When It Rains, It Pours

Captivating drama about fragile relationships and psychological journey

At first, I avoided this drama because of the infidelity theme but was actually quite surprised by how different it was. I feel like the story summary tricked me a lot. The drama focuses more on emotional connection and intimacy rather than lust.

The main character's current relationships in the story are extremely fragile in the first place. The infidelity serves as a catalyst for changes in both their lives. One thing I really appreciate is all the little details in the script; I feel you have to rewatch a second or third time to catch them all especially with the psychological abuse between Fujisawa and Sei. Lots of dialogues and details, especially in earlier episodes, will make you understand how Sei feels he is difficult to be with, or how because he has no connection to others in his life, he became grateful to Fujisawa for putting up with him. Another thing I really likes are the foreshadowing and symbolism. The droplets representing little sprinkles of desires. The rain bringing the two main characters closer and closer each time. The foreshadowing of phones being people's hidden secrets.

All four characters are well developed. The only setback was probably the length of this drama because the story and plot is quite detailed and needed few more episodes but they unfortunately end up with a shorter drama slot run. Hopefully they can follow up with a sequel since the books still has two other novels.

Love the cinematography, color grading and music. It is consistent to its theme. Lots of rewatch value for me personally because each time you will pick up details you did not before. Last, the casting was on point and the acting was perfect for me. Matsumoto Hiroki, as Fujisawa Kazuaki, though really stood out to me with his acting. He is such a toxic character but his eyes acting really show all the range of emotions he felt without much dialogues.

I think that watching every single episode 4 times says it all, no? Brilliant acting, skilled and charismatic actors, complex storyline , fabulous OST , beautiful visuals, cinematography and photography and everything you’d wish in a BL . I was tempted to take away half a point for its shortness and the rushed ending and also for ignoring Sei’s sexual assault (but that was the author’s fault and not the series’s) but I won’t because damn it, this a masterpiece and my fav BL ever. A special episode would have been like a gift from heaven but that’s ok, we’re happy with what we got. Japan, you’re awesome ! Arigato.

What a great piece of cinema! Lovely series!

Every frame on the series feels like a photography, all details at scenes are very well planned, it's so beautiful to watch. The plot around two young men with relationship issues, lack of communication but mainly lack of sex. The needs to explore their own sexuality is very intense, the protagonists need to talk about that even if all starts like anonymous emails between two co-workers.

We all can get in complicated relationships, and keep on going even if there is huge an visible problems on sight. This series explore that, our attaching to things that are hurting us and hurting the couple as a whole. Another Japanese series reminding us about the assertive communication inside a couple, in this case replaced with no censorship communication with a coworker.

The two young men drives the series with their inner emotional problems, letting go their loved ones to start something new, maybe more healthy, more communicative and lots of more sex. The end was happy ending, and includes everything I was expecting to happen, no need for any more chapter like other reviews said.

"When it rain, it pours" is worth watching it one more time, it's beautiful.

ABSOLUTE CINEMA

It almost feels unfair to rate this drama so high among a sea of very well done ones I've watched since it's pretty clear to me that the novel that is the source material for this must already be amazing in terms of premise and writing (I'm unable to find a translation of it in English so I can't say for sure), and I have a tendency to rate adaptations lower when I enjoyed the source material more. That being said, my mind unclouded by that type of judgement in this case, it feels safe to say that this is a nearly perfect mini series.

The portrayal of sexual frustration is so skillfully subtle yet so impactful, thanks to both the writing and the acting from every member of the cast. It lends a very real depressing atmosphere to the majority of the series until the last few minutes, but this only make the leads' interactions so much more stirring, beautiful, and sensual when it's called for. Their talks through email as well as the "reveal" were so hopeful and adorable. Not only that, but every little interaction with/between other characters felt so real in a way I can also only describe as cute, even the sad ones lol. Like I was watching actual tiny humans inside my screen with real lives of their own (???)

The narrative played out very well and I was hooked from the start. It's already been mentioned, but you can tell every actor in this was truly "in it" which is all one can ask for and allowed for great chemistry between everyone. A few moments related to the supporting characters in the last two episodes kind of left me desiring more, only because I wish the series could have been one or two episodes longer to spend a bit more time focusing on their stories and feelings, though I also want to consider the possibility of constraints due to being an adaptation. If this was a manga (my main area of expertise~) I would have liked to see a sappy bonus chapter of the main two consummating but I am happy with the way it ended here XD. With everything taken into account on top of my undeniable enjoyment of it, I feel this drama was incredible and I can't recommend it enough if you like realistic, sensual stories, and a rational but still hard-hitting dose of angst well-balanced with hopefulness.

