Unmissable for dark crime/thriller fans
Despite not being a stranger to the genre having seen plenty of kdramas (such as Sherlock, Sketch, Taxi Driver and Signal), The Truth Within happens to be my first Chinese crime/thriller drama.Since having discovered Luo Yunxi thanks to TTEOTM, I had secretly hoped he would choose a thriller project someday (and a villain role in a modern project!) but didn't think that wish would be fulfilled so quickly - it's safe to say it did NOT DISSAPOINT.
It's been a long time since I binged a drama - even the best ones begs a slower watch at times. It wasn't so much about the action, which is reserved for the final explosive two episodes towards the finale, but it was the moments of absolute reflective quiet that draws the viewer in like bugs to a spider's cocoon. This is one of the strong highlights of Bojian.
Before you know it, you've been ensnared. 5 episodes are past you, and you've discovered another gem in Cdrama world.
What strikes Bojian different than the other crime works is the sheer creativity of each case relating to the Raw Diamond mystery, which remains as a larger, unresolved picture throughout the drama. Each victim and concept evokes the extremeties of both gut-lurching horror and reluctant fascination from the viewer, exploring the bounds of immorality humans are more than capable of.
The perpetrators and cases are fantastic in drawing a blend of thought provoking themes including moral ambiguity, grief, reasoning, justice and psychology. It ties all nicely together once the pattern is recognised. There are some taboo themes associated with some that are worth the praise for its inclusivity.
It's one thing to guess the perpertrators, and another layer of complexity behind how the crime was carried out. It's truly a feast for those who love mysteries, whodunnits, and analysing human behaviour.
There was a particular scene in EP16 where it was apparent Luo Yunxi's quiet voice adds an extra layer to the nail biting suspense, making the registration of what he is implying in an interrogation sequence far more foreboding and chilling than if he had shouted. It goes without saying his screen presence is immaculate, and in that few minutes it was like the feeling of watching the first scene of TTEOTM all over again, where the subtleties in his performance commands one's attention. I can assume it only appears as an effortless feat to those with no performance knowledge.
However that is not to say Bojian is without minor flaws. The drama is suprisingly shorter than anticipated, and the truth behind Fei's accident was underwhelming personally - it felt too clear cut and quick without specificities. Hence resolving the case felt too abrupt despite its full closure.
The drama ended up breaking my usual no-binge routine. The dark atmosphere, the slow, mellow music paired with undertones of depravity, and the ultimate hunger for truth makes it difficult to pull away from the story. Despite the flaws and hiccup with pacing at the final runs to Ep21, it's well worth the watch.

crime board with red string background
investigation, crime, and mystery drama. it starts with a police forensic doctor who tries to find out why he and his girlfriend had a car accident 2 years ago. but it actually opens up a whole chain of cases, from serial murders to a drug factory. the story moves really fast, and every case gets a clear ending so it doesn’t leave us confused. the autopsy scenes are quite detailed, so if you’re not from a medical background, it can be a bit hard to understand. the friendship between the police team members is really goals. the most heartbreaking part is when wan gets killed and zhu is caught in an explosion. you can really feel the loss and sadness. their emotional conflicts are also well shown, they have to stay professional even when they are not okay. if it wasn’t for qi sizhe being so stubborn and his big love for yu fei, maybe the secrets around him would never be revealedWas this review helpful to you?
Wow I am out of words!
What can I say? I am in ep 14 now, and it seems like you will be guessing until the very end. I really wish Luo Yunxi would take on more projects like this. All the other actors in the drama have done a 10/10 job as well. This drama reminds me alot of Justice in the Dark, gives similar vibes. I really wish I knew Mandarin at this point, so I would be able to focus more on the drama, especially the expressions, so I would not miss a single micro expression. Was this review helpful to you?

One of my all-time crime thrillers!
This was my first time watching Luo Yun Xi in a modern avatar, and he sure nailed it!“The Truth Within” doesn’t skim on the suspense from Day One. It spins fast, and you have a moment to get caught with the characters before they begin their active investigations. Starring Luo Yun Xi, Cya Liu & Jiang Qi Lin as the “Magic Trio”, the show slowly evolves into a mesh wall of crime scenes originating from a single scenario. The catch is that main lead Qi Sizhe is the only one who suspects that his girlfriend’s murder mystery is connected to the current serial murders happening one after another. Han Feng doesn’t entirely support his theory, so for the first half they are at loggerheads. And despite that, both have a tactile understanding that goes beyond their strained relationship. The investigations are dealt in an intelligent manner, fast & swift!

