The story is at its core rather simple, but it layers things quite effectively, so it has enough questions that need answers and things aren’t quite as it seems. There is enough escalation within the narrative, as the haunting mirrors the power grabs and struggles of those seeking control of the power within the palace, for the tension to slowly ramp up all the way to the end and keep the story engaging.
But it also keeps the storytelling tight enough while poring the focus on the characters, their journeys, and the complex relationships and guilt that comes with it that shape the story. In the end it Iall becomes symbolism for how cruelty and greed will eat you up and ultimately come back to haunt you.
The drama does a lot of storytelling just by evoking eerie atmosphere within the narrative and using stark color palettes and saturation, visually striking shots, and music to evoke mood and theme, as well as with just a look, or a scowl from the phenomenal cast of actors it had at its disposal. It manages to deliver a lot without words, and even the world building never feels too heavy or exposure. It is almost as if the drama relies on the viewer already knowing a bit of the myths surrounding ghosts.
The palace intrigue is kept relatively simple and a lot of it does feel eerie familiar, especially at the beginning, but as we got further into it one could appreciate how much the simplicity of the palace plot allowed the characters to breathe and come into their own. Despite the small number of episodes and running time compared to the standard kdrama, it did a lot of good character work within that tight frame. Truly no minute felt wasted.
And it manages to convey longing, love, and even romance in such a subtle way, as the leads sacrifice themselves to save the other repeatedly because they don’t have anyone else. And yet it always felt earned and never just because the story needed them to.
The action, visuals, creature design, and horror elements are all well executed, stunningly cinematic, and in general thrilling to watch. But I am not sure if it would have worked as well if the drama hadn’t done it’s due diligent to make the viewers care about and understand our two leads.
These two lost souls who have never once received respect or the love of their parents meeting a stranger who shows them the warmth they have been seeking, to the point that they want to fight the king, monsters, and even hell to hold onto that warmth just a little longer. That is the emotional tether of the drama and its heart, and the story utilizes that exceptionally.
It is rather obtuse about the ghosts and almost expects viewers to know, figure things out as they go along, or simply allow it all to remain shrouded in mist. That works here, because it helps the whole thing feel eerie, murky, and deeply atmospheric. And I for one enjoy media that trusts me as a viewer and doesn’t spoon-feed me info dumps. It also allows the atmosphere, character work, and relationships within the story to shine: the king and his daughter, the old women in the palace plotting behind the scenes, and the two leads all feels so raw and real. That brings out the emotional side of the story, which is where kdramas usually shine.
The East Palace keeps things simple but uses that to its advantage. You don’t need a crazy, new plot or endless twists and turns that shock the viewers. You need some heart and good characters to tell a story. And this story knew what to focus on, what to leave in shadow, and how to make its limited time frame count and what to make the narrative focus on so it never becomes just visually striking but hollow action-piece. For the horror and action to have actual stakes, the viewer must care about the characters, and that is where The East Palace succeeds most. Beneath the ghosts, some monsters of varying cuteness, palace politics, and blood spilling action, it is ultimately a story about two lonely people finding warmth in a world built on cruelty, and that emotional core is what lingers with the viewer long after the drama is finished.

A drama That Didn’t need a single Kiss
East Palace is a whole new level of masterpiece. 🤍✨ It gave me the same unforgettable feeling as Alchemy of Souls. The most impressive part? It didn’t need a single kissing scene to create incredible chemistry and keep me completely invested.The production quality, cinematography, soundtrack (musics), acting, and storytelling were absolutely next level. My only complaint is that it was too short. I just wanted the story to be much bigger so I could stay in this world a little longer.
Definitely one of the best dramas I’ve watched. ⭐️

