music, cinematography, and production design come together in harmony. It stands as one of the most emotionally powerful and narratively sophisticated Chinese historical dramas of recent years.
Beyond his appearance or popularity, what ultimately remains with the audience is the impression of an actor who succeeded in creating a fully realized human being—someone shaped by suffering, loyalty, contradictions, vulnerability, and hope. That is the kind of performance that endures long after the final episode ends.
As a Romanian viewer, I rarely write long reviews. Pursuit of Jade made me do so because it stayed with me long after the final episode.
English is not my first language, but I wanted to share how deeply this drama affected me.

Excellent story plus strong chemistry
The best C-drama of 2026, without a shadow of a doubt, has set an exceptionally high bar for everything else released this year. It's truly a masterpiece that has captivated audiences and critics alike, earning its place as an instant classic in the bustling world of Chinese television dramas. What truly elevates this particular series above its contemporaries is its exquisitely balanced and masterfully woven narrative tapestry, which seamlessly blends elements of romance, humor, family dynamics, and the enduring power of friendship. This intricate fusion of genres doesn't just work; it flourishes, creating a viewing experience that is both deeply engaging and profoundly resonant. The romantic storyline, in particular, is handled with a delicate touch, portraying a love that feels both passionate and refreshingly genuine, avoiding the common pitfalls of melodrama or forced tropes. It's a journey of two souls finding each other, navigating obstacles, and growing together, making their connection feel utterly believable and heartwarming. Complementing this romantic core is a generous dose of humor, expertly sprinkled throughout the episodes. This isn't just slapstick comedy; it's witty dialogue, cleverly conceived situations, and charming character quirks that elicit genuine laughter, providing much-needed levity and enhancing the overall enjoyment. The exploration of family relationships, from heartwarming bonds to complex challenges, adds another rich layer to the drama. It delves into the nuances of filial piety, rivalry, and the unconditional love that often underpins familial ties, offering relatable scenarios that many viewers can connect with on a personal level. Furthermore, the portrayal of friendship is nothing short of superb, showcasing the loyalty, support, and camaraderie that define true companions, proving that these bonds are just as vital and impactful as any romantic connection.
At the heart of this phenomenal success are the lead actors, Linghe and Xiwei, who deliver performances that are nothing short of phenomenal. They were undeniably at their absolute best in this series, embodying their characters with such depth, nuance, and conviction that they almost ceased to be actors and instead became the very people they were portraying. Their chemistry on screen is palpable, sparking with an electricity that makes every interaction, every stolen glance, and every heartfelt confession feel incredibly real and impactful. Beyond their exceptional acting prowess, their physical appearance is undeniably gorgeous, a fact that certainly doesn't hurt the drama's widespread appeal. Their striking good looks, combined with their undeniable talent, create a magnetic pull that keeps viewers utterly entranced.
It's no exaggeration to say that my newsfeed, and indeed the newsfeeds of countless others, was utterly flooded with content related to this drama. From enthusiastic fan theories and episode recaps to beautifully edited fan videos and heartfelt discussions, the series dominated online conversations, becoming a true cultural phenomenon. This pervasive presence in the digital sphere is a testament to its widespread impact and the deep connection it forged with its audience. For me, personally, this drama emerged as a cherished source of comfort and solace during what were undeniably trying times. Its ability to transport me into a world of captivating stories, endearing characters, and uplifting emotions provided a much-needed escape and a sense of warmth, proving that sometimes, a truly exceptional piece of entertainment can be a powerful balm for the soul.

The best of the best!
If this is your first Chinese drama, I pity you. It's because your standards will be very hard to reach, Anyways, my rating is purely based on my own standards. In this way, I can confidently say that the story is really great. The first half of the drama is really rewatchable the latter however should have been done better. I adore their life in Lin'an maybe that's the reason why I don't want to watch the political side at the end. The acting was superb! I already watched almost all of ZLH's dramas, I am proud to say that he really showcased his micro-expressions well here. And gosh! He is so handsome here. Thanks to the director and the camera man. He is already handsome but the angles did him justice. TXW is such a wonderful actress and so cute! I mean, she acted so well! I haven't watch her dramas yet so I am not able to assess her. But based on what I saw, she is very good. The OSTs were so good, too!If the writer, director, cameramen, the actors and actresses can read this, I beg you all to make more dramas with the same casts!
THANK YOU! <3

The Cinematography Deserves Its Own Award
LOVED the cinematography, it definitely lived up to the hype. That said, I expected much more from the grand finale fight scene and ended up feeling a little disappointed. Perhaps my expectations were simply too high because the build-up from the very first episode was so strong. The pacing near the end also seemed rushed, especially the resolution between the uncle and nephew, which felt surprisingly easy after such a long and intense conflict. As for the romance, as much as I liked the main couple, the second couple completely stole the spotlight. They were given some of the most memorable and steamy scenes, and their chemistry was absolutely chemistry-ing at its finest. Every interaction between them had me completely invested. And YES, this drama also gave us top-tier villain face cards that absolutely deserve all the hype they've been getting online (Deng Kai and Lin Mu Ran). As for Zhang Linghe, I have to admit that out of all the dramas I've seen him in, this one captures his beauty the best. Every frame felt like a visual feast, and he looked absolutely breathtaking throughout the entire drama.

