Impression of Youth — Proof That Taiwan Understands Emotional Storytelling
There is a reason Taiwanese BL continues to be my favorite. While every country has its own strengths, Taiwan consistently produces stories that feel more mature, more grounded, and more interested in the characters than in simply selling a romance. Whether it's We Best Love, Plus & Minus, Kiseki: Dear to Me, Unknown, or The On1y One, there's a level of emotional sophistication that I rarely find elsewhere. Impression of Youth is another reminder of why I keep coming back to Taiwanese productions. On the surface, the story is simple. There are no elaborate conspiracies, supernatural twists, or exaggerated villains. Instead, it follows two people whose lives slowly become intertwined as they confront feelings they never expected to have. But what makes the series special is that it understands love isn't always the biggest obstacle. Sometimes the biggest obstacle is ourselves.
Age differences. Past relationships. Personal regrets. Fear of starting over. Fear of being judged. Fear of hurting someone you care about.
Those are the conflicts that drive the story, and they're handled with surprising maturity.
What I appreciated most is that the series never tries to create unnecessary drama. Nobody suddenly becomes evil. Nobody spends half the series plotting against the couple. The emotional tension comes from believable insecurities rather than artificial plot twists. That gives the romance a quiet authenticity that feels much closer to real life than many BL dramas.
The acting fits that style perfectly.
Neither lead tries to overact. Their emotions are subtle, often communicated through silence, hesitation, or a simple glance. Taiwanese BL has become exceptionally good at trusting its actors instead of relying on exaggerated dialogue, and Impression of Youth follows that tradition beautifully. Their chemistry isn't explosive or overly passionate—it feels safe, comforting, and deeply human. Sometimes that's far more romantic than endless kisses or dramatic confessions.
Visually, the series is exactly what I expect from Taiwan. The cinematography has a warm, natural quality that makes everyday moments feel intimate. Cafés, apartments, quiet streets... everything feels lived in rather than artificially designed for television. It creates the impression that you're watching real people instead of fictional characters, and that realism makes the emotional moments even more effective.
Another thing I really admire is how naturally the drama treats sexuality. The fact that the characters are gay is never presented as the central conflict. Their problems aren't rooted in their orientation but in their emotional baggage and personal circumstances. That's something Taiwanese BL has been doing particularly well in recent years. It normalizes same-sex relationships by allowing the stories to focus on universal human emotions instead of making sexuality the only defining characteristic of the characters.
The soundtrack doesn't particularly stand out, but it understands its role. It supports the atmosphere without trying to manipulate your emotions, allowing the performances to remain at the center of the story.
If I have one small criticism, it's that the pacing occasionally becomes a little too restrained. Because the drama deliberately avoids major conflicts, there are moments where the story risks becoming almost too quiet. I personally didn't mind that, but I can understand why viewers expecting a more conventional romance might find it slower than anticipated.
Final Thought
Impression of Youth isn't a drama that tries to impress you with shocking twists or grand romantic gestures. Instead, it quietly tells a story about two people learning to accept themselves before they can fully accept each other. That's exactly why it works. Taiwan continues to prove that BL doesn't need to be loud to be powerful. Sometimes the strongest love stories are simply the most honest ones, and Impression of Youth is a beautiful example of that.

Nothing new!!
Everything about this series is mediocre. From story to acting and character development everything is half baked. Nothing new or special about this plot.Just a timepass series that too if you are okay with seeing NC scenes with a high school student & professor.
Only good thing is Luhui, he got that cute and innocent face. And OST was good other than that i don't see anything to mention it here.

Disappointed
The show started out already boring. It picked up a little as the story progressed, so I continued. However, story got nowhere. The actors can't act. Muji Hsu (the guy that played the art teacher) his acting hasn't improved. I watched him in the bl series, "Because of You." He is still the same. Emotionless, stiffed. His character is boring, shows no excitement. The art student his character is so childish to me. Maybe that's because his character is supposed to only still be a high school student? But still, imature.
They have no chemistry at all. Zero!
Their storyline was boring!
The art teacher showed no interest in the mc(art student) but suddenly just accepted the mc's confession.
Their was no relationship build up between them. During the confession and they kissed, as a viewer, I didn't feel any special feelings for them.
The second couple had a better chemistry, but still very lacking too.

Who Made This?
Honestly who had their first impression of youth to look like this? Cause this is all over the place, this isn't how youth is and honestly I'm not even gonna waste too much time on this review so I'll make it simple, Xu Lu Hui is immature for his age, acts like a 10 year old when he's probably pushing 18 or something, the plot is weak asf and lacks entertainment, its just very plain and rushed at times, very boring explanations of things we don't care about and unnecessary things. The second couple is more likable, they lowkey carried the show, but sadly that wasn't strong enough to keep me watching 30 min of constant drama, and childish behavior. It just wasn't good at all, don't recommend. 6.5/10Was this review helpful to you?