Eight Episodes of Pure Entertainment
I really enjoyed East Palace. It was highly entertaining, direct, and incredibly easy to watch. With only eight episodes, the story never drags or loses focus, and there is genuinely never a dull moment. It is the kind of drama that is very easy to binge because every episode keeps the plot moving.The show is also surprisingly scary at times. You can immediately tell that it had a high budget, especially from the cinematography, costumes, visual effects, and overall production quality. A lot of effort clearly went into creating the atmosphere, and the horror elements were very well executed.
What surprised me most was how many twists the story had. The plot twists were genuinely good and often unexpected, because every time I thought I understood what was happening, the drama introduced something new. The ending also felt very open, so I am definitely expecting a second season.
It was also so nice to see Nam Joo-hyuk with long hair, and I really enjoyed the chemistry between the leads. Romance is not the main focus of the drama, but their dynamic still added something enjoyable to the story. Acting was also amazing.
Overall, I would definitely recommend East Palace. However, it may not be suitable for the faint-hearted because it is heavily based around horror and includes some disturbing and graphic scenes. Still, the story is well written, visually impressive, fast-paced, and extremely entertaining. It is the perfect drama to binge when you want something exciting, easy to follow, and full of surprises.

Definitely a GREAT watch!
I'm easily swayed with a well-done historical Korean fantasy drama ever since Alchemy of Souls, so The East Palace immediately caught my attention. I ended up binging the entire series in one day, and I honestly don't regret sacrificing my sleep for it. I was drawn in from the very first episode; it had that eerie, mysterious world with ghosts, curses, and palace politics that blended so naturally. Gu Cheon and Saeng Gang are that classic supernatural duo, but the execution made them feel so much more than that. Every case they investigated revealed another piece of the larger mystery surrounding the East Palace, and I loved how the drama slowly unraveled its secrets instead of rushing through them.Nam Joo Hyuk was fantastic as Gu Cheon. He carried that quiet confidence and strength without making the character feel cold or one-dimensional. You could tell there was so much weight behind everything he did, and he balanced the action scenes with emotional moments really well. Roh Yoon Seo completely won me over as Saeng Gang. She gave the character so much warmth and compassion while still feeling resilient in such terrifying situations. Her interactions with the spirits were some of my favorite scenes because they weren't just scary; they were often emotional too.
Their chemistry was another highlight, even though this was not a romantic drama. It wasn't an over-the-top romance, and I'm actually glad it wasn't. The trust they built as they worked together felt natural, and watching them slowly rely on each other made their partnership one of the strongest parts of the series. They complemented each other perfectly, with Gu Cheon's strength and experience balanced by Saeng Gang's empathy and unique connection to the dead.
Visually, this drama is gorgeous. Just wow! The way they go from the real world to the ghost/in between/spirit world is so well done, so beautiful. The cinematography, costumes, and palace sets were stunning, but what really impressed me was the atmosphere. The supernatural elements genuinely felt creepy without relying on cheap jump scares. Some scenes gave me chills, especially whenever they entered the spirit realm or encountered vengeful ghosts. The sound design also deserves credit because it added so much tension throughout the series.
I also appreciated that the ghosts weren't simply monsters to defeat. They had heartbreaking stories, and the drama took its time exploring why they lingered. Those moments added emotional depth and reminded me why I enjoy fantasy dramas that mix supernatural elements with human stories instead of focusing solely on action. The pacing worked surprisingly well for me. Every episode revealed something important, and I never felt like I was waiting for the story to move forward. Each revelation raised even more questions, making it incredibly easy to hit "Next Episode." Before I knew it, I'd finished the whole series.
Overall, The East Palace is exactly the kind of historical fantasy drama I've been hoping for. It has mystery, horror, emotional storytelling, beautiful visuals, compelling characters, and just enough romance to support the story without overshadowing it. If you loved Alchemy of Souls for its fantasy world-building and emotional character dynamics but are looking for something with a darker, more haunting atmosphere, I highly recommend giving this one a chance. It's easily one of my favorite Korean dramas of the year, and I already wish I could watch it again for the first time.

