No storyline

The drama is good and definitely watchable, but it’s not as great as the hype made it out to be especially all that talk about how amazing their pairing would be. I think the chemistry also feels a bit off,it’s not as perfect as expected. However, if I talk about the acting, everyone has done a good job.
But the story isn’t anything special. I mean, what even is the story? It just shows how the two characters fall in love and that’s it. I dont know about coming episode but its 6 episode shory shold be unfold but now ...There should be a proper storyline, right? Instead, it feels like the same cliché, copy-paste scenes that we see in every drama. So far, I honestly can’t figure out what direction this drama is going in or what its main point is.

The drama lost my respect at episode 9!

Till episode 8, I was able to see only visual elements in the story - Beauty, fashion, visual perfection. But story wise, nothing! Still, it was at least a little entertaining.

However, in episode 9, I lost respect for the main characters. They deceived the nation, the rulers, their families, and everyone with the contract agreement. Okay. I understand that initially they did it and later they developed feelings. But, they didn't dispose off the contract right? So, the evil people used it to frame the couple and chase the male lead out of the palace. Understandable. What else can you expect from a evil character, right?

However, isn't it a fact that the contract was real? Did the villains fabricate the contract?? No. Absolutely not! Then, don't the royal contract couple need to explain that to the public sincerely and apologize for it? Absolutely.

Okay, let's say that they didn't do it because they were aiming for a perfect time to settle the matter, then did they show such a remorse internally? Did they have any guilt or shame for deceiving an entire nation? Nope. Not an ounce!

Alright fine. Then, what else were they doing if not even think about their mistakes or how to ask forgiveness from the people?? Oh let me tell you the golden reactions and proceedings - First, the female character rolled her eyes because the evil queen mom called the council of royal relatives. And why did she roll her eyes? Because the queen mom stated facts and female lead couldn't accept it coming from evil queen mom with evil intentions. But was what the evil queen mom said wrong or something?? Nope. She was absolutely right to anger, to call the council, to reprimand them for making a fool of the nation. But the lead characters' priority? Oww we are butt hurt.. you evil evil queen mom.. comfort me.. comfort us..aww.. BULLSHIT!

Next, what else were they doing if not thinking about an apology?? Oh this is pure gold- they were thinking about saving their asses. Oh wait.. don't be so kind.. just give it straight, what did they do?? They were tirelessly working day and night worrying about their royal positions BUAHAHAHAHA!

I'm an adult. I know the weight of what the people of a nation expect from their ruler and leader who they look up to, who will not just lay rules upon the people, but also set an example to follow. Unfortunately, as the drama focused too much on the visual elements, I guess they forgot to put some thought into their character building. They glorified arrogance and selfishness and projected an idea that these lowly and nasty qualities are acceptable if the visuals are in place.

Drama dropped as I lost respect. Kuddos to everyone that made it. You are the people that make the world more beautiful!

Started off strong but disappointing til the end...

I was anticipating this show since BWS attained huge popularity with Lovely Runner acting alongside with IU with good hits under her belt. Aesthetically, they did do their diligence with the small details being such a high-profile drama. It had the perfect elements for another success and it does bring in the hype but fails to meet expectations. However, that being said, there are many cliché moments and classic tropes like marriage for convenience and I find it hard to relate to the characters.

IU's role was a borderline narcissistic elite CEO who almost appears rude, vain and degrades others at times like they are beneath her that its hard to garner empathy for her when she encounters problems in the palace because she placed herself in that position willingly. Her endless pursuit for prestige/class felt like a waste of time with how it ended. Was it just greed for her to want more when she was already at the top of her game? ML also did not shine in his role, he has a model demeanor and it feels like he is just FL's trophy husband who just happens to be good-looking with a royal title.

Don't get me wrong, this show does have ample opportunity but it just doesn't live up to it's hype. One cannot get past sometimes how shallow and superficial the show really is. Despite all of it's short-comings, it does garner in a solid fanbase and ratings just from the star power and an ambiance of grandiosity, marking off categories like top choreography and acting in these areas. Chemistry is 50/50 but it's there no doubt.

