It's a common practice for the marquis/general who wields influence/military power to send in a son to the capital as a 'friendly' hostage. it's like a trade off to both parties showing 'good faith' or trust (more like lack of). it's a form of control/power the king needs to have to insure his throne is not threaten.

In the novel the 6th Prince used/pulled SXH in their plot to escape the palace…which is why SXH don’t mind killing them. SXH is not to be taken advantage or or make a fool of lol

guys I'm currently reading the novel and confused about the family tree are all the current princes sons of emperor youning except cp (he is youning's brother prince qian's son who was supposed to be emperor but died )
how is he the 7th prince then he has like 6 princes ahead of his birth when prince qian died during the time they over threw old emperor. shouldn't he be older than all others

It is common for prince/princess to get married at young age, as soon as he turns 18-20 (prince) or 15 (princess). It is also common for a prince to have many concubines, therefore Emperor Youning has a lot of sons. Prince Qian's wife couldn't get pregnant as soon as she married Prince Qian. Prince Qian only has one son, Huayong, who was born during the rebellion.
Another note: sometimes several concubines might get pregnant around the same time. The 6th prince, Huayong and 8th prince are about the same age, 20 years.
Tbh the novel didn't describe in detail about their family tree, except that Prince Xin, Prince Lie and Princess Pingling are born from Consort Rong. The others have different mothers.
The novel has dozens of important characters and bcos ALL the princes, except the ML, has similar names (Xiao ChangXX), it is VERY easy to get confused. Nope. He never specifically said he wanted to be an emperor. He himself didn't know if he could find an antidote and survive. At least he wanted every threat to be eliminated and plant his own people in the cabinet. But then Shen Xihe appeared and he realized she wants to be the Empress Dowager. So he wanted to pave the way for her and their son.
Also, he already faked his death. His son already ascended the throne, how could he possibly be back and said "Hey guys, I'm still alive!" 😅 Nah he is too lazy and just wants to enjoy teasing his wife.

Even if she gets pregnant again, outsiders will know the father is the "male concubine". No one will make it a big deal, they have learned from their mistakes. Their son won't care, just like when the rumors about her circulated during Huayong's absence.
I suggest you to read the last few pages of the novel to understand.

the 6th prince is not evil, just desperate that he's willing to do anything to escape/be free with his love. however, b/c of his actions putting/dragging SXH in their plot/scheme. For that reason, SXH have thoughts of killing them...but she end up letting them go in exchange for a favor or an moral IOU.