The Greatest Evil Spirit Is The Human Heart
The visuals were absolutely gorgeous. The entire production team has done a great job in creating those creepy-looking sets. The CGI was top-notch. The direction was fabulous, and the use of different colors was a brilliant idea. The choreography of the action scenes deserves a special mention. The story was not that special, honestly, but the execution was great. The entire team has done a great job. The cast, especially Nam Joo Hyuk was phenomenal. He looked absolutely lethal as the spirit slayer. The entire cast has done a great job. I was confused about who killed whom and who was the biggest villain here. That Queen Dowager and the king had thoroughly confused me. Overall, if you are not a horror lover, you might not like it. But for horror lovers, it could be a great one-time watch. I absolutely loved this drama.PS. That little always hungry gwimae "Kkeomeoksari" was such a cutie.

The drama spared nothing in displaying cinematography, visuals and aesthetics, that speaks volumes at sight and not just mere words, with variations of shots, colour blending, and different colour scheme; wide Landscape shots, beautiful scenic shots, opulent palace buildings, a visually striking contrast between the night blue surroundings and the warm-toned firelight, visual variations of colour schemes adding depth to the eerie Gwi world.The drama not only provides cinematography that conveys splendid vibes, but the actors also deliver great performances in their varied characters.
This drama marks Nam Joo Hyuk's lead role in the last three years, capturing the essence of his character change from a nonchalant and willful Gu Chron into someone trustworthy and caring
Roh Yoon Seo, as one of those actresses I haven't seen before, surprises me bit by bit, portraying the strong-willed Saeng Gang, who hides emotional scars, relating to her family, and gradually learns the secrets of the East Palace (with Gu Chron) over the course of the story.
Cho Seung Woo is that actor who owns his scenes, portraying the secretive and deceptive King Ju Sang, giving a perfect balance at, emotional restraint, lingering fatherly love and deep regret.
My major highlights from this drama is the gradual positive change of mindset as the leads interacted regularly, from the awkward and distrusting dialogues, into a genuine interaction and deep friendship, stemming from the cares they show, hidden underneath their stoic, distrusting appearance.
The drama gave a raw depiction on how cruel and ruthless humans go for power.
It was really heartbreaking, looking at the flashbacks of the King poisoning his own son for the secrets he learnt over the years, I found it hard believing a King (a Father) would murder his own son because of he knows some secrets. The King sending his daughter to be a court lady, for the fear of the disgrace she would bring to his power and his kingship, when people eventually learner of her abilities, was reasonable, but an utter disgrace unto him as a father. When the King immediately woke up from his death bed and ordered the death of more than a hundred people, presiding under his kingdom, it was utterly painful how he disregards human lives. With how cruel and ruthless the King was I gradually questioned myself if Gu Cheon protection was convenient with his amount of evil, he created a cause by several killings at innocent lives, the effects should have been his own death.
The King's mother who was seemingly innocent, was the utter depiction of evil, causing the death of innocent lives for the sake of power, the throne, your son's rule, she deserves a very cruel death, but the ending gave her nothing but freedom.
That was really satisfying as an ending; Saeng Gang dropping all her emotional burdens and personality restraint, crying helplessly at the river Gu Cheon mother died, just having that little hope he might come to life, That scene tore me. Gi Cheon spirit residing back in his body and that lovely hug with a very deep sense of a pure care, mended me - showing something intimate and romantic. Gu Cheon last interaction with the King was supposedly the best dialogue of this drama, it felt really playful. Gu Cheon heading out of the palace soliloquising whether the King would change his mind, and ask for his death, gave me a deep chuckle, Saeng Gang deciding to follow him to deal with his own affairs, proved an evident romantic relationship. The last scene in which that little creature (ggeokmasali), looking at that chain linking at the palace, gave hints to a S2
The east palace is a historical K drama that makes good use of supernatural (spirits and ghosts), in driving an effect, at the creulty of humans, perfectly blending mystery, long buried secrets and tip of intrigue, making the drama engaging, even towards the end, twists and turns exist at a minimal rate, as some of the twist were expected, but I say I enjoyed the series.