I am being critical of this show just because it brings with high expectation with a stellar case so I rate it 6.5/10. I will still recommend to watch it but go in with little expectations instead of a solid written script.

WELLLLL

it started out great and went flat hill. I heard a lot of bad reviews about this especially about the acting and the plot but I didn’t care because I don’t mind watching trashy acting especially when they’re fine and are my favs so I still tuned in cause I was curious about the plot and because of IU. it started out so good that made me wonder why people hated it, but it went downhill to the point that the last two episodes I was skipping the hell out of it. So much was going on and it was confusing I could not even tell who are the villain cause everything was just off😭. I really like IU that why I tuned in and she was perfect for this role and I love her performance and for byeo woo seok he was okay I guess was there for his face and nice body. tbh I don’t think this is bad just the ending lol could have been better

Perfect Crown : (Character Synopsis)

In this drama, the female lead (IU) runs a powerful beauty company called Beauty Castle, making her a successful and independent CEO in the modern business world. Her character is a mix of moody and slightly comedic — she’s strong, confident, but also has those cute, unpredictable moments that make her feel real and relatable.

On the other hand, the male lead (Wooseok) is a crown prince in the 21st century, but unlike traditional kings, he doesn’t hold real power. The royal family exists more as a symbol, so he often feels trapped between expectations and reality. Despite being a prince, he struggles with authority and identity, which makes his character more emotional and human rather than powerful.

Their story becomes interesting when these two completely different worlds collide — a strong, self-made businesswoman and a powerless prince — leading to a relationship that starts with control and duty, but slowly turns into something deeper and more genuine. 💫👑😍

Perfect Crown is a romantic drama set in the high-stakes world of power, reputation, and hidden identities.
The story follows a strong but misunderstood young woman who suddenly finds herself pulled into the life of Korea's elite-specifically, a powerful and wealthy family often referred to as the "royal crown" of modern society. On the outside, everything about this family looks perfect: influence, beauty, and control. But behind the scenes, they are filled with secrets, pressure, and emotional distance.
The male lead is the cold, perfectionist heir to this powerful legacy. He has spent his whole life maintaining an image of flawlessness, never showing weakness. However, his life begins to charyte wherpredcrosses paths with 15 the female lead, who is honest, bold, and not afraid to challenge him.
As their relationship develops, the drama explores themes of love versus duty, identity, and the cost of perfection. The female lead starts to uncover the hidden truths behind the "perfect crown," including family conflicts,
betrayals, and the emotional scars the male lead carries.
Their romance grows slowly-from misunderstandings and tension to deep emotional connection-but it is constantly tested by societal expectations, family control, and painful secrets from the past.

In the end, Perfect Crown is about breaking free from the pressure to be perfect and choosing real happiness over appearances.

I was initially hesitant about whether to watch this drama or not, but this drama did not disappoint me.
Episodes 1 to 4 will keep you hooked to the drama.
feels like I've only seen one episode, but to think it's already episode 5, and I won't be able to watch it until next week!
It breaks my heart to see them thinking of each other.

A Visually Stunning but Flawed Drama

I love the side characters, especially the ones who worked in the palace. They were so warm, loving, funny, and friendly. I'm such a sucker for side characters who bring so much heart and warmth into a drama because they make the world feel alive instead of just existing for the main plot. They added so much charm to the story, and honestly, some of my favorite scenes involved them more than the main plot itself. I love Choi Hyeon, Grand Prince Yi An's assistant. He was extremely loyal and funny. I found him so enduring.

This is the first drama I've ever watched from Gong Seung Yeon, and she did an absolutely amazing job as Yun I Rang. To be quite honest, besides the side characters, she definitely carried the drama for me. She brought so much emotional depth and elegance to the role without overdoing it. Her expressions alone told you exactly what her character was feeling. I also liked that Yun I Rang didn't feel one dimensional. She could be vulnerable, intelligent, composed, and emotional all at once, which made her feel fleshed out and human instead of just another typical villain.