Immaturity of Youth
This series was aptly named as it displayed in full splendor why one should not dabble in the kiddies pool as an adult. It was truly disheartening to see the recent fare from Taiwan diminishing in quality and and creativity. This being the first offering seems to have fallen flat. The characters one dimensional, the story line uninspiring and acting by all less than stellar. This would have best been offered as a school production than an actual series by professionals.Taiwan stories have always bordered on the taboo. In this regard they have not failed. A teacher being allowed by all to enter a relationship with a direct student. One cannot control to whom they are attracted, one can control their response to the attraction. Yu Xing's response to Lu Hui's admission was disturbing. Disturbing as he disregarded his responsibility as an adult, as his teacher and also as his fellow cohabitant. This was not between a professor and a college student, but between a young teacher who was in college and a willful teenager. How could this be appropriate on any level? He willingly accepted his feelings and embarked on the relationship with the child. I use child here to differentiate their status in age and not behaviors as both have acted immaturely throughout. Yu Xing's female friend had been at his side and the propeller in his life to encourage him to reach academic fulfillment. His immaturity in handling the situation would see her hurt. Had he been upfront, she would not have had to scold him and still advise him on his own life. Lu Hui's childishness would create situations that should never have been. How could he not see that holding the teacher's hand in class was inappropriate? How could he not see that his response to Yu Xing's dreams would hurt him? How could he continue his infantile behavior of ignoring Yu Xing and it be entertained for as long as it did? All of this completely distorted what could have been a beautiful story of love and restraint by both parties. Both of them falling in love was not the error, acting on it before Lu Hui left school while still being a teenager in his care, was. Had both shown restraint and measures used to wait, may have been a story worth watching.
Lu Xi and Bing Chen were no different in courting controversy. Upon first sight, Lu Xi began to have feelings for Bing Chen. Which is fine, as they are both consenting adults. What is controversial, Bing Chen was portrayed as a widower still deep in grief. After receiving a drunken kiss, the grief considerably dissipated and plunged head first into what can be assumed to be his first gay relationship. The reactions of both of them seemed rushed and unrealistic.
After viewing Unknown and The On1y One, this falls way below the expected mark and a poor representation in storytelling. The ending was expected and completed at the steady slow steam that was carried through out. This does not have any re-watch value as it was very bland.

TAKE NOTES FROM ONLY BOO (had to change my whole review)
This was nice until ep 4, but then ep 5 arrived & destroyed everything. Ep 5 was so rushed, I know they had only 10 days to spend together. But what's the hurry? They just proposed to each other & literally ate each other that night. No buildup, makers forgot what real romance is. Where are communication, future plans, giving gifts, spending quality time? There wasn't any need to include sex scene at all, it felt forced, they barely knew each other. Had potential but ended up disappointing. Don't waste your time, guys. Was this review helpful to you?
Good story
Another BL with the same cliche storyline.I couldn't get into it because there was no
emotion..there was no gelling of the two ML and if your going to do a BL at least kiss like you mean it.. not two pair of lips pushed flat together and more than likely both couples hating it which is the impression I got. This is
because they are straight actors not gay.
Take a page out of the SKorean.. Japanese.
Thailand Boylove series. Pity because bls are supposed to be full of emotion throw on the bed kind of passion. Well that's what I look forward to. If you can't deal with passion you will lose..

Too forced
I'm sorry I've to be this harsh on the drama despite loving Taiwanese BL but this .... This is way below average.Story was fine, I mean I don't mind the whole age thing, i mean it isn't a big deal, one is in high school and the other college that's what? a few years age gab. Well, kids In high school have sex so what? If it was between two high school kids I don't think people would mind so what is a few years older.
However, my biggest complaint is that everything is very forced, I see no reason for the two leads to fall in love? Moreover the second lead, one is mourning and boom! Suddenly in love all over again.
Acting was terrible, it's not abhorrent or unwatchable per se, but it's very inconvenient, chemistry between all characters is nonexistent, even the two brothers doesn't seem like brothers, and the second lead story is extremely forced beside being unrealistic.
So there is literally nothing to look forward to while watching, not even a side story, not even two brothers funny frienemosity. Nothing!
Also, I didn't like any character, I couldn't feel any connection for them, and I didn't care about them at all, making finishing the drama a chore.
Overall skip it, even if you are - like me- a fan of Taiwanese BL, this one is just bad ~

9/10 Impression of Youth 9/10
9/10 Impression of Youth 9/10Impression of Youth is a Taiwanese Boys' Love series that ! personally enjoyed a lot.
What I like most about this series is its charming storytelling. The relationship between the characters develops naturally, growing from simple closeness into deeper feelings for one another. It is portrayed in a sweet and heartwarming way that often made me smile while watching.
The production quality is also impressive. The cinematography is beautiful, with well-composed camera work that gives the series a soft and stylish atmosphere.
Another highlight for me is how the intimate scenes are presented. They feel sensual while still maintaining an artistic touch, with strong use of lighting and color that makes several scenes visually memorable.
Overall, Impression of Youth is an engaging and enjoyable series with romance, charm, and strong chemistry between the leads. If you enjoy warm and relationship-driven stories, I would recommend giving it a try. It is available on iQlYl.