P.S. if you enjoyed this drama you should try reading the manga "Kimi ga Boku no Subete" by Nishida Higashi, they both hit the same spot for me :-]

A bl about cheating..?

Let's start off by saying I do not condone cheating under any circumstances 🥲

That being said, this bl is a masterpiece. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. It's raw, real, and I felt the emotions through the screen. It explores complex relationships and real relationship issues.

I loved the complexity of Sei's relationship with his "friend". The explanation at the end was realistic, and it showed that sometimes, for whatever reason that may be, relationships just don't work out the way you wanted them to.

As for the other guy (my apologies, I forgot his name already), I also loved the realness of his relationship with his girlfriend. It showed real issues a relationship can encounter, and that sometimes, it just doesn't work out.

My only complaint is the fact that there was no communication in either relationships, when the problem could've easily been resolved with a long talk. Cheating is never the answer. But I get it, it's for the plot ;)

I also wish we'd gotten more epilogue. I absolutely love the main couple, and I wish we'd gotten to see more of their relationship. But the story did end at a good time. This drama was short, but it said everything that needed to be said.

I'd definitely watch this again!

Great Chemistry, Rushed Story & an Unforgivable Character

This was way too short for my liking! I absolutely loved their chemistry, but it felt like they barely met ten times before it was over. Such a shame—I wanted to see more of them! I really don’t like shows that end the moment the couple gets together. That’s just the beginning of their relationship, and we don’t even get to witness its development. I wanted to see them navigate their feelings, face challenges as a couple, and grow together, but instead, it just ended before any of that could happen.

That being said, the actors did an amazing job bringing their characters to life, even that jerk Kazuaki. As much as I despised him, I have to admit his actor portrayed his character really well. I hated how Sei didn’t hold him accountable for his actions and just forgave him like it was nothing. It made no sense considering everything that happened. And Kazuaki’s sob story? Completely ridiculous. It felt like the show was trying to excuse his behavior, but it didn’t work at all. He can rot in hell for all I care.

Quand il pleut, le cœur trouve son propre rythme...

C'est un drame qui met en lumière la difficulté d'avancer dans une relation lorsque les besoins ne sont pas satisfaits. Cette remise en question, alors qu'on pensait que l'autre était, en quelque sorte, la réponse à tout...

Aimer quelqu'un et laisser quelqu'un nous aimer, c'est difficile. Partager une relation l'est tout autant, parce qu'elle demande des efforts permanents. Au Japon, il n'est pas rare de voir des couples (notamment mariés) qui ne partagent aucune intimité, tout autant qu'il est commun de voir des infidélités. Sur ce point, When It Rains It Pours sait comment le mettre en scène. Il y a quelque chose d'extrêmement triste dans le fait d'être en couple, mais d’avoir le sentiment d’être seul(e). C'est la façon dont j'ai perçu les relations de Hagiwara et Sei.

D'un côté, il y a Hagiwara Kazuaki (Muto Jun), qui vit avec sa petite amie, Mizutani Kaori (Akita Shiori) et qui pense au mariage. Pourtant, dès qu'il cherche à partager un moment intime, elle le rejette. Sa petite amie n'aime plus avoir de relations intimes avec lui, décidant que son côté viril est désagréable. Un trait qui contraste franchement avec la relation qu'il va développer au côté de Sei. D'ailleurs, Nakarei Sei (Ito Asahi) vit avec Fujisawa Kazuaki (Matsumoto Hiroki). C'est un couple, mais sans en être réellement un. Ils partagent un appartement ensemble, mais Fujisawa refuse d'avoir des rapports intimes avec lui. Au fil du temps, Fujisawa l'a isolé, le rendant presque dépendant. Alors que Sei se compare à un parasite dans la vie de Fujisawa.

Ce sont deux couples différents, mais avec un point commun : ils n'ont pas de rapports intimes. Après une erreur de mail, Hagiwara Kazuaki et Nakarei Sei vont discuter. Peu importe qu'ils ont des orientations différentes, cela ne change pas grand-chose dans le fait de pouvoir en parler. La pudeur japonaise n'est pas nouvelle, cela dit, c'était agréable de voir la curiosité et l'honnêteté dans leurs échanges. En particulier Nakarei Sei qui est aussi franc qu'une lame fraîchement aiguisée. Alors qu'ils découvrent être collègues, ils finissent par se rapprocher et passer la nuit ensemble.