Taking Palace Intrigue to the Extreme
So many historical Kdramas focus on the control of power by way of controlling the throne. I've seen many historical Kdramas where there was a plot or subplot of someone (usually a high ranking official) who wanted to assume control of the throne, so they plotted and schemed to get the present king dethroned or killed, or the Crown Prince was killed so someone else's pick for heir would move up in line. This specific drama revolved around the consequences of such scheming for power.For 30 years, the bloodline and heirs of the king, were mysteriously killed off one by one. Deemed a curse by the pond spirit, the king engaged a young man gifted with the ability to cross over into the spirit world to do battle with this resentful, angry spirt who cursed the royal family seed because she was unfairly and tragically murdered. But once the pond spirit was gone, the deaths still happened. The plot thickens as the main characters discover that the evil doesn't reside with the spirits, it resides with the living. Spoiler alert---Those in power who have committed such atrocities, have to continue to kill anyone who finds out about their secrets. This is the story of murder after murder all for the desire for more power and control of the throne, and to silence anyone who finds out about the secret killings.
This made for a thrilling drama with all sorts of twists and turns. Acting, sets, costumes, fight scenes, and the ghoulish-side of it all were executed extremely well. My only criticism is the confusion of trying to keep straight who did what to whom and why. Plot twists are great in mysteries. Just when you have things figured out a twist is thrown in. I love these. This drama had that, but there were twists upon twists that, in my opinion, made the storyline a tad too complicated.
The two main leads, played by Nam Joo Hyuk and Roh Yoon Seo, were outstanding in their roles and really carried the drama. The visuals and special effects were also outstanding especially of the spirit world. And this drama gave birth to a mischievous little side character/spirit, Kkeomeoksali, who has taken the internet by storm. I predict this cute but evil little creature will be the next trending Labubu.
All in all an enjoyable and thrilling Kdrama, and at 8 episodes, it was just right.

The East Palace is a Korean drama that mixes history, mystery, and ghosts in a way that feels fresh and exciting. From the first episode, you can tell this show is different. Strange things are happening inside the Crown Prince’s palace, and nobody knows why. The air feels heavy, the halls feel dangerous, and every shadow looks like it’s hiding something.To solve this problem, the King secretly calls two special people. Gu Cheon is a quiet, strong man who can enter the ghost world and fight spirits with his sword. He doesn’t talk much, but he has a calm, powerful presence and. Court Lady Saeng Gang is the opposite — she can hear ghosts, even when no one else can.Watching these two work together is one of the best parts of the drama. Their teamwork feels natural and real.
The show is very easy to follow, even if you don’t usually watch supernatural stories. The pacing is smooth, the scenes are beautiful, and the ghost moments are scary but not too overwhelming. The drama keeps you curious without confusing you.
And of course… Geomoksalli. This tiny creature is honestly the cutest thing in the whole show. Even though the drama is dark and serious, Geomoksalli brings small moments of warmth. His big eyes, tiny body, and loyal personality make you smile every time he appears. He’s the perfect balance to the spooky atmosphere.
Overall, The East Palace is a fun, mysterious, and emotional drama that keeps you watching because you want answers — and because you fall in love with the characters, especially Geomoksalli.

Absolute triumph ❤️I am usually not a big fan of period or historical dramas, but this series completely blew me away! Blending a historical setting with dark horror elements was executed in a truly sublime, visually stunning way.

Outstanding Performance: The lead actor delivers an incredible, unforgettable performance, supported by an absolute top-tier cast. The only downside ? At just 6 episodes, it felt way too short because you simply can't get enough of it!

