Fun, lighthearted, dumb

Overall I enjoyed this drama, it’s a fun watch if you want a very lighthearted and cute story. They lost a the plot a bit at the end lol, but it’s okay. The ML had a good character arch, as well as the SML and SFL the only one that was just as annoying and stubborn throughout th whole drama was the FL, she was my least favorite character tbh specially with the relationship she had with her brother and bff, she treated them so bad for what? They are grown adults and she kept invalidating their feelings. But well it was fun and had a good laugh watching this.

Overly fluffy, slapstic rom-com that ends up as a mature marriage

I persevered until the end of the Potato Lab and the end of ep 11 and ep 12 were a total U-turn and had some REALLY DEEP MEANINGFUL CONVERSATIONS AND RELATIONSHIP between ML and FL. It was done ah so perfectly. They matched!!!!!! At the end, it was GENUINELY AND HONESTLY a perfect marriage between two people deeply committed in love.

Look up the scene where they are stuck in the freezer and she tells him how to handle her. And the scene where they got into his bed and she can't proceed and he helps her, or the scene where he opens the door to her brother kicking him out.

ML and FLwere just two hopeless immature losers and the kdrama didnt change them overnight.... we saw the process of self reflection and trying harder.... and they just started communicating honestly, and it was totally totally magical.

Due to their efforts, suddenly a lifelong pair of lovebirds emerged, a perfect couple.

and yeah the episodes before that were ... cheesy. So hollywoody meaningless shocking cheesy

About first half of the episodes made me think this was just a fluffy slapstick rom-com for youngsters full of hormones. The ML and FL are in their 30s but they behave like middle school at best. Initially, ML and FL are REALLY immature, wounded, confused, they do not know how they feel or what they want. They are on automatic pilot, totally oblivious to their inner workings and confused when they feel something that they think they shouldn't. They cannot communicate. So the first half was so boring to watch...... The acting wasnt great either and the story was often ... well... shallow.
Also, the second pair, the friend and brother, imo were cheesy and boring. I felt like I was watching some cheap Hollywood movie. Yeah I am sorry to say that. I do not watch Hollywood movies and I watch 99% kdramas. So when I first started watching this one, the only thing I could think of was that Netflix was KILLING the kdrama concept and value. I kept watching bc I had to destress from some heavy dark ugly legal stuff and the overall vibe of this kdrama is positive and upbeat, there are really nice small-town relationships, nice nature, and the characters were actively trying to accomplish something and were overall happy and upbeat healthy people, so I was benefiting from that and kept watching.

It was a pleasant surprise that the last several episodes made it very meaningful because ML and FL started communicating and ended up as a pair of true lovebirds, a real marriage, a real love relationship of understanding, communcation and cooperation. THEY GREW UP enough to pull it off. and showed a very nice yin-yang blend of feminine and masculine attributes. I was impressed.

The pairing was a hot angry loud drunkard loser who suffered a lot from others, and a robotic greedy cold corporate dude. I didnt quite appreciate their acting. His was more real than hers. Both are good looking and the drama had a positive upbeat vibe, so bad acting wasnt detrimental LOL I remember her bc she is so pretty and vivid, animated. He is pretty too but his role was so flat and grumpy, too simple, so imo he did not shine as much as he could have. He is a good actor, how he acted admitting her he harmed her, etc is very memorable acting, so real. Sp show him off more. He doesnt have to be a shallow handsome cold person in a suit for most of the drama...

The drama started with very simple and rather crude humor and slapstick ... we have two people pulled in by hormones and trying to hide it....... and then the plot is about them trying to fight it, outwit each other, harm each other, etc. THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PLOT.

and then ... it totally changed... when he started showing his deeper side and she spoke up. I think the turning point is when he helps her to handle the rain blowing the greenhouse covers.

Then the real turning point was when she came out and admitted how she felt.... the scene in the freezer where she TEACHES HIM how to handle her and what she wants, where she EXPLAINS to him how she feels and what she needs. She taught him emotional intelligence and TOLD HIM how to treat her. AND HE RESPONDED and did treat her properly, even better than she asked for. HE UNDERSTOOD HER. He spoke back to her and it was clear he understood. Bc she explained herself to him. To his credit, he followed up on it.

So they became a perfect pair, their shortcomings suddenly were perfect matching pieces. His RATIONAL COLD LOGICAL approach suddenly was 100% appropriate because it enabled her to say all the emotions and then he could respond rationally and calm her down and then two of them together would "go" places, like the scene in his bed.

