Hidden Gem about Women struggles in long drama

Actually i watched this because of Wang Yinglu since i quite trust her choice of script. This drama is not like usual modern long drama focused on romance. For someone who craved for plot and character development this is my hottest recommendation since it's quite underrated. Even it's about promotion film for Guizhou city, Xiao Fang stills relies on strong plot and not being dragged for few episode. This drama got family feud, comedy, how society view of woman, and making a life choice.

The screenwriter put a lot of effort into it, especially the contrast between the eldest aunt and Xiao Fang, which depicted various types of marriages. The director and cameramen put the fresh scenery and bright cinematography for everyone who wants to relax watch light drama

Wang Yinglu acting are quite versatile for her generation and the chemistry between the lead was quite okay for me but hey in this drama i'm not into the romance part so i quite interested in this drama due the women struggles. Yeah, none of the female characters are portrayed as completely independent and clear-headed from the outset and it's was quite realistic.

Whether it's the lead or the supporting characters, their character development breaks free from traditional stereotypes. The eldest aunt, having experienced a failed marriage, still compromises when choosing a boyfriend for the second time, only realizing after repeated trials that one can live well alone. The second aunt, with more life experience, initially completely depends on her husband until she's in dire straits, fights desperately, and discovers she can live the life she wants on her own, even pulling her husband out of the mire in the process. Xiao Fang, on the other hand, is free and optimistic, yet she still experiences heartbreak and disappointment during her marriage discussions with Xiao Wei. Her growth doesn't automatically accelerate just because she always knows what she wants, but at a younger age, she has already begun to follow her heart much earlier than her older aunts. What impressed me most was Xiao Fang's family; they never harshly criticize any female character's mistakes, allowing for compromise in life. This kind of portrayal is so comforting. Even the wisest grandmother in the family never used her own experience to guide her daughters and granddaughters from different eras on what to do. She always encouraged her family to listen to their own hearts. Finally, a drama doesn't simply create a "traditional standard" strong female lead, doesn't "judge" the older generation or flawed supporting characters with contemporary independent standards, and doesn't demand that female characters meet various "perfect standards" from the very beginning! Girls' growth is allowed to have differences in speed and time. It no longer uses a uniform scale to measure the progress of girls' growth. Whether they mature early or slowly transform, every stage of growth belonging to "Xiao Fang" has its own value and deserves acceptance and affirmation. It's great! PS: Actually, another highlight of Xiao Fang's family is that they never engage in "involution" within the family, accepting everyone's differences. This core of women's stories is what truly deserves to be seen.

Criminally Ignored

It took 1 TikTok video -the only one I've seen since - for me to get curious about this drama and the first episode to know that I'd be sat for the long haul (a mere 18 episodes).

Shot in a picturesque village, it is a story that delves into themes deeply grounded in reality. We explore societal pressure, family dynamics, the beauty and struggles of womanhood and motherhood, community, perseverance, and personal growth.

I loved how the story balanced all the different elements and the emotions they constantly hit you with. One minute I'm laughing so hard that I can't breathe, and the very next scene has me on the verge of tears. Some scenes were both funny and sad, leaving me to laugh while wiping away tears - a very confusing emotional state, to be honest.

The story is also deeply cultural. From matters of bride price and child sex preferences, attitudes about out-of-wedlock pregnancies and kinship adoption, the drama opened my eyes to new topics I'd never heard of while expounding on those I had surface level infomation about.

The characters are also another stellar part of this drama; none of them is wasted. The writers beautifully gave each character depth, developing them enough to carry their individual arcs and support the show as a whole. Every member of both families is well-explored. Even the minor characters who pop in occasionally bring an emotional depth that helps the story flourish.

Personally, I would highly recommend this drama to anyone looking for something different. It is funny, heartfelt, and beautifully shot, with life lessons that will stay with you long after the final episode.

PS. While the drama is tagged as a romance, I think that's a little misleading. To me, romance wasn't the main focus. It is a family drama first. It explores various forms of love, not just the romantic kind, and shows how different characters struggle with their attachments, not just our main leads.

I just wish his story after the one-year time jump had been tweaked so we could have seen them back together one last time.

The story presents a darker reality: money is a necessity in marriage, and genuine love may be a luxury. Another fallacy: the assumption that transactional arrangements cannot succeed. When partners share values and learn to understand and respect each other as they navigate life together, even a pragmatic arrangement can end in a loving relationship.

I loved the setting and the thoughtful portrayal of rural communities being renewed and valued as repositories of a treasured way of life. Funny, messy, and surprisingly deep

I honestly didn't know exactly what to expect from Xiao Fang, but this drama turned out to be such a pleasant surprise.
At first glance, it looks like a light rural family drama with a rather chaotic premise: Yang Xiaofang becomes pregnant before marriage, the relationship with Qi Xiaowei falls apart, both families get involved, and suddenly an entire village seems to have an opinion about what she should do with her life.
And yes, there is a LOT of chaos.

Let's start with the comedy, because some scenes genuinely made me laugh.
The whole situation surrounding the two families can become absolutely ridiculous. Everyone has an opinion, everyone thinks they know what is best, everyone is trying to protect their own interests, and somehow every attempt to “solve” the problem only creates another problem.
The village basically becomes its own character.
There is gossip, matchmaking, family arguments, misunderstandings and people getting involved in situations that really aren't their business.
And somehow it works.
I especially enjoyed how the drama doesn't treat this chaos as something completely separate from the more serious themes. Xiaofang is pregnant, unmarried, and suddenly everyone thinks they are entitled to decide what she should do. The result is a lot of funny situations, but also a very interesting look at how much pressure can be placed on a woman simply because society has already decided what her life is supposed to look like.