Si l'histoire repose sur l'infidélité, il ne s'agit pas seulement d'une partie de jambes en l'air. C'est tellement plus ! C'est un trop-plein qu'ils ont évacué avant de réaliser que les sentiments sont déjà là… Parfois, les sentiments grandissent et s'installent confortablement et cela nous demande du temps pour réaliser qu'ils sont là. Les sentiments sont progressifs, mais de redoutables vicieux qui savent se faire discrets, jusqu'au moment où ils décident de se montrer. Ou, à l'inverse, les sentiments s'effacent et on ne le remarque qu’une fois qu'ils ont tous disparu. Hagiwara et Sei ont trouvé en l'autre la façon de satisfaire leurs désirs. Ils ne suivent plus le rythme des autres, mais le leur.

L'ensemble des acteurs était formidable, tout comme le développement des personnages. La photographie est superbe avec de magnifiques plans sous la pluie. J'ai apprécié la simplicité de l'histoire et l'absence de crises de larmes. Mon seul regret est qu'un épisode supplémentaire aurait pu amener une fin plus honorable. Bien que ce soit une bonne fin, il lui manque un petit quelque chose. Je chipote ? Peut-être.

En bref, il faudra passer au-delà de l'infidélité pour capturer chaque émotion When It Rains It Pours. Bien que l'histoire soit simple, elle n'en est pas moins intense et pleine de réflexions sur ce qu'on attend d'une relation avec des personnages intéressants et honnêtes.

Se você espera um bl cheio de amorzinho, desista.
Esse bl é maravilhoso, em todos os aspectos.
Cada um dos atores interpretou seu papel muito bem. A atuação de todos foi muito boa.
O casal principal mostrou que tudo nessa vida tem um começo um meio e um fim.
Nakarai Sei a vida toda amou o Fujisawa Kazuaki que nunca teve coragem pra tomar nenhuma atitude a respeito do sentimento que ele sentia. Muito pelo contrário, fez uma escolha que entrou em rota de colisão com um sentimento que tinha tudo pra ser maravilhoso. Nakarai Sei, conheceu uma pessoa o Hagiwara Kazuaki que o tratou com toda a gentileza e respeito que ele sempre mereceu.
Hagiwara Kazuaki tinha um relacionamento com a Shinomiya que nunca saiu de um relacionamento de puro egoísmo por parte dela. Um relacionamento sem grandes avanços. E ficou nada com coisa nenhuma.
A partir do momento em que se encontraram Hagiwara Kazuaki e Nakarai Sei tudo mudou. E que bom que mudou, ambos descobriram um sentimento que sempre procuraram.
Adorei o final, e adorei esse bl, nada ficou para ser explicado, como muitos bls.
Tudo teve uma explicação, tdas as respostas vieram e foram muito boas.

Quando chove, desaba...

Eu não me canso de elogiar a profundidade e densidade das histórias nos dramas japoneses, principalmente em suas analogias com água (seja ela chuva, tempestade, oceano e piscinas).

Para entender o peso deste drama é preciso se lembrar que estamos falando de um drama japonês, em um país onde os casais não tem comunicação clara e há estudos que mostram o quão arruinados são os relacionamentos pela falta de intimidade com seus parceiros. É claro que não é apenas um problema do Japão, é uma tendencia global as pessoas não terem interesse em ter uma vida sexual ativa, principalmente os mais jovens.

Não é preciso vivenciar o que o Hagiwara sentia em seu relacionamento com a Kaori para entender sua dor ao ser rejeitado e sua ansia em ter uma conexão física. O desejo é muito individual, mas ai que entra a responsabilidade afetiva e como a comunicação entre o casal é essencial, tanto para quebrar o ciclo quanto para dar adeus.
Eu fiquei completamente triste com a cena íntima do Hagiwara com o Nakarai, pois o que parecia ser apenas um desejo, revelou uma carga e ferida emocional enorme que ele tinha. E isso me fez chorar, porque não era apenas fazer sexo.
Me revoltou o questionamento da Kaori por ele estar com um homem e ela foi uma pessoa totalmente egoísta em não ser honesta com ele sobre o seu desinteresse sexual.

Já o Nakarai com o seu não-relacionamento-mas-relacionamento com o seu melhor amigo, mostra o quão submissos podemos ser em aceitar migalhas por um sentimento de gratidão. Já Kazuaki se sentia culpado e rejeitava de todas as formas alguém que dizia amar desde sempre, eu suspeitei que ele tinha outra pessoa desde o início, mas quando é revelado o motivo me deixou completamente puta da vida kkkkk Mas então voltei e pensei: estamos falando do japão, qual é o contexto lá?, e isso me fez ter pena, porque ele perdeu a pessoa que amava pelo seu próprio medo e peso mental, que em uma comunicação poderia ter sido sanada.

