Opposite of petty, a romance that really fills the soul
Female lead is amazingly cute! super adorable little actions, plus goes a little crosseyed when staring at ML as if he's all she can see.It is a modern setting with murder mystery plots. I really enjoyed the parallels between the vr gaming plots and irl plots. Tiffs in relationship were realistic given the plot and characters, and the resolution of tiffs is super mature and handling of relationship issues is very grown up.
Well rounded and would have no shame in insisting that everyone and their mother watches this show.

Wishing it would never end
This story had you from the first ep to the last. I enjoyed all the side characters, and I am truly sad to see this one end. The ML and FL matched well together and obliviously there is drama but not enough to make your eyes roll. I will be watching this again and I would recommend anyone to watch this. Enjoy :DWas this review helpful to you?

10/10 FOR ME INDEED
if you are looking for something feel-good, to gush over, swoonworthy, and more to feed your hopeless romantic self? i suggest you watch this 🥹 i love how well executed the series is which made me understand their dynamics better 💛💛just two strangers— who got intense tension from the virtual world to the real word. just them both trying to help each other while unconsciously slowly getting to know each other to staying by each other's side from their ups and to their lows 🥺💛 i also love the story of the besties, i wish i had learned more about them but from the start they already have THAT chemistry.
i also love how they started and ended the series with rongcheng. they never forgot about the virtual game where everything started 🥹😫

THE STORY LINE !!!!
you won’t believe how beautifully they have woven the game aspect to the real life aspect. And the seamless transition from strangers to lovers, makes you all giddy!!! A must watch. I got hooked onto a drama after so so long, I finished it in in 2 sitting! The FL’s acting was genuinely so convincing and I loved how even though the story demanded an age gap, the writers didn’t make her look like an immature child, with unnecessary cringe acting. I loved the fact that the FL had a spine and didn’t get portrayed as some damsel in distress. Additionally, loved the Female second lead’s life trajectory! All in all a must watch imo!

It's been a long time since I finally watched a modern drama again
It's been a long time since I finally watched a modern drama again, as I'm usually consumed with historical and xianxia dramas. The drama clicked with me immediately when I tried watching episode 1. All of FL's struggles were similar yet different from mine, making her struggles feel like they hit me too.I even wished there was a place like that where I could role-play as someone else for real, just for a little while.
With each episode that followed, I realized that my behavior, from always isolating myself to reading novels, comics, and watching all sorts of dramas, series, films, and anime with unrealistic genres, actually showed my desire to escape reality.
I really enjoyed this drama. The cinematography was excellent, the various angles were meticulous, the pacing was smooth and fast, and the plot was engaging, blending reality and games in a way that felt truly refreshing. I even finished this drama in two days without realizing it.

I fell in love with the MLs hair!
This show was an absolute dream to watch.Apart from a little bumpy toward the end, which I’ll get to.
But first, all the gorgeous bits!
The virtual world aspect was so unusual and so well done, it drew me into the show instantly. I wish we’d spent more time in Rongcheng, because seeing Xiao Zhi Yu in his captain uniform was a treat for my eyes!
The leading pair were so good, neither were toxic nor problematic in any way. I loved the FL’s caring nature and her virtual world outfits! The ML had such a quiet, calming voice, every scene with him made you focus on every word.
The romance in this one was romancing. All the heart flutters for every little kiss or touch of hands. ML gave the best hugs, too!
There was a small love rival from Mr. Pei, the evilllll step-bro, but it came to nothing, and though that all was resolved by the end, I did wish he could have found someone to love him, because Pei wasn’t all evil, just under the influence of his dickbag of a father. Plus, I had a little crush on the way he pushed his glasses up his nose!
Now, I come to the not-so-good parts – mainly, the parents!
They absolutely ruined certain bits for me.
I was irritated by them all.
In my Asian drama watching history, I’ve come across some super annoying parent roles, some I’ve wanted to throw off a tall building (I’m looking at you, mother from ‘Something in the Rain’) and while Love Between Lines parents weren’t so totally ugly or overbearing, each had their way of irking my eyeballs.
The evil step dad who was fond of slapping his son or throwing hot tea at his face because he couldn’t get his own way. I felt so bad for Pei, and just wanted him to tell the dad to f*ck off and go and live his own life instead of under his iron thumb.
Then we had the weak-spined mother, who constantly had a look of nervousness no matter the scene. Like, babes, you didn’t know the man you married (I suspect for security) was the man who killed your son’s father?! Saving grace for evil step dad, he never displayed any anger or violence toward her.
Then we have FL’s parents – the busybody mom and the woe-is-me dad who played on his disability far too much. You walk with a cane, mate, you weren’t paralyzed from the neck down, stop pouting and whining!
I hate when the kids have to pay for the sins of the parents.
Around episode 24 was when the plot fell apart and we had to go through the eyerolling breakup, through no fault of the couple. It was a heartbreaking moment when the female lead, on her knees, confessed to her father that she had attempted to move on from the male lead.
Thankfully, we get our HEA, but had it not been for that plot swerve, this definitely would have been a 10/10 show for me.
It has great vibes and secondary cast (loved the two best friends to our couple) and a show I will watch again.
Now, I need to look up the lead couples other shows!
PS. It’s worth mentioning how incredible the OST is. Each song fit the scene perfectly and never overpowered it.

