Leap Day Episode 4 Reactions
🎵dun dun DUN 🎵
A very LONG post like always.
First off, lets go into my theories from the past episode. This is the first episode where all of my theories lined up, so yipee! To summarize, I believe the professor and stalker are curse partners like older versions of Day & Night. They have found a way to stop the cure which is to transfer it to someone else by making a sacrifice. This goes to my theory that one of them is the killer of 2008 because I found it strange that the curse would involve strangers into its ordeal. What if Day & Night have met before in 2008, which stopped the curse, but the duo found out about it and activated it again with the mass shooting? This is assuming that both of them are evil (not saying that both of them will stay evil at the end of the series). Also, my prediction that the mysterious guy will appear in this episode is correct along with my prediction that he is stalking Dream & Ozone, so yay (even though it was easy to predict since it was very briefly shown in the teaser). I will talk more about my baby theory later since we know more information about that incident in this episode.
Lets talk about the plot. I really love the pacing since it unravels important details bit by bit in a timely manner. I heard that some people are not big fans of the pacing. I think it is because they are watching the show live and the weekly wait (along with the two week hiatus during Thai's New Year) makes the pacing feel slower. I think if those people watch the episodes in one sitting, the pacing would feel better. Plus, the first episode has a lot of action scenes, so they probably expect most episodes to be like that. However, there needs to be background & character's relationships development before the climax. Speaking of development, I am loving Dream & Ozone blossoming friendship, especially the scene when Dream is introducing herself to him. She really has a way of opening people up. Plus, I am thriving to see more of the four of them together. There are also more humor in this episode like the scene when Dream tells Win that she is in love with the professor LOL that took me aback and is the funniest scene yet. As for the scariest scene, it is definitely the razor scene (it sends me chills imaging a razor in the mouth). Besides that, there is some suspense with the introduction of the stalker guy, the baby rumor, and the hint of the curse returning. It is a great buildup to the climax coming up soon as more things are being revealed and the gang getting closer.
As for the acting, I don't have much to say since there were not a lot of high-stake/heartwarming scenes, mainly humor or investigation scenes, so not a lot of acting skills can be shown in those types of scenes. I love Pond and Gun's acting as always, especially the heart touching scene of Ozone talking to the social workers. I love the emotions that Day showed when the staff suspected domestic violence and when he had to leave Ozone to the workers. All of their scenes touched my heart. As for Dream & Night, I like their scenes and acting more than the last episode. Their scenes really amused me, especially the entire library scene with Night being all sweet to Dream in front of Win. I didn't think Night was stiff in this episode since, in my opinion, he is always good with light-hearted scenes and I thought he was good when he showed care to Day & Dream. As for the angry scenes with Day, I think it was also good and not stiff (I can see why people think that though), but it aligns with the character's personality since it is anger mixed with tiredness of Day's persistence. I don't have much to say about the camera work besides I want more camera angles. For example, the cemetery scene when Day found out Night was there too should have a shot of Night's realization that Day was there, but we only see Day's reaction. For the directing, I found it weird how episode 3 ended with the three shots of Day, Ozone, and Night, specifically with the part of Night looking somewhere with a concerned look on his face. You would think episode 4 would start off exactly where episode 3 ended since the last scene looks like a cliffhanger, but no it started off with a flashback and another different scene. Maybe they did film a scene that was important, but they decided to scratch it. Last thing is that part of me didn't want them to hide the face of the mysterious guy since we never seen his face before (besides in the opening sequence) and they revealed his face at the end, but it wasn't a big reveal or anything. So, hiding the face was a bit pointless, but I am not going to take any points off since I get it was to build suspense and mystery by having the eyes hidden for a bit (eyes are the widows to the soul and it is hard to know the soul if the eyes are hidden).
One thing that I want to say before we get to the theories is that I noticed some people talking about Ozone's inconsistent personality and his autism back in episode 3. I have said this before in my past reviews that I don't take or add points for the autistic portrayal because I don't know much about autism and it is a thriller show, so I am not expecting much realistic elements. Thriller/fantasy shows typically shouldn't be the place to look for realistic elements since they will use anything to drive the plot like the Percy Jackson universe used dyslexia as a sign that a person is a demigod or some horror movies using schizophrenia as a way to see spirits. As for the personality changes up to episode 3 since all of the comments came from that episode, it is a bit too early to tell if Ozone's personality drastically changed because episode 2 was mainly flashbacks from years ago and episode 1 was just an introduction. Plus, it was Leap Day in the first episode, so Ozone would be more tense & serious because he knows that the curse would come for him. When Leap Day passes, he began to calm now and be relaxed, thinking he is safe for the next four years. If people were talking about within episode 3, I don't personally see any personality changes, so it really depends on how a person views the characters.