Eu sei, para mulheres o desejo sexual pelo seu parceiro tende a ser um conjunto de coisas, porque senão, de fato, a chama se apaga e vira até mesmo um martírio pensar na possibilidade de fazer algo.
E eu sei também que o amor, a vontade de estar ao lado da outra pessoa, pode fazer com que deixemos o que é importante para nós de lado, só para não perdermos aquela pessoa, mas é justo? É isso que merecemos? O drama traz reflexões ótimas, valeu cada minuto.

Um dos meus BLs favoritos japones

Percebi que nunca tinha feito uma resenha sobre esse BL. Hoje eu o reassisti e pensei que deveria. Particularmente gosto muito de assistir qualquer coisa que tenha esse enredo de relacionamentos, dramas familiares e tals. Sem um vilão que separa o casal ou algo assim, apenas uma historia mais vida real.
Esse BL me tira da minha zona de conforto, porque me vi compactuando com coisas que não concordo, como a traição KKKKKKKKKKK Só que nesse caso é para assistirmos e pensarmos na vida real. Não quer dizer que temos que concordar com o que os protagonistas fizeram, não foi certo e isso é um fato, porém é compreensivel. Existiam outras maneiras de resolver os problemas deles? Sim, só que da mesma forma que muitas vezes fazemos escolhas erradas, os personagens também fazem.
Na situação dos quatro personagens, só não consegui entender o lado do parceiro do Nakarai, porque a maneira agressiva como ele reagiu ao descobrir a "traição" não me agradou. Nos meus paremetros, traição e agressão não tem o mesmo peso, e uma não justifica a outra. Então, apesar da traição, na minha opinião isso não dá abertura para você quebrar o celular do seu parceiro na parede de um jeito assustador, que me causou gatilhos, e depois forçar uma relação sexual mesmo com ele dizendo que não queria (Deixando claro que eles não eram namorados, então não é exatamente uma traição no caso deles, mas, ainda que fosse, não justificaria a reação do cara) Enfim, não gosto desse personagem.
Agora, sobre a namorada do Kazuaki, vi muitas pessoas nos comentarios na época em que assisti, xingando ela e tudo mais, enquanto com o parceiro do Nakarai ninguém dizia nada. Vi até edits dele no TikTok. Dá para perceber a diferença e o nome que isso tem. Porque ela não fez nada além do que se faria se descobrisse estar sendo traida, e o fato dela não querer transar com ele não era algo abominavel, ele deveria ter dito estar insatisfeito também, no caso deles, ambos tinham que ter conversado e ambos tem culpa do relacionamento estar uma merda. Voltando a ela, acho que tinha muitas questões pessoais que a faziam não querer ter relações com o namorado. Poderia ser porque ela fosse assexual, poderia ser por traumas que ela não lembrava, poderia ser por ela apenas não gostar ou algo que acontece muito e que me fez pensar nisso quando ela diz que não gosta do lado "masculino" dele: você não saber que é lésbica, nunca curtir sexo com seu parceiro e seguir a vida achando que aquilo acontece com toda mulher de não curtir relações com o parceiro, quando muitas vezes você só não gosta de homens. Não sei qual era a situação dela, mas senti empatia. E apesar dos pensamentos homofóbicos dela ao descobrir que foi traida com um homem, ainda senti muita pena, ninguém merece ser traida.
Sobre o Nakarai, ele tem um passado triste. Ele só tinha o amigo como apoio e era apaixonado por ele, deixando isso claro várias vezes. Só que por motivos de culpa, o amigo acabou mantendo distancia. O Nakarai se forçou muito a caber onde não havia espaço. Ele poderia ter seguido em frente e tentado superar seus sentimentos, porque, como disse antes, o amigo dele não seria uma boa pessoa para se relacionar. Ele escolheu não se envolver com o Nakarai, mas em um surto de ciúmes, fez o que fez.
Resumindo, gostei muito desse BL justamente porque ele dá muito o que falar. Dá para analisar cada personagem, os acontecimentos e várias questões sobre relacionamentos. Eu gosto de assistir algo e ficar um tempão divagando sobre aquilo, sobre as escolhas questionaveis dos personagens. Vale muito a pena. Apesar disso, eu gostaria que tivesse mais episodios mostrando os protagonistas lidando com o relacionamento entre eles, como seria, se daria certo, já que tinham tanto em comum e se davam tão bem.
