Dreadful but fun BL mini drama

Another completely biased review from me to you. Warning, spoilers ahead.

File this one under its so awful it's good? Why did I finish watching this? I guess solely for the 2 MLs. They are both just lovely. Hair/makeup/ wardrobe are 😘

I really enjoyed the first 2 episodes with the 2 MLs. I mean, it was bad but funny. 🥰
But then episodes 3 and 4 they threw in some really really REALLY terrible actress playing a seductive toddler who keeps trying to rape one of the MLs and ick. 🤮Yeah, really, she does that. Luckily he is rescued in time by the other ML! Love his line: "Serves you right for lusting after women" 🤣

I watched this on youtube where they combined 2 short episodes into one slightly less short episode. So maybe something got lost during the combination, but between each double episode there is an obvious gap. One episode the 2 MLs are somewhere chatting and then boom next episode they are someplace completely different in the middle of another scene that makes no sense!

Special shoutout and kudos to the set designer for episodes 19-20. I've not seen anything that looks like an old timey Star Trek episode quite like that cave scene with the moving boulders. 🪨Thank you! I haven't laughed so much in a while! 🤣

I loved the ending. Yes, lame as hell, but even with 'modern' hair they both look pretty! 🥰😘

So is it worth it? I had fun watching it! It didn't take up much of my time or brain cells. ⌛🧠 Bad acting and sets and music and all! The 2 MLs really were pretty together.😍 I would love to see them again in something that gives them a bit of room to stretch! Would I watch it again? Hells no, they are pretty but not THAT pretty! 🤣

Entertaining, Enjoyable and Escapism par excellence

I downright fall under the spell of certain themes in either movies or series. This series had two of my favorites. Time travel and swashbuckling epic times full of exotic and romantic lore, legends, and traditions. And especially given my naïve Western upbringing, I am heart and soul smitten by Chinese fable and mythology. This series transported me back into time, like with the character, where I too could imagine myself beside them. This is a very short series and fast paced. The editing is very abrupt, and it feels as if a lot of the story is ‘missing’. While the narrative flows linearly, how it gets there is perplexing. Transitions between scenes are choppy and there seems to be gaps. But honestly, the acting is very good as well as the cinematography. The special effects were both good and bad, in the sense they were sometimes amateurish. The costumes were excellent and so were the overall scenes. This is a very enjoyable way to spend an hour of escapism. For those of us who still dream and use this as our flight of fancy, it was captivating and romantic. Perhaps I got too carried away, but I do not care. I am smiling as I write this. I think you will smile also.

Amazing? Not really. But enjoyable? Absolutely.

This show's episodes all together last for about an hour and ten minutes, give or take a few seconds. And I'll be honest, the editing in this one was beyond messy. There are a lot of time jumps after which there's a short summary in the dialogue of what may or may not have happened off screen. Sometimes not even that. It's clearly a low budget drama, it being a web drama and micro series of 3 minutes per episode does not help in that regard.

So why did I rate it the way I did?

Well even for a low budget drama, the set, wardrobe, make up and visual effects weren't half bad. I've seen a lot worse. Also knowing this was a web drama, my expectations were low to begin with, and I've been pleasantly surprised by what I got. The two leads have great chemistry, even through the choppy editing and fast pace you can still see a bond forming between characters. The acting of the leads was great for what they had to work with. The supporting cast a little less so, but not bad enough to call it quits.

The story itself could perhaps have been better. Maybe that's also due to the 3 minutes per episode and the weird editing (yes i will keep mentioning this because it threw me off and if you don't prepare for it, it'll probably throw you off too. ) There just wasn't enough time to really give each character a good arc to grow and go in depth. The villain was a bit cartoony-ish at certain points. And though there seem to be some angsty moments (and some whump), i do consider this show to have a happy ending.

Despite that, i do enjoy the time travel trope and the soulmate trope. Which were kind of mashed into one in this show. It's listed as a Danmei, but we all know China's censorship doesn't give us anything more than longing stares. This one too does have some very nice tension charged moments, but no more than that. So whether it is a real BL or just a bromance is heavily up for debate.

I did very much enjoy this for what it was. (an absolute trainwreck. I mean... what's with the editing?)
Is it the best Web Drama out there? Absolutely not. But would I watch it again just for fun? Sure.
I suppose if you can get past the time skips, low budget and censorship you won't waste your time watching this.

A Bromance Worth Your Time, Watch It ASAP!!

Perhaps I have always secretly harbored a desire to be a valiant hero from another culture in the past.

A modern teen named Quin Fang (Hyde) has been born into a family renowned for their swordsmanship skills. Touring and messing with one of the family swords, he is suddenly transported magically back to the Qin Dynasty. By accident and under rather unpleasant circumstances, he meets Meng Yu (Huang Jing Zhou). Meng Yu is an orphan from a rival tribe of Quin Fang’s ancestors. Meng Yu is heavily engaged in a conflict with some henchmen when Quin Fang ‘intervenes’. The two escape, each with conflicting opinions about the emperor’s motives. They begin a quest to meet the first emperor who unites China to discover what his true intentions are. Their story peels back myths, legends, truths, and realities with each learning much about the other they did not know.