I also seem to fall into the minority regarding IU's performance as Seong Hui Ju. I don't necessarily know if it was outright miscasting, but I often felt as though the performance was straining too hard toward authority and charisma instead of naturally embodying those qualities. As a result, Seong Hui Ju frequently came across as performatively arrogant rather than genuinely commanding. The moments where IU softened her performance were the moments where Seong Hui Ju became significantly more believable and emotionally grounded.

As for Byeon Woo Seok as Grand Prince Yi An, I thought he performed well within the limitations of the material, though I ultimately found the character somewhat underwritten. Grand Prince Yi An often felt less like a fully realized person and more like an idealized construct of nobility, intelligence, and emotional restraint. Personally, I like characters defined by contradiction, vulnerability, and internal conflict, so I found myself wishing the writers did more. I also disagree with criticisms that Byeon Woo Seok's acting was stiff. To me, the restraint in his performance felt intentional and entirely consistent with the realities of royal life within the drama's political environment. A figure in Grand Prince Yi An's position can't afford emotional transparency because vulnerability immediately becomes exploitable. In that sense, the emotional distance in his characterization made thematic sense.

Steve Noh as Min Jeong U did a really great job too, but I seriously hate when writers make a character's entire identity revolve around loving the male or female lead. That's exactly what happened with Min Jeong U. If you remove the fact that he was in love with Seong Hui Ju, what character do you really get underneath all of that? Not much. That's frustrating because Steve Noh clearly brought enough charisma and presence to make the character more interesting, but the writing never allowed him to fully stand on his own. He constantly felt trapped in the role of emotional support and longing rather than being given his own ambitions, motivations, or storyline outside of romance. Characters become way more compelling when they exist as individuals first instead of just being a plot device, because when you remove Min Jeong U from the story, Yun I Rang realistically could've fulfilled the same narrative role he did.

My favorite scene in the entire drama had to be the fan scene where Grand Prince Yi An used the fan to cover the lower half of his face. You could immediately tell it was an incredibly intimate scene even before the meaning behind it was revealed. It felt subtle, restrained, and emotionally charged. And for those who don't know, in Victorian era fan language, covering the lower half of the face with a fan symbolized "I love you," which made the callback even more romantic and meaningful. What I loved most was that the drama didn't need a huge confession or dramatic dialogue. That scene alone was enough for me.

Perfect Crown Review: Finding Quiet Comfort in a Modern Joseon Rom-Com

Sometimes, we do not need a narrative to challenge us with heavy palace politics, intricate plots, or deep angst. Sometimes, we simply need a story to offer a quiet, fluttering romance and a place to rest. Perfect Crown is exactly this kind of rare rom-com gem. It is silly, cute, and fluffy, carrying the nostalgic warmth of the classic romantic comedies we used to love so much.

The Synopsis
Set against the interesting premise of a modern-day Joseon dynasty governed by a constitutional monarchy, the story unfolds within the rigid social hierarchies dividing nobles and commoners. Seong Huiju is a stubborn, strong-willed woman who fights not necessarily for sweeping social equality, but fiercely for what she deems her own right. Opposite her is Prince I-An, a seemingly perfect, regal romantic who has spent his life dimming his own shine so as to not overshadow others. Together, their journey moves past the straightforward tropes of the genre to become a quiet, fierce pursuit of personal freedom.

The Cast & Chemistry
The drama does not bank on strict naturalism, instead relying on exaggerated scenarios and expressions to create its comedy. Yet, the leads carry this weight effortlessly, anchoring the emotional depth of the series.

IU (Seong Huiju): She plays Huiju as someone kind in her own way, yet unapologetically selfish in her own right. Her character is not necessarily written to be relatable, but IU makes her undeniably enjoyable to watch.

Byeon Woo-seok (Prince I-An): He brings a palpable chemistry to the screen, balancing the sassy, dramatic moments with sincere vulnerability. He beautifully captures the quiet exhaustion of a prince who harbors unspeakable desires for power, understood only by Huiju.