So that level of maturity was impressive. Also, from the point of the story, it was totally impressive how they matched. His cold rational skills became a stable foundation of his total dedication to her, where he rationally, with care and protection, was able to speak to her, to relate to her, and to treat her with utmost TLC, giving her exactly what she needed and helping her to feel safe and loved.
And she, as overly emotional and coarsely rude, showed her finest emotional ability to EXPLAIN in words to him what is going on and how he should react to it in the best way to her, and led them to a land of a real relationship. He accepted it, that is his contribution. THEY WERE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE, in words and in action and in energy.

The scene in the frezer and the scene in his bed are STELLAR 100% wonderful relationship communication.

I think the most comical scene is when they re-hooked up and he comes out in the black robe and rationally answers questions to the guy evicting him. Or how he related to her when she came to his bed.

So everything that looked fluffy and over-the-top exaggerated and shallow, gradually built to become a piece in a very nice looking overall picture. The two of them MATCHED with their personality and traits and ways of doing things, and were there for each other. THEY COMMUNICATED CLEARLY. And it was fun to see their own particular flavor of communication.

So this drama ends on a note that is deeply satisfying, a very warm, solid, reliable relationship, a marriage, human and humane note, and a lifelong love in a very positive, solid, reliable, sophisticated, mature way. By the end of the kdrama, ML and FL demonstrated HOW you can achieve it. Both were closed and scared human beings, ................. and EVENTUALLY bc of their love, both understood the deeper requirements of human condition and relationships, and both took steps to make it happen. They had arguments and fallouts and always cleared it out and came back together ON THEIR OWN. THis kdrama is not about them meeting by chance somewhere or friends rehooking them. EVerything good that happened in their relationship, happened bc ML and FL were mature enough to think it through , self observe, self correct, and step forward towards the other to fix the mess they caused. IT was very inspiring and positive.

The two of them end on the note of a very solid marriage. I dont think he was happy to be a landlord though, so I can see him getting a more corporate job soon :)

THe underlying story is about accepting ourselves and living our life as we are, creating good karma, and about having loving clear productive family and personal relationships.

So that message that it is possible to pull it off if you try, properly :) and clearly, and bravely, was the message that was so powerful and so warm and educational. I started watching this bc there was nothing else to watch and it was boring at first but by the end, I felt good about watching it. IT LEFT A WARM FEELING IN MY HEART. It showed what is possible if you try properly.

Scientist girl vs. CEO himbo + magpie attacks = horny potato chaos with zero nutritional value. 7/10

7.5/10: A Rom-Com Rooted in Chaos and Charm
🥔 THE GOOD:

- Lee Sun-bin’s fiery portrayal of Kim Mi-kyung – A passionate potato researcher whose temper is as explosive as her love for tubers.

-Kang Tae-oh’s So Baek-ho – A corporate stoic turned reluctant farmhand, whose journey from boardroom to potato field is both hilarious and endearing.

-Physical comedy – From magpie attacks to drunken escapades, the slapstick elements are executed with impeccable timing.

-Scenic cinematography – The rural setting provides a picturesque backdrop that enhances the storytelling.

⚠️ THE "ALMOST, BUT..." MOMENTS:

-Predictable plotlines – While charming, the series doesn't stray far from typical K-drama tropes.

-Underutilized supporting characters – Some side stories feel underdeveloped, leaving viewers wanting more depth.

💋 STANDOUT SCENES:

-The magpie assault – A bird attack orchestrated by Mi-kyung adds a layer of absurdity that's hard to forget.

-Drunken confessions – A tipsy Baek-ho reveals a softer side, leading to unexpected romantic tension.

🎯 VERDICT:

"The Potato Lab" delivers a hearty mix of humor and heart, rooted in classic rom-com soil. While it doesn't revolutionize the genre, its charm lies in its execution and the chemistry between leads.

Watch if: You're craving a lighthearted escape with endearing characters and rural charm.

Skip if: You're seeking groundbreaking narratives or complex character arcs.

Best paired with: A cozy blanket, some comfort food, and a willingness to embrace the whimsical.

I liked The Potato Lab, but it wasn't exactly what I expected.

When it was first announced, the idea sounded like a lot of fun — a drama centered around a potato research lab? I'd never heard of anything like that, so I imagined it would be a quirky rom-com.

In reality, it leans much more toward comedy than romance. While it features some genuinely romantic and charming moments, it definitely has a stronger comedic edge than I anticipated.

Lee Sun-bin shines as Kim Mi-kyung, the chaotic yet lovable force who essentially drives the series. Her energy keeps the story moving and makes even the most absurd scenes feel natural.

