Summer Lemongrass

I watched this movie at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival.
After the screening, there was a guest session where the director, writer, and lead actors discussed the movie with the audience.

Overall, it's a youth romance movie, so the plot is fairly common—or I should say, very common.
However, the execution of the entire movie wasn’t bad. I liked it.

What I liked:
1. The male and female characters were portrayed as 'normal' high school students, without any over-the-top actions, childish voices, or exaggerated coolness.
2. The male and female leads spoke multiple languages—Taiwanese, English, Spanish, and French—throughout the movie. They’re polyglots, which made me envious!
3. The second male lead was also portrayed as a good character. His moment begging the vet to open the clinic to help the dog of the man the girl he loves cares about was his golden moment. He’s also talented in music.
4. The difficulty of long-distance relationships was realistically portrayed. They drifted apart slowly, breaking up without explicitly saying it.
5. In the reconciliation scene, some people might disapprove of the male lead’s actions, like saying the kiss was without consent, but I support it. His third wish came true. Sometimes, you don’t need explanations—actions can clear the grey areas.
6. The ending was cute.

What I disliked:
1. The title 'I Am the Secret in Your Heart' doesn’t seem fitting. 'Lemongrass of Our Youth' would be better. The English title doesn’t reflect the core of the story. Even by the end, the female lead didn’t know she was the male lead’s childhood friend. Or maybe the title implies that some secrets should remain secrets.
2. The movie’s focus on high school and college/work phases was roughly 2:1, which felt a bit unbalanced. Wanna see more of college-work era.

disappointing love story

I rarely have second lead syndrome, but this one hit the hardest. I went into this expecting for her to choose the best friend just for her to end up with the new classmate. I didn't really feel the chemistry and the ending was pretty weird but very predictable. Aside from that, a lot of the story has been swept under the rug for their romance - like what happened to the girl from the band after, what about the best friend, is he okay? also how was life in america for the main guy? just a lot of jumps. Overall, this movie has great quality but would not recommend watching it.

This is an okay movie, simple and i love it.

Taiwan is one of country that can made a good movie about youthful, first love and reminiscing the good time when you are the in high school.

The story is just so-so, anything special but that the things. I love how simple and ordinary movie it is especially when its comes to youthful theme.

And i love the song so much. Quite addictive lol
If you want to watched “some good feel” movie, this is for you.

Let’s reminisce the youthful that you have in your mind, along with the movie.

Well, i still recommend it though…

easy watch with weird spacing

despite majority of the story being written in WXX's point of view, this story belongs to everyone except her. cheng yih (ML) has an interesting family dynamic. even though SML is low key obsessed with the FL, his passion for music made him stand out. compared to all that, FL seems dull. i can't even blame the actress, because she was giving her all. writer should've focused less time on the love triangle time line, and more time on after the time jump period. overall, it's cute, but predicable film with happy ending

is this a love triangle

it was pretty good but it wasn’t really a love triangle if she didn’t get yuzu a chance like a love triangle where one side has no chance. her brother was mad fine tho AND the dog dying plot was not needed. also what wishes im so confused. why did the mom come home and take her son how’d she know. i can admit they’re very cute together tho but why no communication on why he was mad calling her easy was insane. she never found out abt why that guy liked her from childhood too🫩did yuzu just accept defeat

Are we serious

I’m actually livid that I wasted my time on this. The ending was incredibly rushed, cliché, and predictable. JUSTICE FOR YUZU. He was yearning exactly the way a lead should; he showed up, offered comfort, and stayed present while the ML was nowhere to be found.

I loved the ML from Mysterious Love, but he was so jarring here. He lacked any real personality compared to Yuzu, who was funny and was in a band. THE CRAZY PART, he never told her she was his childhood friend, which was the entire point. They spent so much time on the grandparents and the grandmother’s dementia, yet never used it to address the forgotten memories of the FL —what a waste of screen time. Why would you even raise this point if you weren't going to develop it.

There was zero communication. He never explained why he called her "easy,"no communication clearly and his move to America felt like a self-inflicted "crash out" rather than his mother forcing him. SHE NEVER forced him to pick between his grandparents' happiness and his. The fact that their long-distance relationship just "faded" made their entire bond feel surface-level and worthless. Then, after years of ghosting each other, he just reappears, they kiss, and everything is fine? It’s nonsensical. What kind of message is that even sending? Its not ok they were in a toxic relationship.