Male lead — green jungle, female lead — also green forest
There's a plot, there's romance, and an interesting detail in the form of a game.It was so interesting how the FL tried to outplay the ML in this virtual Mafia game. After working for three years at a job she hated just to help with her father's medical bills, seeing her finally return to the field she loves and land a spot at her favorite company was incredible.
It’s totally understandable why the ML hid his past; I’d have done the same. The way he never picked fights with the FL and tried to handle everything like a mature adult was amazing. Him trusting her with a trauma that haunted him for about 20(?) years was so sweet. And the fact that she accepted him despite the secrets because she loves him—that’s my Roman Empire.
Her team at the architecture firm are such cuties! You can understand her parents' side too—when your friend is murdered and you "know" who did it, of course, you wouldn't want your daughter dating the killer’s son.
HIS OLDER BROTHER 🫦🫦🫦 He’s a villain at first, for sure, but once you learn his backstory, you just feel so sorry for him.
Her friend’s subplot was sooo great, but her husband turned into a total jerk by the end. I’m so gutted she didn't end up with the ML’s friend instead (he’s such a sweetheart, I love him 😔🙏).

slow start but exciting after that
The "escape room"concept at the beginning was interesting but maybe weird for some viewers -if it had gone on longer I would have abandoned because it's a bit irrelevant but the real story kicks in after about the third episodes. After that, it becomes really interesting and the plot develops really well. Final few episodes was quite excitingI don't usually like modern cdrama because of the weak plot and sometimes just too long but this one has a good story, good acting, good directing and the ost is good. Only problem with the some platforms is they turned up the music so loudly it actually deafened the conversation and the lyrics subtitles totally blocked out the dialogue subtitles (super annoying-please can someone tell them)

Not perfect, but very, very enjoyable and wonderfully acted drama.
First off: The performances by the two leads, Lu Yu Xiao and Chen Xing Xu were both fantastic. Both really went deep into being their respective characters and their chemistry as a romantic couple was off the charts. I'd like to especially call out Lu Yu Xiao's performance. I had already been extremely impressed by her fantastic performance of a girl on the spectrum in Blossoms In Adversity and then as a more conventional 'strong action heroine' in Love in the Clouds. But this performance was next level. Very different from either of those two roles. She put all kinds of interesting mannerisms into her character and was consistent so that those things weren't dropped along the way. Hu Xiu has a cute almost cartoonish way of walking that is so endearing and her way of expressing emotions through her hands. In lesser dramas these little things often get dropped a few episodes into the story but these (and other nuances) were part of her character's uniqueness and she kept them all the way through. Smiling, laughing, angry or crying - the character of Hu Xiu was unique and real. And very endearing. As the classic strong-silent-type Male Lead, Chen Xing Xu has a more conventional role and is, to be fair, overshadowed by Lu Yu Xiao's performance, but he still does a fantastic job. He does not over-act and also is very consistent in how he presents the character. His breaks from strength to vulnerable are believable and don't look forced. And as mentioned, he has great chemistry with LYX. The two really worked great together.Other cast members were all solid. Especially Li Ting Ting as bestie Zhao Rou, whose voice has a quality that just owns scenes when she speaks. Her character's story by itself could have been a main lead story. And while I hated the contrived, annoying and mostly useless existence of the Pei Zhen character, I have to give credit to Dai Xu for his performance, especially given the crappy writing involving his character.
The music, sets, wardrobe, cinemetography are all mostly top-notch production. The 'Scripted Murder Game' settings especially were often beautifully done. The one real low point in production quality was late in the series with the warehouse fire scene. That was just very poorly executed and so many aspects of that episode just did not make sense. Poorly written, poorly directed and cheaply implemented.
Aside with that one drop in production quality, my only real complaints are with regard to a couple of specifics with the script / plot. 90% of the time the script is fine and even fantastic. I especially like the dialog given to both Hu Xiu and Zhao Rou. As the top female characters they got consistently intelligent dialog that showcased the intelligence and emotional insight of the two characters. Way better than the dialog given to many other female leads in so many dramas. And for the most part they avoided plot-induced stupidity with either of these two characters so I really appreciated that. Where the script really stumbles is in the contrived character of Pei Zhen as the ML's step-brother. This character is almost completely meaningless to the plot and serves mainly as nothing more than a time-wasting annoyance. He's not even a half-brother to the ML so their sibling relationship is extremely tenuous and what little there is was marked mostly by abuse against the ML. Otherwise it is clear from the plot that ML mostly grew up completely separate of Pei. Yet the plot tries to imply that there should be a bond between them underneath all the misunderstandings. There isn't. Pei is simply an abused son who himself commits his own crimes and is, frankly not a sympathetic character other than for the abuse he does take from his father. The plot tries to make him seem sympathetic, but does not go anywhere near the real steps that need to be taken by him to become sympathetic: He needed to turn himself in, go to prison for his crimes and get counseling for his deep psychological problems - which persist all the way to his last scene. His 'unrequited love' for the FL is just mostly pathetic and childish. I mean, seriously? He's obsessing and fondling that old bandaid at the end? That is just so sad and pathetic. Not one step towards real character growth. Saying "I'm sorry" at the end is not meaningful. Especially when at the same time he still is looking longingly with his stupid sad puppy-dog expression like a 14-year old boy looking at the unattainable popular girl. He's emotionally still a child even at the very end. His character needs years of therapy.
The script for Pei Zhen's dialog tended to be the worst, most comic-book silly of all the characters. Especially in the scenes when he and the ML, Xiao Zhi Yu, would be pumping testosterone at each other. I'll give credit to Dai Xu for delivering well with what he had to work with. But really, this show could have been done better without the Pei Zhen character existing at all.