Kang Tae-oh portrays So Baek-ho, a rigid and overly serious character who tries to control everything — and everyone — around him. I'm a big fan of Kang Tae-oh, but in this case, I felt his character lacked deeper development.

I would have loved to see more backstory: how So Baek-ho became friends with Park Gi-se, and how and why he ended up as the director of Wonhan Sales' Strategic Planning Department. Those details could have added more depth to both the story and its characters.

Overall, The Potato Lab is a lighthearted and entertaining series — just don't go in expecting a full-blown romantic comedy.

Entertaining, But Missing Something

The Potato Lab has a fun and creative story that kept me interested. The acting is strong, and the cast really brings their characters to life. I enjoyed how the show mixes humor with more emotional moments.

However, the music was disappointing — it didn’t match the tone of the drama and felt forgettable. The rewatch value is also low since it’s not something I’d watch again after knowing the main twists.

Overall, it’s a 7/10 show — entertaining and unique, but it could have been better with stronger music and more lasting impact.

Potatoes and rom com, not a bad combination after all

Things I adored

1 The crew of the Potato Lab and their relationship. Probably many disliked how nosy they were but I grew up in a close family and know that when you love someone you appear to be nosy because you care. I'm all for privacy but I learned early on to never judge and rather appreciate any kindness and meddling that comes from the heart.

2 The friendship between the FL and the 2FL. I think this is how a genuine and true friendship looks. I loved how honest they were with each other and how they cared for each other. They were funny which is always a plus.

Things I loved

1 The FL. She was feisty yes, but the actress did a good work to convey emotions and she was great in the sad and the funny parts. I see many don't like her but I've only seen a funny, intelligent hardworking person who did everything she could to move forward with her life and chose to see the good side on everything.

2 The romance between the main leads. It was a great enemies to lovers rom com and they nailed it for most parts. Yes. there were some things they could have handled better, but at the end of the day their relationship was a real romcom. I didn't see any of them like a doormat. It's always funny t me that some think the ML was in the wrong whilst others the FL. No one was a bad person. Their relationship was believable and cute and funny.

3 The brother of the FL. He was a good brother and the only thing I didn't like was that his sister could use violence sometimes. I don't find violence funny an any form so that always bothers me. I didn't care for hos relationship either, I'd prefer they didn't go down that road but I just skipped some scenes when it was about his relationship with the 2FL.

4 I lived the wife of the ex of the ML. She came across as a real person and an honest one regarding her faults and feelings. I loved her friendship with the ML. I wish she could find happiness.

5 The ML. I loved the actor although sometimes I was baffled of how attractive I found him whilst others not at all. So weird. In any case he did a despicable thing regarding the FL, but for him it was just work and I totally understand why the FL accepted to be with him. He was honest, he did what he could to redeem himself by giving up his job, and he tried hard to become a better person. What else can we ask from someone? I thought the actor did a good job with the romance part and the funny beats. They were a good couple with the FL. There was chemistry between them, and their kisses were for once good.

6 The 2 FL. I thought the actress was cute, talented and she had a great sense of humor. I loved how she portrayed her role, she was a great friend, and I just wish the romance was with someone else.

Things I liked

1 That it was about potatoes. A different and interesting background.

Things I disliked

1 The ex. I don't put him in the "Things I hated" list because for once I think he paid for his stupid decisions and that he regretted genuinely his behavior. I didn't like the actor at all, he was looking close to 50 than 38 and I can't truly believe a young woman like his wife would fall for him. I just thought he was unappealing.

like brewing love – just as boring

from the very beginning, the concept of this drama didn't interest me, but after seeing the chemistry between the main characters on tik tok, I decided to watch it anyway. it was a mistake.

the story itself is about potatoes, but there was very little of it, revealing the essence of the work in the laboratory was not enough for the plot. this drama is 50% romance, 10% about experiments (potatoes) and 40% drama about some misunderstandings, secrets from the past, which was very infuriating.

yes, the chemistry between the main characters was there, but most of the time I didn't understand why everything happened to them like that - quickly and without explanation. I gave up on the last episodes, although it would have been logical to watch it to the end, but I value my time and nerves, so here is my final opinion

A mashed up mess of a script. Could not decide what it wanted to be.

Review

7/10 is my rating. If you can overlook the slapstick humor in the first half you might like it. To me this is one where the first half and second half are significantly different. I liked it but didn't love it. Would recommend it for die hard romance fans. It is a bit different. I might watch it if someone had it on but will not ever likely seek it out to watch again. Their chemistry was just okay. Awkward I thought at times.