Xiao Fang is the heart of the story and Wang Yinglu is one of the biggest reasons the drama works.
She has flaws, she makes mistakes, she gets confused and she obviously doesn't have all the answers, but she has a very strong sense of self.
What I appreciated most is that the story doesn't reduce her entire identity to “the pregnant girl.” She is still Xiaofang.
She has dreams, opinions, pride, doubts and, most importantly, the right to decide what she wants her own life to look like.
Instead of simply asking “Who is going to marry Xiaofang?”, the drama gradually turns the question into something much more interesting: “Why does Xiaofang have to define her future through marriage in the first place?”
One of the ideas that really stood out to me is the importance of taking your life back and making your own choices, even when everyone around you thinks they know better.
And I think that's exactly why the story works.
It isn't saying that marriage is bad.
It isn't saying that being alone is automatically better.
It is saying that marriage should be a choice, not a sentence.
And that your value shouldn't depend on whether you have a husband, whether your family approves of you, or whether your life follows the traditional script everyone expected. I really loved that.

Another thing I enjoyed was the family aspect.
There are a lot of characters, and at first it can feel like everyone is connected to everyone else in some complicated way. But that's also part of the charm.
These aren't perfect families.
They argue.
They judge each other.
They carry old grudges.
They worry about appearances.
They make mistakes.
And sometimes they behave absolutely ridiculously.
But underneath all of that, there is affection.
The drama understands that families can be both the people who frustrate you the most and the people who will eventually show up when you need them.

One thing I didn't expect was how much the drama would explore the lives of the people around her.
As Yang Fanyan starts digging deeper into the situation, she discovers that almost everyone around them is carrying some kind of secret, regret or unresolved problem. That gives the story a broader perspective. Xiaofang's pregnancy is the event that starts everything, but it isn't really the whole story.
I also appreciated that the drama doesn't make the romance the ultimate solution to every problem. The drama is more interested in asking what happens to Xiaofang as a person.

I really enjoyed Xiao Fang. It was one of those dramas that I started expecting something fairly simple and ended up getting much more from. It's funny without being empty. It's emotional without constantly trying to manipulate you. It's a family drama, but it doesn't forget the individual people inside the family.
And most importantly, I really liked what it had to say about women, marriage and the right to choose your own life.

Xiao Fang may look like a chaotic little rural marriage comedy at first, but underneath all the gossip, matchmaking and family madness, it has a surprisingly warm and thoughtful heart.

Uplifting, Refreshing, Realistic, Heartbreaking

Things I adored

1 The FL. She was perfection. She was her own woman. A strong woman who doesn't let anyone dictate her life. The world needs more people like her. I grew up in a small rural community. I know too well the struggles and how difficult it is to be your own person and shut out the noise. Everyone has an opinion, everyone is meaning well. At the end of the day no one lives your life. Her character is wonderful. From start to finish her strength is the highlight of the series.

2 The grandma. Such a great character. You don't expect her to be that progressive, that independent, that wise. My grandma was a strong woman with a sense of humor and she had only one rule. He grandchildren were not to be bullied by anyone. I miss her 20 years later like she left yesterday. I miss her arms around me, her unconditional love. It hit me hard this series because of the relationships between the characters.

3 The relationship with the father. I had a father who always told me I trust you to do the right thing. Even when we weren't on the same page, he never wavered his support. I realize how rare and how lucky it is to have that kind of parents. never take for granted your parents and your family. I miss him every day. I cried a lot at that last scene between the FL and her father. It was so well done, so heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

4 The scenery. It was breathtaking. I grew up in the mountains and in the city. I'm a sea girl over and over. Which shows that it doesn't matter where you grow up, your heart wants what it wants. But these landscapes were gorgeous. You dream of waking up every day with that view stretching out your window.

Things I loved

1 The FL family. Frustrating at times, but the family dynamic was realistic and tug in my heart so many times. Great depiction of how complicate family relationships can be. But you know if you have the chance to have that kind of family that love is what gets you through.

2 That she got a career. I hate series that pass the message that having a personal life, a family life and a career is incompatible. I loved that the FL was strong enough to no care and follow her path. It was great to see her succeed.

3 Her friends and cousins. Another support system that everyone needs in life. Again when you have it, don't take it for granted.

Things I liked

1 That the two grandfathers got to reconcile and started a new chapter. It can only be good for the little one and there's never enough love out there for children. Not a bad ending for them.

Things I disliked

1 The behavior of the ML. I could say hated it but I won't. because he was immature, but he wasn't a bad person. I know there are arguments to make about it, but to me, he was more immature than anything else. I don't dislike that he left pursuing his dreams. I think that was the right outcome. I have no doubt the screenwriter wanted to pass a message. That he'll be back a different person. Someone worthy of his child. Is it fair for the FL? No, of course not. She stays and he can live his life free from any constraints. But that's only one part of the story. What good would it be to have someone miserable and spineless and immature in your life? Better give time to time and let him grow up. No resentment, just a wise decision many should follow. Don't accept less than what you worth in life. Better alone than in bad company. So I'm quite happy with his arc.

Underrated..

I stumbled on this drama by chance.. and it was worth it.. if you need a break from the heavy serious dramas this provides that comedic relief.. the characters all have their own quirks in their personalities which made all of them lovable.. i love how the leading couple had such a pure kind of love.. the ML will definitely drive you crazy in the beginning but that's where the growth comes in.. about being a man and having a stance of your own in the family.. eventhough it was only a short drama the writers allowed the characters to build and grow without rushing it.. I truly enjoyed this one 💜