The Good & The Bad
The Good:
- The drama is visually pleasing, offering beautiful cinematography and stunning costumes that seamlessly fuse traditional and modern styles.
- The narrative makes the structurally perfect and shocking choice to abolish the monarchy in the finale. This political shift seamlessly erases the class divide, serving as a profound, full-circle victory for Huiju's younger self.
- The resolution illustrates that I-An’s heart never truly yearned for the heavy burden of the throne, giving him a beautiful, poetic ending.
- The comedy actually delivers, providing enough suspense and laughter to keep the straightforward story moving at an enjoyable pace.

The Bad:
- For a premise with such huge potential for complex political exploration, the narrative leaves those depths largely untouched, which may disappoint some viewers.
- The writing unfortunately fumbles near the end, with the final arc suffering from shaky pacing.
- Given the strong buildup of the first eight episodes, the ending leaves a few loose ends unattended, and certain character motives fall flat.

The Verdict: 8.5/10
If you approach Perfect Crown expecting an intricate plot and complex characters, you will find yourself analyzing a story that never promised to be a gripping political thriller. It is an imperfect journey; it has its fair share of flaws, and the final arc leaves behind a slight feeling of dissatisfaction.

Not Bad, But Not Good

Perfect Crown starts off quite strong but gradually loses its momentum, ending up as a drama that feels more “okay” than truly memorable. It had potential in its political and palace intrigue setup, but it struggles to keep that same level of engagement throughout its run.

The pacing is one of the main issues. The beginning and early middle episodes are the most engaging parts, but as the story progresses, it starts to feel slower and less interesting. The final episodes in particular don’t carry the same strength as the earlier ones, which makes the ending feel somewhat underwhelming and predictable.

Character development is also quite limited. The protagonist remains largely the same from start to finish, which makes her journey feel flat in terms of growth. Because of that, the emotional impact of her decisions never fully lands. The supporting cast and antagonist are fine and serviceable, with a convincing villain, but none of the characters truly stand out or evolve in a way that feels memorable.

The romance has a promising start, with some decent chemistry and a nice build-up early on, but it gradually loses its spark.

Production-wise, everything is decent but not particularly remarkable. The cinematography is fine, the OST is average, and nothing really stands out as a highlight. The political aspects of the story are handled competently, but they never reach a level that feels truly gripping or impactful.

Overall, Perfect Crown is a drama that starts with potential but slowly loses its strength as it goes on.

Not bad, but not good.

Watch for the characters, not the plot!

First, I will not talk about the recent controversy happening around this drama, since I am not Korean nor do I know about the intricacies of their history.

Secondly, I think the best thing about this drama are the characters, especially the main leads, and their relationship with each other. If you don’t like rom coms, or don’t like “cheesy and tropey” romance in general, then I fear this story isn’t for you.

Overall, I think the actors did a phenomenal job in portraying their characters. Of course, IU and Byeon Woo Seok are the stars of the show, but the secondary cast shouldn’t be ashamed about their performances either! I didn’t expect to like the duo of secretaries as much as I did honestly, and I even wish they had more screen time in the end. Furthermore, the humor was very spotted on and relied more on comedic timing than in cringe scenes, for my immense pleasure!

Like I said before, the characters are shining in this drama, the development of the romance is delightful (in my humble opinion) and the OST is very fitting too. On the other hand, it’s true that the plot is quite weak, even if I feel like they did the best they could. Because honestly, this is a romcom, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else: it isn’t anything revolutionary, and it contains quite a few tropes that we have already seen in other kdramas. But it still works! Especially because Hui Ju and Yi An felt like they were “real” (as real as they could get considering this is a kdrama about a fake marriage between an heiress and a regent in the 21st century). Each grew within a hostile environment, and they had to adapt in response to that: she’s arrogant and a little bitchy, he’s handsome and composed. But very soon, we realize that they have layers that need peeling so we can reach their inner parts. I feel like they both had in equal measures their moments of weaknesses in front of the other, and so they had to learn and to adapt, and they really became the other comfort in the end. I feel like the development of their relationship was quite natural and organic in this way and I really loved it. Of course, there are moments of cheesiness, of longing stares and shy kisses, but the actors did their best to make it all seem less fabricated and more spontaneous.

