Leap Day Episode 3 Reactions
There is a lot to say, but first, lemme get to my predictions.
I have been so wrong this far. I mean some things I have been right, but majority have been incorrect like my time loop theory (lol I am basically stealing the plot from Groundhog Day) and my "everything is going to be like leap day" theory. I am not complaining because I love forming new theories as the show reveals more twists. Thankfully, one of my theories still holds up which is my "evil professor & his day/night equivalent renewing the curse" theory.
Plot wise, this is the most twisted episode so far! I did not expect the flashback to 2008. During the past two episodes, I was thinking that it was weird that Day's sister died in a shooting as I didn't think it is like the curse to involve strangers into its usual ordeal. However, I thought like "maybe I am being too suspicious, maybe the curse liked to change it up". But no! I was right! Well, maybe. The 2008 incident has to have something important hidden as this is the first time that their family members' deaths collide with each other. Plus, this is the only time where strangers are involved which is the shooter and the other 18 victims. I will get more into this later as this and the scene with the professor leads into my future predictions. Still talking about twists, I didn't expect Ozone being on fire was a dream, but I am glad it was as I don't want my best boy to be burnt as a crisp. The kiss between Night & Dream was also surprising and I didn't know how to feel about it at first since I thought it was not good timing, but as the scene continue, it was very sweet. But not as sweet as all of Ozone & Day's scenes. The scenes, development, and acting in all of their scenes really took the cake as it fills up my heart. One of my favorite things in this episode is the interaction with the whole gang. I am taken back on how fast the characters are moving as I didn't expect Night telling Dream the whole truth (with no interruptions) and Dream believing him quickly. I also did not expect Dream to remember about the professor and put the puzzle together. By the way, I saw some people complaining that Night should have accepted help from Day. I wish he would work with Day (probably later when things get worse), but it makes sense that he didn't since he is very scared of messing with the curse because he saw what it can do due to Joy's sudden death with no external force or freak accident happening, Unlike Night, Day never saw any of his family members died right in front of his eyes and all of his family members died in freak accidents, so he still has hope and fire inside of him to stop the curse. All in all, I am loving the fast development of the plot and this episode have a great mixture of twists & fluff.
Moving on to cinematography, the scene with Day's sister & Night's uncle laying side-by-side with their phones ringing is so chilling! The reveal with the uncle being there was done really well. I was expecting for the uncle or one of the family members of Night being there based on the comment about the mall's mass shooting last episode and the opening of this episode, but I didn't know how would the scene looked like nor did I thought the uncle was right behind the sister. Hopefully, we will go back to 2008 and see the full shot as it seemed weird to me that the sister would run in the same direction as the uncle after she saw him being shot. There was 1 thing that I think could have improved was the reveal of Ozone being in the hospital bed. Why was the camera turning so slow when it didn't need to be? Like, why are we building up tension? I knew Ozone would look okay because Pond's facial expression didn't change much when he saw Ozone and we saw a peak of what Ozone look like in the teaser & thumbnail, so the build-up tension was unneeded. I also don't like the ending since they didn't properly introduce the scene before building up tension, but I know it is more of a stylistic choice. As for the acting, Pond & Gun took my breath away especially with the scene of Pond reliving the memory from 2008. Pahn's acting has been consistently good for the 3 episodes, so I am not going to say much about it besides there is potential to be better, but I think we will see more of that potential later on when we get heavier scenes from her. Dew's acting is a bit off, specifically with the angry scenes and the confession scene. I feel like he is holding back emotions which makes the portrayal a bit stiff. I know that his character is emotionally repressed, so I don't expect him to be all hysterical. However, I do expect to see some sort of expression (whether in the eyes, nose, mouth, forehead) of him holding his emotions back, but I don't see anything like that, so it looks like he lacks emotions needed rather than repressing it. Thankfully, he does great during his happy scenes. I am not going to take off a lot of points for him since his character rarely interacts with people, so he probably have a hard time expressing emotions.
I am going to be a bit nitpicky here while talking about the editing and the directing. The fire scene is supposed to be serious, but I laugh a little due to the fire not looking realistic (I don't know what fire looks like in real life, but it looks fake) lol, but I will let it slide since it was a dream and dreams tend to be a bit goofy with visuals. Also, the budget for digital effects is limited, so I get it. As for the directing, I had a few problems with it during the medical scenes. I don't know how Thai's medical system works, so this could be realistic, but I found it odd that they didn't tried to save the mother and were just like "welp she's dead". Also, the scene where the doctors gave the most vague explanation of Ozone & Dream's conditions like they didn't go into any detail. I will let all of this slide since it is not a medical show and I just like complaining lol.
Going back to the 2008 flashback, I definitely think the professor or the long-haired guy in the intro (played by Pon) is the shooter. I really think someone is fueling the curse. Thinking about the conversation between the professor & Night, I do think he does have a wife & daughter, but the question is "Are they still alive?" I think his daughter or both of them are still alive and he is protecting them by transferring the curse to Day & Night and the transfer needs a sacrifice by killing people or something else. I don't know if the mass shooting happened during the day or night, but it seems that the curse was not supposed to happen during that year (don't know why, but maybe Day & Night met before and they don't remember (assuming that Day & Night meeting is a good thing)) and the shooter wants to resume the curse by taking action onto their own hands. This explains the phones ringing all of a sudden due to the sacrifice already being made and the curse taking action. I also think 2008 is the birth of his daughter (maybe the death of his wife too) or a near death accident of his daughter. I don't know if the baby is someone else (like his own baby) or Day (probably Day). At this point, I am being paranoid lol. Looking at the teaser for the next episode, it looks like someone is spying on Ozone & Dream (assuming they are Ozone & Dream as I can't quite see their faces) and the curse is being reactivated again (assuming that the nosebleed scene isn't another dream (most likely not)). Also, the long-haired guy might make an appearance next episode since the drawing looks like him. I don't know if I wrote this before in my last review, but I don't know if the "stars" in Ozone's head is helping them or harming them (maybe helping since they call the long-haired guy "trouble" in the teaser). I also don't know if that are the stars talking, the curse talking, or someone else talking.
Favorite Scene: Day decorating Ozone's bed and Ozone waking up (so sweeeet!!!)
Favorite Character: Tie between Day & Ozone (fabulous job on pairing Pond & Gun together)
My rating is a 9 out of 10. I took a point off due to Dew's stiff acting and few cinematography choices I don't like. Other than that, everything was great and Pond & Gun really carried. As for Night & Dream's relationship, I thought their relationship was going too fast, but I remembered that it has been 4 years of development for them and only forty minutes for us, but they could have shown the development a bit better, especially with the confession scene. However, I didn't took any points off because the kiss was good and all of the stuff that happened afterwards makes up for it, so it cancels out. Since more episodes are being released, I am being a bit more harsher unlike during the first two episodes when I didn't have a grasp on the characters yet.
Can't wait for the next episode!
P.S. I love detective Day!
P.S.S. I love that they show the socioeconomic differences between Day & Night with Dream getting her own room and Ozone being in a communal space.