Overall, it wasn't sad at all, just very annoying. It would have been more emotional if they had done something similar to '20th Century Girl,' where he and the dog were both ill and died in america and she found out years later why they lost contact. Also, the dog storyline fell very flat; it wasn't even that sad that it died, to be honest.

Anyways they really pieced it together to get that ending. It's almost like they had decided the ending before the plot. This would have been way better if they changed the genre to a sad one because that's where it was heading for realistically. It did not have to be cliche they should have just faded out of their lives. He could never have shown up to that wedding, which also sends across an important message of moving on.

Yuzu was robbed 😔😔😔

I Am the Secret in Your Heart is a light, youthful school romance built around a classic love triangle, where emotions run high and logic often takes a back seat. The story opens with chaotic energy: a fight on the first day of school, chalk dust in the air… and then Cheng Yi walks in like the perfect “school prince.” For Xiao Xia, it’s instant love, and from that moment on, her mission to win his heart begins, bold, messy, and completely over the top.

The film embraces every cliché of teen romance: the impulsive girl, the idealized boy, and the childhood friend who watches from the sidelines, quietly judging and not always approving of her choices. Xiao Xia throws herself into her crush with zero hesitation, which gives the movie its comedic charm, though it sometimes sacrifices deeper emotional development.

This isn’t a story trying to reinvent anything. Instead, it delivers a sweet, nostalgic look at young love, the kind that starts with a single glance and feels like the entire world. Some conflicts resolve quickly and stay on the surface, but the film’s simplicity is also part of its appeal.

In the end, I Am the Secret in Your Heart is a light, easy watch. It won’t surprise you, but it will give you a warm, playful trip back to those teenage years when falling in love was chaotic, dramatic, and wonderfully naive.

The Secret was how did the fit such a complex and compelling story in a film length

My rating: 10/10

What elevates this movie is its natural, unforced feel. The characters are relatable ordinary teens—awkward, earnest, sometimes silly, but never cartoonish. Moon Lee's performance as Hsiao-hsia is especially endearing; she portrays a tomboyish girl in the best way: strong, caring toward those around her, unwilling to tolerate bullies, and never falling into the typical whiny stereotype. The character development is impressive, packing a complex emotional story into a relatively short runtime with depth and authenticity. The love triangle feels genuine, carried by small, everyday moments like bike rides, classroom glances, and summer vibes rather than over-the-top drama. I loved Hsiao-hsia and Yuzu's relationship—it's warm and deep in friendship—but you can clearly see why she never felt romantically about him, despite his unwavering devotion. Yuzu's heartbreak when he realizes she's deeply in love with Cheng Yih is painful to watch, yet he remains selfless, even helping find a vet for Cheng Yih's dog when Hsiao-hsia is stressed, without ever lying or badmouthing his rival. The film masterfully keeps you guessing who she'll end up with almost until the very end; but you aren't left hanging the story delivers a satisfying resolution. Visually warm and sun-drenched, with lemongrass as a subtle motif for fleeting first loves, and a nostalgic soundtrack that hits just right, the movie evokes those endless summer days of youth. It's sweet without being saccharine, emotional without manipulation, and leaves you with a soft smile and a gentle ache for your own teenage years. In a genre full of tropes, this stands out for its heartfelt authenticity and masterful suspense in terms of whom she chooses. I would watch it again and highly recommend it as a feel good coming of age romance that has a surprising depth.

Spoilers

The story builds tension brilliantly through the love triangle, with Hsiao-hsia rejecting Yuzu somewhat earlier but him still declaring he'd keep trying. Even after Cheng Yih leaves for the USA, Hsiao-hsia ends up in China alone with Yuzu, creating real uncertainty about their dynamic. The long-distance drift between Hsiao-hsia and Cheng Yih feels painfully true to life—long-distance relationships often fade—but the film shows that if feelings are strong enough, they can restart when reunited physically. Yuzu's selflessness shines through, like when he helps with the dog despite it being Cheng Yih's, highlighting his deep care for Hsiao-hsia even as his heart breaks. In the end, Hsiao-hsia chooses Cheng Yih, but the film leaves what happens with her and Yuzu somewhat open-ended. We don't get a clear resolution on their post-rejection friendship or if they fully reconcile romantically (though it's implied the romantic door closes for Yuzu). These small unclear details add realism rather than frustration, emphasizing how life and relationships evolve messily. Minor ambiguities—like whether Hsiao-hsia remembered Cheng Yih from the past, or exactly what happened with her and Yuzu during those years Cheng Yih was in the USA—don't detract; they add a realistic layer to young love's uncertainties.

A amizade deles é linda.
