XIAO CHANGZHEN (PRINCE DAI)
The third prince.
He fell in love with a woman from enemy's country, Li Yanyan (from Korea apparently). When the emperor attacked her country and slaughtered the royal family members, Prince Dai begged the emperor to spare Li Yanyan and he married her.
Although they don't have children, Prince Dai loves her deeply. Their marriage falls apart after she gets caught for conspiracy. Deep within, Prince Dai is tired with his complicated relationship with his wife. His love and devotion ends up in vain.
XIAO CHANGTAI (PRINCE DING)
The fourth prince.
He married the woman he loves, Ye Wantang. He showed no interest in state affairs and the throne and lives happily with his wife.
However, Xiao Changqing blows up his cover. The emperor punishes Prince Ding to guard the mausoleum. Prince Ding plans for the next move while hiding in the mausoleum.
Shen Xihe finds out about Prince Ding's plans and he runs away with his wife. His wife still chooses to be with him even after being constantly lied to. Prince Ding still hasn't give up and this time is to kill Xiao Huayong.
After watching ep 12, I feel they mixed both PRINCE DING & PRINCE DAI stories. As it Li Yanhui is Prince Dai's wife though they change her name however, her plot is similar to Li Yanyan.
Yes, they combined 3rd and 4th princes for efficiency.
They also erased Xiao Changyan (8th) and Xiao Changgeng (12th) in the drama, as well as the cousin Prince Xun/Xiao Changfeng.
Instead, they give a lot of exposure to Changyu/6th Prince (Chen Heyi).

That half sister DOES exist in the novel. She is so annoying and persistent in pursuing Changqing/Prince Xin (Xu Zhengxi). She isn't important, but later she realizes she will never get his love and he sends her far away.

In the novel she isn't important, however looking at the character chart, I noticed she is connected to the second prince.
I came up with the theory that the scriptwriter might combined her character with a dangerous girl named Yu Sanniang who later married the second prince to gain status as "princess consort". If it is, then with these 2 characters combined, she will be an even more annoying bitch! Dangerous and scheming!

It's a common practice for the marquis/general who wields influence/military power to send in a son to the capital as a 'friendly' hostage. it's like a trade off to both parties showing 'good faith' or trust (more like lack of). it's a form of control/power the king needs to have to insure his throne is not threaten.

He has a relationship with a dancer, Bian Xianyi, who is 9 years older. Xiao Changyu and Bian Xianyi are deeply in love and they are willing to sacrifice for e/o.
Although Shen Xihe and Xiao Huayong were eager to kill them, they are able to escape and live in peace as commoners.
Errrmmm i wonder if this is a mistranslation because thats kind of like evil of our leads to wanna kill him when he is like of no harm to them
!! It makes sense they combined characters because they can't make this many characters fit on a show and get enough time, I'm super curious to see how that all plays out!

Li Yanyan (Li Yanhui) is the 3rd princess consort. She was from Korea, I assume. She and the 3rd prince are deeply in love, however her hatred towards the royal family is too deep. She can't forgive the emperor who killed her family.
So eventually, she colluded with the 4th prince, Changtai, to rebel. They met a few times and Shen Xihe found out from their scent! Yes! Changtai then ran away with his wife, while Li Yanyan is imprisoned.
The third prince, Changzhen, is tired with all this bullshit. He then asked her if she ever loved him and so on. She still firm with her goals, and it broke his heart.
He went to subdue the rebellion and died 😭 Li Yanyan then regrets all her decisions and blames Shen Xihe for his death. I kinda forgot her ending, but it seems she then commits suicide.
Meanwhile the 4th princess consort commited suicide after failing to convince the 4th prince not to rebel. He regretted his act and commited suicide while hugging his wife.
She might have the same ending in the drama despite being the wife of 4th prince either way.