As for the theories, lets talk about the razor again. Some people think the stalker guy put it in the bowl, but I think it is the curse because it looks like Day immediately give food to Ozone once he finished cooking and it is hard for him to know which bowl Day will give to Ozone. Some people think it is in the meat. I am not sure since when Ozone spat out the food, there were no meat pieces in his hand. It is easy for the blade to fall out of the noodles and to be felt with the chopsticks, so my only theory is black magic lol or it was in the meat and it was a filming error that there were no meat pieces. Anyways, it is most likely the curse, but a weakened version of it. As I said before, I think the professor & the mystery guy (assuming both of them are evil) are transferring the curse to Day & Night by making sacrifices. I also think Day & Night met before in 2008, but the older duo manage to activate the curse again before Leap Day ended. In 2020, they probably didn't manage to activate the curse on time when Day & Night met, so the curse is weak now, but is still accepting sacrifices. Right now, it is only strong enough to harm one person, which is Ozone since he can talk to the stars. As we get more episodes, more sacrifices will be made and the curse will get powerful, affecting Dream too. I am wondering if Day & Night have to meet only at Leap Day to properly stop the curse because they met on the 28th in the first episode and yet, the curse managed to get Dream & Ozone into an accident, so probably later on, Day & Night's meeting will not stop the curse like before and they have to stay together (like the stars said) to finally put an end to this. Also, I am sure that at least one of the older duo is evil. Maybe one of them (the mysterious guy) will probably have a change of heart later on.
About the baby, I think it is Day because in the first trailer, it says that Day was born right at noon. Plus, I was rewatching the second trailer again and I noticed that Day's mother & the mother in the scene looked identical and I saw the professor. Then again, it could be that they reused the same scene because they ran out of scenes like with the clip aunt & uncle dying in 2016 being reused in the trailer for 2012. I am just wondering why the baby is Day and not Night, but maybe the show want to showcase the professor's realization clearly. Like, earlier in the day, the professor heard of a mother dying at midnight, so he probably think the curse is looking for new people to suffer and he was right when the mother he was operating on died right at noon, which is why his voice sound sad & tired. Hopefully, we will know more about the rumor because what piece of evidence did they had to accuse the professor like did he used a dirty instrument or did a sacrificial ritual before hand lol Personally, I don't think he kill the mother because he wouldn't asked for the time and would just checked it himself to avoid suspicion. Plus, the reason of wanting to go home early is sus because they also said that he never took a day off (he probably created that reason), so why that day he want to go home?
I have heard of a few people thinking that Win is the baby. Maybe. I don't know where to put him in my theories lol. He could be important later on like he starts helping the professor because the professor promised him something and later he will go to the good side once he realizes how evil the professor is. Or he will stay as the annoying, lovable side character. Plus, I noticed in the cast list that Earn is going to have a support role, but we haven't see her yet. Maybe she is the baby or the professor's daughter. (Side Note: I actually think Win is cute lol love that he is direct with his feelings, but he should learned to read the room a bit, then again I think Dream should have been direct in her rejection (unless she already did before))
I have noticed that every episode (besides the first one) have started off with a flashback. I didn't expect to see the flashback from 2004. This makes me think if that 2004 incident important (probably not) or they are just trying to stick to the pattern. I think the next episode will have another flashback from 2004, but with Night's father. I noticed in the trailer of a scene with a boy hugging a man on his deathbed and it looks like Night. Or we will get a flashback from 2000 with their mothers since we are going backwards and they haven't properly used the shot with the mother dripping blood and her feet off the table (maybe those are just aesthetic shots).
Talking about the last scene of the episode, I don't know why the mysterious guy was looking left & right when he was going to his apartment (bit paranoid). I have noticed a bunch of moving boxes, piles of organized papers, and minimalistic furniture, looking like he just moved in. Maybe the curse still affects him and he is a good guy (doubt it since I trust the stars now), causing him to have paranoia and moved a lot. If that is the case, then he is probably not in contact with the professor and I don't know how he got his information of where they are.
As for the teaser for the next episode, it looks like Night is going to get hit by a car because in the trailer, it has a clip of him on the ground bleeding (assuming those clips aligned). It also looks like he is snooping around the professor's office or the mysterious guy's apartment (probably the office, but the box is similar to the moving box in the mysterious guy's place). About Ozone's drawings (looks great btw), I noticed the words "booz" and "hooz" on them (assuming I read that right (since the h looks like a 4 upside down & the z looks like an N) and assuming they mean something).
To finish this long post, I have a really far fetched theory of how the curse started. If this curse is man-made, what if long time ago, there was a father who was expecting twins, but the chances of them surviving birth is low, so he tried to find something to make them live. In his search, he found an old book which contains the curse or he made a deal with an old spirit. It worked and the twins were born on Leap Day, but the father didn't know the cost which is that the curse will take all of the twins' loved ones. As the twins get older, the curse wants new victims, so it keeps picking people born on Leap Day. At this point, I am being crazy LOL I also think the stars are helping Ozone because they haven't harm Ozone yet and they don't like being used for evil. Like, in order for the curse to work, the stars must align in a certain way, which is so happen to only be on Leap Day. I have no idea if they are going to go this far lol
Favorite Scene: Ozone talking to the social workers about Day scene (so touching) & the entire cemetery scene (it showcases the conflicting opinions of Day & Night, the budding friendship between Dream & Ozone, and the introduction of a new strange character)
Favorite Character: Day & Ozone (I should probably get rid of this segment for now since I don't think my favorite characters will ever change lol)
I gave the episode a 9.5 because of minor things I don't like (mainly the camera work) and of how strong the light-heartiness & buildup of this episode (loving it). Looking forward to the next episode! <3
P.S. I am finding it amusing that the exact same car commercial keep showing up at part 2 of every episode (besides the first one).