A must watch drama
Here is the thing it has been long time i was so invested in a historical drama...a lot of dramas started as very interesting but end up getting bored or couldn’t feel like following the story line but this one is worth it... I love zhang linghe and tian xiwei a lot before this drama but in this drama i fall in love with the villain deng kai...I'm not into toxic or forced relationship but in this whole drama i felt he deserves love and his ending made me cry😭and for my lovely ml & fl, what can i say else! They are so perfect... They portrayed the emotions so well...I absolutely loved their entries, so magnificent🤌The aura was too mighty to ignore..i felt giddy and goosebumps while watching the episodes..In case of the mystery it was good but not very unexpected.. Weirdly i felt sorry for almost all the villains and couldn’t hate them..The visuals was very good...The connections and bondings was so loveable. Loved how the fl goes from a butcher girl to a mighty female general amd how the ml supported her and protected her throughout the whole journey even when he was not in love. And finally it was a happy ending🥰🥰. So It's a must watch even for those who are not into historical dramas..it made me feel to time travel to that era to see all these with my own eyes🥹Was this review helpful to you?
Gorgeous production and cast, and an absolutely riveting storyline.
The actors and actresses were all visually stunning, and the cinematography of this drama is an obvious step above anything I've seen. They are gorgeous!Romance is a slow-burn but with high chemistry and intensity, and I wish there were more spicy scenes but it's good enough.
Plot and pacing is perfect. I haven't given many shows 10/10 but I really think this one takes the cake and everything tied well together. All the main AND side characters are incredibly striking and reprised their roles well.
The real MVP though, is definitely the director Zeng Qingjie and the makeup and hair team. Everyone looked SO good.

How is a jade's true value measured?
once upon a snowi found a lost soul
when i had nothing
but just a hairpin
little did i know
it changed my whole
fates entwined
light was shined
i took down the veil
and the jade revealed
this is a love story. it cannot be compared to another with a different theme. it sparked and ignited our tender hearts as we shared YZ's & FCY's joys and sorrows along their journey. and it's amazing how a simple love story can then melt our hearts and become a memorable masterpiece for us drama fans to cherish. kudos to the director and as many had described, the aesthetic shots and editing he brought to life and wonders. yes, the storywriting wasn't ideal; i was so disappointed with episode 30 it dug a hollow space in my heart for awhile. a lot of deux ex machina unfortunately toward the end of the story. the first half was good and oh yes, i absolutely love the comedy. the side characters are so wholesome and awesome; particularly the little girl, ning mei mei is the true jade for me :) this series has the complete package- i love every single bit of it; both its strengths and weakness.

I loved it
If you are looking for a historical C-drama that masterfully balances high-stakes political intrigue with a deeply grounded romance, "Pursuit of Jade" (逐玉) is a must-watch. Starring Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei, this 2026 series breathes fresh life into the "fake marriage" and "fallen noble" tropes, delivering a cinematic experience that feels both grand and intimate.A Refreshing Power Dynamic
The show’s greatest strength lies in its unconventional leads. Tian Xiwei delivers a powerhouse performance as Fan Changyu, a butcher’s daughter who is as practical as she is fierce. Unlike typical "damsels," she isn't just a love interest; she eventually wields her butcher’s knife on the battlefield, becoming a formidable force in her own right. Opposite her, Zhang Linghe shines as Xie Zheng, the Marquis of Wu’an. He portrays the transition from a broken, hidden noble to a ruthless general with incredible nuance, utilizing micro-expressions that capture his internal struggle between his quest for vengeance and his growing love for Changyu.
Cinematic Excellence
Visually, the drama is a "visual odyssey." From the serene, snowy landscapes of Lin’an to the sprawling, gritty battlefields, the cinematography is breathtaking. The production quality is evident in every frame, particularly during the action sequences which are choreographed with a visceral energy rarely seen in idol dramas. The use of traditional instruments like the Suona in the soundtrack adds a haunting, epic layer to the Marquis’s marching scenes.
Why It Works
The Chemistry: The slow-burn romance feels earned. Their "marriage of convenience" evolves naturally through shared hardships, creating a "power couple" dynamic where both characters are equally indispensable.
Narrative Pacing: While the political subplots are complex, the story remains cohesive, focusing on the pursuit of truth regarding a 17-year-old conspiracy.
Supporting Cast: The villains and side characters (especially the two Princes) are well-developed, ensuring that the stakes feel real.
"Pursuit of Jade" isn't just another costume drama; it is a beautifully written, expertly acted tale of justice and devotion. It’s a rare gem that honors its genre while boldly carving out its own identity.

A Drama You’ll Wish You Could Watch Again for the First Time
This drama is one of those rare gems that makes you wish you could erase your memory just to watch it again for the very first time. The cast was perfection — every glance, every line delivered with such emotion that it felt like they were living those moments, not acting them. The OST wrapped itself around the story like a heartbeat, amplifying every tender scene and every heartbreak until you were completely immersed.
The plot had everything: palace intrigue, betrayal, redemption, and a romance so beautifully written it felt timeless. The romance wasn’t just love; it was destiny unfolding in front of us, the kind of connection that makes your heart ache and soar at the same time.
By the end, I was left with that bittersweet feeling — grateful for the journey, but longing to relive it all over again. The Pursuit of Jade isn’t just a drama, it’s an experience, and one that will stay with me for a long time.

A good watch
I don't want to say much, as there are many reviews already. I wanted to also give it a 10/10 to increase the rating. I think it was one of the best period/historical cdrama I ever watched, if not the best. Second best would be The Prisoner of beauty, the Double (although not so much romance there) and Love in the Clouds (although this is fantasy).Enjoy the watch!