Excessive graphics and plot twists saved by a trio of engaging demon hunters
The East Palace features ride or die dynamics between its main cast involving Saeng Gang, the "court lady" who hears ghosts, Gu Cheon, the demon hunter who sees ghosts, and their dearest Ggeomeoksali (adopted adorable demon pet), that alone gives enough reason to watch this show. In fact, any genre you place these three in, is worth watching, just that in this particular scenario they had to deal with backstabbing demons and vengeful spirits in a palace full of secrets.I think I was unfair to this drama heading in with the mindset that it would be like Kingdom. Kingdom is a masterpiece and I will forever compare every historical horror with it, but The East Palace is a great watch in its own right and deserves to be seen for its interesting worldbuilding and cast.
The main negatives from my pov with this show is its heavy reliance on gamey CGI/VFX scenes which aren't really my cup of tea and the shots themselves losing pacing due to too much slo-mo. I think the plot twists in the screenplay could've also been limited to one or two because this too drags down the main conflict and overall pace of a 8 episode drama.
Regardless, like I said before, the lead duo (and the cutest labubu demon in kdrama land, Ggeomeoksali) carry this show and keep it engaging whenever they're on screen. Nam Joo Hyuk and Roh Yoon Seo have great chemistry, very devoted kindred spirits vibes, and give Gu Cheon and Saeng Gang a dynamic that feels far deeper than simple attraction but genuine love and care for the well being and safety of one another. Their love language is literally going through hell to save each other even at the cost of their own lives and their confessions are not corny "I love you"s but "I'll save you over and over in every lifetime if I had to" which is a recurring theme in so many romance dynamics this year with kdramas that i'm LOVING all this reciprocal love being showered by the kdrama gods after a looong drought filled with one-sided sacrifices mostly from male leads 🥹
I would be totally down for a s2 with this same trio, a tighter screenplay and fewer heavy graphics...

Stranger Things, but Make It Korean
If you're a fan of Stranger Things, then this drama is definitely worth checking out. As someone who's a huge Stranger Things fan, I enjoyed this series a lot. There are quite a few similarities from the mysterious alternate world that gives off Upside Down vibes to a terrifying supernatural force that reminded me of Vecna... except make it Korean, and honestly, much more powerful. (Sorry, Vecna, but you'd probably have a hard time surviving the East Palace.) It also helps that this was written by the same writer behind one of my all-time favorite k dramas "The Guest" so my expectations were already high.First of all, welcome back, Nam Joo Hyuk. I've been a fan of his since School 2015, so seeing him return after his military service was such a nice surprise. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better comeback project. His chemistry with Roh Yoon Seo was incredible. Even though this drama is labeled as having no romance, it's hard to ignore the feelings between their characters. The way they constantly risk their lives to protect each other speaks louder than words, and I found myself rooting for them the entire time.
It also feels like this series was written with another season in mind because I genuinely need more of this duo working together. Their teamwork and dynamic were one of the highlights of the show, and I don't think their story is over yet.
The main characters sacrificed so much for the king, and honestly, I spent half the series yelling at my screen, telling them to stop risking their lives for him. You really can't trust anyone inside the palace. Every time I thought I knew who was pulling the strings, another twist proved me wrong. The truth behind what was really happening in the palace completely caught me off guard.
And can we talk about the real MVP? Ggeomeoksali. Who's that? Well... you'll have to watch the drama to find out. Let's just Ggeomeoksali always save the day.
One thing I really appreciated was the pacing. There wasn't a single episode that felt like filler. This is easily one of my favorite K-dramas of the year. I'm a huge fan of supernatural mystery thrillers, and this drama delivered everything I wanted. If the creators decide to make another season, I'll be one of the first people waiting to watch it.
If you enjoy series like Stranger Things, The Guest, or supernatural thrillers with strong character dynamics and constant plot twists, I highly recommend giving this one a chance. It's an exciting ride from beginning to end, and I sincerely hope we get more k dramas like this in the future.

A integração de CGI com as filmagens estão num nível absurdo de bom.Escolheram os atores certos para cada personagem pq casou como uma luva! como fã do trabalho do Cho Seung Woo foi mto bom ver ele de volta aos papéis principais! Ver o Lee Jae Hoon voltando aos kdramas tb foi bom, apesar de ser só uma pontinha de nada ☺️
a história é mto consistente e a música muito condizente, quem montou a trilha sonora merece um prêmio.
Mas palmas dobradas para os criadores dos itens computadorizados, ficou extremamente bem feito. Gravei uma cena e mandei o vídeo para uma amiga q tem mto medo desse tipo de kdrama e ela ficou realmente com medo 😅