I also really loved the fact that they were equally in love with each other, I didn't feel like one was putting so much more effort into their relationship than the other. It felt quite mature in this aspect, and I think Hui Ju did a great job protecting and defending Yi An as best as she could. More importantly, I absolutely adored the "quiet" moments between them, when one was comforting the other and vice versa, away from prying eyes and beyond the riches and glamour. To me it seemed like they truly found solace in each other and it was a joy to witness, even more so than all the "grand" gestures they had to show the world to justify their union .

By contrast, I think the secondary characters could have been better developed. In this regard, the Queen mother, and the prime minister, were a little too “cartoonery” for my taste as they were obviously the main antagonists of this drama. But still the actors were great and again I feel like the script is the only one at fault here: taking the time to properly explore their respective motivations and desires would have been great, even if the viewer can still understand the general plot as it is. I don’t want to spoil too much but they really had the materials to become great and unique characters, for very different reasons. Truthfully, I hope the web novel will explore their characters a little bit more to add some needed lore behind their actions.

The overall plot wasn’t extraordinarily thrilling either, even if some scenes were quite tense and charged emotionally: obviously the viewer knows that our main characters aren’t seriously in danger and yet I was still very entertained until the very end, further proof of the actors’ amazing chemistry. I also agree with some people saying that the whole monarchy thing could have been developed a little further, but still I liked the main leads’ choices in the end, it made sense for me and I’m quite happy with the last episode (even though I feel like there are still some loose ends that weren’t explained, or maybe I missed some details). Again, it was maybe a little rushed concerning the main plot line, but it was nonetheless very satisfying regarding the characters and their relationships. So massive bonus point for that!

With that being said, I am very happy to have watched this kdrama despite its flaws. Give it a chance, you could fall in love with it too!

Good but don't get too much hyped, cause we have another potential lost

Should you watch? Yes.
Now let's write what must be told.

I'm gonna give 6 to story, but i must clarify: I can't give a 10 because the final product was almost average / ok. What i feel is that the director probably screwed up with this one.

What we saw in those 12 episodes could EASILY fit into 8 or 10 (if talking about only what we saw in those 12, gonna elaborate more soon). I'm gonna use episodes 11 and 12 as example since i just watched both: they should be put in only one episode, A talks to B, then we have B talking to C not a "A just told me XYZ", but character B literally repeating word by word and then C goes tell D and is just like the chat before.... really man?
BUT i also feel that so many things were just rushed, and a others we just can't get it. And this is why if we had what was cut from us, we would've probably got a solid 12 episodes k-drama.

Does this mean you shouldn't watch? NO, it is a good drama in the end.
The acting is good, and i say this based on all characters. The music is also good. And the plot is actually good. All characters visually fit their positions, the overall design is also good.
- The first episodes are SO GOOD. A perfect foundation is made, the characters are very charismatic. FL and ML have good personalities (the Cold and the Warm, the Hard and the Sweet). The first 2 eps got me there cause they were almost perfect. (9/10)
- Episodes 3 to 6 are good. They are not as good as the first two, but they are good. There is one or other thing that was unnecessary, but it didn't drop much of quality comparing to the first two. (8/10)
- Then we got 7 to 10... i was thinking, ok now we are gonna start moving, right? Wrong, al we got here we already know or watched before. Nothing new besides one thing or other. (7/10)
- Now about episodes 11 and 12... everything that needed to be done happened in 30 mins, and the rest was almost waste of time. I forced myself to put a 1.5x to actually watch it. And when we get to finally see the couples together, we have a 15 min conclusion RUSHED showing almost nothing. (4/10).

When i saw IU and Byeon Woo Seok i thought "ok, those guys can def choose what they wanna do, so this is gonna be peak", but i guess i was wrong. And this is why i feel that the problem is the director. Those two can CHOOSE the projects they are going to act, i am 99% certain they wouldn't choose this "script" as showed in the final product.