Decent Crime Drama
This was a decent crime drama, solving several cases with one over-arching one. The last case, which connected all the previous ones, was my least favorite unfortunately. Especially the last episode was kind of melodramatic, and I felt like the police forces were wasting time a lot (how long can it take infiltrating that building after Han Feng gave them the signal??). The last two episodes also feature a lot of shooting scenes, which I didn’t really enjoy that much, either. The sequences were wild and chaotic, the police officers just shooting shot after shot as if the guns had an infinite number of bullets available. Their aim was also all over the place (even if they are trying to eliminate a moving target). In earlier episodes I found their investigation style confusing because it seemed like the writers believed the audience to be blind to “details”. Background checks on individuals were lowkey incomplete, only to do a full one 1.5 episodes into a case while highlighting information from a witness account (I’m referring to the young woman not believing her mother died of natural causes; a colleague of hers tells the police that she had always been a top student in her grade, only to miss the college entrance exam. This was ignored for a while, until they decide to run another background check; here, the show gives a flashback to that testimony as if it’s such a minor detail that could have been easily (dis)missed… meanwhile, they could have solved the case quicker had they actually looked into the missed exam?! Also, Officer Zhu initially went to check that woman’s home, but did not see the medication scattered on the floor? When Ding You Mei’s mother first takes the blame for her daughter’s crime, she says how she threw the meds out of the woman’s reach… and when they go back to investigate the scene again, what do we see? The medication on the floor. Was this missed the first time they went to the premises?) … Anyway. Did the detectives have a life outside the police station? Doesn’t seem so. They went to eat out maybe 2 or 3 times, but that’s it. It’s a strict case-by-case show, and doesn’t really show any of the characters outside passions, which I found a bit unfortunate, but oh well.Except for the last case, I enjoyed the smaller cases a lot, especially the early episodes were tense and very intriguing. I found the performances of those supporting actors for each case compelling and well-executed since they actually had something to work with. The three main cops, later only reduced to Han Feng and Qi Si Zhe delivered good, but not outstanding, performances. I feel like they just weren’t given that much to work with (except episode 17/18; this personal loss was a good way to add a layer to the characters), and especially in the last few episodes I was missing tension, or rather emotional involvement.
Overall, a decent show with interesting cases!

Luo Yunxi is being brilliant again
So, at first I wasn't too happy with this drama. The first episode didn't really get me with the usual tropes of police behaviour. You know; yelling at the handcuffed suspect, slapping papers on desks, having the though guy attitude, female cop dressing like a butch, etc. I was seriously contemplating dropping it, then it finally became interesting.Luo Yunxi plays a brilliant forensic pathologist with the ability of remote crime solving. And this is already good enough, but thankfully, the drama doesn't revolve only and solely around him. His charisma and aura rule his scenes, but in meantime, he also gently downplays his own presence. He feels the difference between his xianxia and modern characters perfectly and doesn't aim to be the overruling star of every episode.
The crimes are interesting enough, the riddles are entertaining and creepy, clues are well and carefully hidden. The amount of horror is only as much as it's needed, like cognac in your coffee.
I like it. My favourite part, however, is the fact that this is the fourth time that Nian Baiyu (Li Jiahao) escorts our Tantai Jin to his endeavours. Well, we all heard him promising that he'd always stand by his Lord 😃
Nice modern drama and that comes from one who doesn't like modern dramas. Not even with Luo Yunxi. But this one gets green light from me.

Entertaining to watch !
This is easily Luo YunXi’s best drama in terms of camera work and cinematography. The visuals have a Netflix-style, Western crime vibe with beautiful framing, color aesthetics, and a strong crime-drama mood.I enjoyed all six cases, especially the side cases. My favorite is Li Xuting’s Spider Cocoon Murder just like Luo Yunxi said, the moment you suspect someone, they’re already dead 🤣

So well done, crime story
This is a very well done criminal story. Somewhat too scary and gory for me, I kept muting the sound as the music is so well done to stress the audience. I am not one for stressful series but all the actors are super. It is certainly worth watching if you like crime series. This is only my choice as I prefer light series with not much stress. Was this review helpful to you?

Reseña truth within