Spoilers

It had too disorganized of a script for me. I know it was because they tried to make it so comedic, but in ways that didn't make sense, it disrupted the flow of the story.

I thought most of the characters were weird. To me something like potato research is serious business but they trivialized it and poked fun a lot. I like series where I learn something about an industry or whatever and this danced all around the actual research. It was frustrating.

Seriously I don't know many people that would continue to like someone that took part in completely destroying you once and then actively firing you a second time. Him firing her made no sense as he should have been able to tell she was the glue that held the whole thing together. He finally realized that when it was too late.

Him quitting his job made zero sense. Maybe shifting what you did but with everything he invested in that work, quitting was totally out of the character they had built.

Her bestie was weird bordering on creepy. And I just felt sorry for the brother. She was abusive to him. It went beyond sibling harassment to bullying. He was afraid of her.

The yelling lab

Hard working hot headed female lead meets cold as Ice male lead this could have given us lots and lots of bickering fun but all I got was aworn out mute button and a feeling of why?

The most interesting character in this is the rich ex wife. the rest have some moments here and there but all the good is overshadowed by the over the top supposedly comedy that had me roling my eyes so many times I should be thankful I can still use them.

Why did I keep watching it, honestly I am not sure.... probably the sweet and the cold between the yelling and this hope of getting to watch something better. Also I do love potatoes so I had to support the cause.

Sweet Potato

The Potato Lab is about potatoes . . . Sort of. It is about the art of growing potatoes. Before you start hiding under the bed to keep from reading the rest of the review, think about it. With something as silly as producing a whole drama on potatoes, you got to be able to make this a funny RomCom. I am laughing a lot. Some laughter is totally “laugh out loud” humor. The Potato Lab probably won’t win any prestigious drama awards. Nonetheless, sometimes you just need to power down and just view a drama which is just simple likable entertainment. Seriously, I was going to pass on this one. The premise sounded too silly. That would have been a mistake. I am belly laughing. The dialogue, the words we have to read, is so great. The Potato Lab is a sleeper hit for me. I should have just trusted actor Kang Tae Oh (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) to pick a great first project, after his return from the Military. The Potato Lab is a go for me.

Written by Kim Ho Soo, who also wrote Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung. These words are so excellent. This story is to die for.

Quote: “He has a beautiful exterior, but a “behind hole” interior. It is like a cruel joke.”

The Potato Lab stars Kang Tae Oh (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) and Lee Sun Bin (Work Later, Drink Now)

The Spring Romcom We Needed

Initial Review on 3/30/25. (Will post concluding thoughts after finale):

I came into this show with low expectations. The reviews have been unfavorable here on MDL. To be honest, I started it expecting to drop it.

What I’ve found instead is an absolutely charming romcom. It’s a gem so far! I can’t understand its 7.9 rating right now. In my opinion… The humor is spot on, the chemistry with the leads is spot on, the storyline is spot on. “The Potato Lab” manages to dance around romcom tropes while bringing enough newness to the table that I’m fully engaged. The cast is lovable and quirky, and I’m looking forward to each episode. So far, it hasn’t dragged in this first half. I am hoping to see this quality continue moving forward in the second half.

Fingers crossed.

Final Thoughts (4/9/25);

IGNORE THE HATERS ON THIS ONE. It’s a gem. It is a romcom that quite simply romcoms. It was a great watch. I had an absolute blast. From stellar acting from our leads to almost crying literally tears to going back to laughing my head off like the beginning of the show—the second half serves up a solid solid show.

The character development of our leads was especially impressive to me. They are flawed but both of them learned to work on themselves in order to be together. Even when things fall apart, they handle it within about one episode, and I was honestly shocked by how well it was handled. It reminded me of what we were given earlier this year in “Love Scout”—heck yes for communication.

Give this a watch. It was so so fun and romantic too.

Stupid....couldn't watch it to the end

This might be enjoyable for some, but for me it was just too full of over-acting, nonsense behavior, and adults behaving like juveniles. It would have been more realistic if a bunch of middle school and high school-aged kids handled all the roles. Wait.....they might be too mature. The FL's character borders on psychotic and disturbing while showing us every emotion under the sun from anger to laziness to deviousness in a 24 hour period, 7 days a week. But.....this is somehow appealing to the ML???? Yea......right. I barely made it through 8 episodes. Usually this is where I will begin to speed watch my way through to the end. But, I dislike these characters so much, I'm dropping it without seeing the end, because I really don't care what happens to them.