Nothing unique other than the worl building

It is frustrating to see same type of rom-com drama over over again , nothing new found . It is like regression manhwa , every single one of them seem same. The wold building was good, It was frustrating to see the MC to be too forgiving . IU's acting didn't feel natural , it felt kind of forced , but it was good . Her acting in when Life gives Tangerine was the best but here it felt like something is missing or character is not going with her. Overall good experience , but that not good to say wow this is the best. FMC was strong in the beginning but wth happened that she started to become so timid , not attacking enough , I thought she and queen mother would have a fight around the crown , whole story involved she was poisoned and sob strory ,mc crying for her , and she woke up tensed for him ,then mc got into fire and she is crying , MC got up , get the crown and abolished the crown . Story could go far and much more exciting , it felt like they finished it hurriedly. Btw if you wanted to show a strong fmc , then show a strong villain too, Inpyeong didn't even have enough screen time , revenge was not satisfying enough

So Expensive, So Sloppy

This was a big budget Disney show with big stars but everything about it was half-assed and sloppy. I finished it which says something because I'll drop shows like a hot rock if I'm not enjoying them but it was something I had on in the background while I did other things. For the amount of money that was spent on this, the lackluster execution is unforgivable. It felt like a gourmet recipe made at a Michelin-starred restaurant where the chef somehow forgot the salt.
--------------

To be nice, I'll start with what I liked:

Gong Seung Yeon absolutely ate. She was beautiful, icy, elegant, disdainful, remorseful, heartbroken, brave and then happy in the end. Not only did she deliver a star-making performance, she was also the best styled person in the drama. Her hanbok were beautiful, she rocked a gorgeous gown in the ball scene and wore what looked like a perfectly tailored Dior suit in the last episode. Oh and I have to bring up her beautiful voice, which was pitched low for maximum effect.

Steve Noh delivered a wonderfully nuanced performance as the prime minister. His micro expressions were so good and on point, bringing the subtlety the ML couldn't. He also looked fine as hell in his Clark Kent fit. And he had a fantastically husky voice that matched GSY's. Too bad the writing for his character was atrocious. He deserved better and I hope he gets more chances to shine.

Lee Yeon and Yoo Soo Bin were great as the secretaries and brought a lot of humor and heart to their roles. I also loved how they styled Lee Yeon in suits and other takes on menswear even though it made her look very not-straight. I was meh on their romance but they were cute together in a best friends kind of way.

Lee Jae Won and Chae Seo An were adorable scene stealers as the brother and sister-in-law

--------------

What I didn't like:

THE WRITING JESU CRISTO THIS WON A CONTEST? The screenwriter kept launching various plot threads but never resolving them. The unanswered questions include:

- Did I-An's brother choose to unalive himself by staying in the burning building on purpose?
- Who started the fire at the little king's birthday celebration?
- Who murdered I-An's mother?
- Who tampered with Hui Ju's brakes?
- Who killed the mechanic that tampered with Hui Ju's brakes?
- Who was the spy that Hui Ju's father placed in the palace?
- How did their marriage contract leak?
- What happened to the prime minister in the end?
- etc. etc.

The writing for the prime minister, the main villain, was atrocious. He was a career politician at the highest level yet we're supposed to believe that he was secretly in love with Hui Ju but never confessed (why?) and then turns into an attempted murderer just because she marries the prince.

The leads didn't have chemistry. Their scenes together felt like wet paper. Byeon Woo Seok had much more chemistry in his scenes with Gong Seung Yeon which made me see the lost opportunity to at least have an exciting lead couple in this drama.

The styling for IU was atrocious. She had obvious press-on nails in a color that can best be described as three day old corpse. And the fit on her clothes was completely off. More than once she had on a jacket that was too tight and pulled across the chest (on IU! She's tiny!). A commenter who sews pointed out that her knits looked like they were made from synthetic fibers and they were stretched out at the collar. Plus the colors and cuts were unsophisticated for a character who's supposed to be a fashionista influencer.

Byeon Woo Seok was terribly miscast in this. I really enjoyed him in Lovely Runner but he just can't pull off icy tsundere. At the end of the drama he morphs into a househusband who's a simp and suddenly his acting came alive. He needs to play to his strengths in the future.

Overall, this drama felt like a big cash grab where once they nailed down the concept and cast, they just didn't GAF about the execution. Do not recommend.
