Mature audiences

Dark, manipulative, toxic behaviour from a well drawn character, Fan Xiao, who is frighteningly void of empathy. His target, You Shu Lang, a sweet gay man, in a simple, caring relationship. What ensues is an edge of the seat gripping story. Every reveal more disturbing and I, as the audience, was in fear for our sweet Shu Lang character. He is no soft, spineless pushover and his struggles as a child have imbued his character with compassion and strength; the white Yin to Xiao's Yang darkness.

The intensity of their relationship is breathtaking and obsessive. Both men have need of some component of their partnering even though Shu Lang realises earlier both start to recognise the unbalanced nature of their passion and the blurring of healthy boundaries that are destroying them both.

The actors are mesmerising and although Xiao has the strongest role the quiet strength and dignity of Shu Lang balances out some of the extremes.

I want to see more tales like this that do not rely solely on the BL nature of a relationship. Plot, intrigue, character development and redemption make this an excellent drama. The lighting, camera angles, settings etc etc are polished and help to portray the story brilliantly.

So take a deep breath of your black, slimline cigarette you are in for a bumpy ride.

The king of all WTFs

This series kept me hooked 'till the end, I couldn't help myself enduring 'till the end. I just couldn't drop this title but honestly I don't know why.
There's no reason for these two to be together, or at least there is no reason for You Shu Lang to fall in love with Fan Xiao.
The only thing that makes a little sense is all Fan Xiao's scheming because he's foundamentally troubled, mischevious, obsessed...insane.
Maybe the whole story might be reduced in two torn men meeting each other and finding solace to one' suffering in the other one's sorrow.
If found this drama extremely violent, but physically and psychologically.
Still I couldn't drop it...

Fantastic start, unenjoyable finish

It started off so good. I was eating it up. It was toxic but it was supposed to be, great I love to see it that’s fine. I loved the first half or so. Fan Xiao was toxic and manipulative and it made the show really fun to watch, as awful as that sounds, it was fun seeing him worm his way in between Shu Lang and his boyfriend. I even loved when Fan Xiao and Shu Lang got together...at first.

Where the show really started to lose me is when Fan Xiao went from toxic to straight up abusive and a r*pist. I'll watch a toxic relationship all day long, but the second r*pe or assault comes in is where it's enjoyable anymore. I knew I was signing up for toxicity but not abuse so it very much threw me off. There were multiple scenes where Shu Lang clearly didn't want Fan Xiao and was forced to sleep with him or kiss him, and the show just kept throwing in scenes where Fan Xiao “realizes” what he’s doing is wrong and “apologizes” but the way they do it is like they want us as the audience to actually forgive him. Like girl what?? He literally just assaulted Shu Lang. Or they would have scenes where the show is like “No guy's Shu Lang stays because wants to” like GIRL NO HE DOES NOT. Why did we take this turn?? I hate it. Why does toxicity always have to mean SA? It was plenty entertaining and toxic enough before all that.

I hated that they ended up together too. I was really hoping this show would be different and would have it so Shu Lang actually moves on and goes on with his life happily, which he does, and then they ruined it in the last 10 minutes or so but putting them back together.

Like I said, I loved the first half maybe even a bit more of this show. The main two as well as Shu Lang's boyfriend were enjoyable to watch, and I really found the story entertaining. Once they made Fan Xiao turns so possessive that he was abusive is where I really didn't like his character anymore.

As for things I liked
-I loved the chemistry between the main two actors. They did a great job as well as the rest of the cast, but the mc's really stood out to me
-The story was never boring, even when I didn't like where it went, at least it wasn't boring.
-I LOVED seeing Fan Xiao go absolutely broke at the hand of Shu Lang. He deserved it.
-I love that Shu Lang adopted Tian Tian! So cute!
-The first half of the show is what I want when it comes to toxic relationships to watch! It makes it so fun to see!
-I really liked the finale. Even though I didn't want them to end up together and wasn't happy about that, I think the finale was really good.
-The kisses and spicey scenes were pretty good

Overall, I just don't know how to feel about it because I went from being so excited for the next episode to dreading the next one.

Psychological Drama not Romance

I will try my best to leave this review spoiler free but provide clear honest information about this drama. What I write today is different than my usual reviews. I am actually advising those who read this that To My Shore should come with trigger warnings but does not.

This was a very well-made drama. Writing was tight. Characterizations insanely good. Side characters were interesting, but none were sympathetic. Music better than average. If you like to watch someone mentally destroy himself and others, this is the drama for you.

As someone who has experienced forms of psychological abuse by a romantic partner, I would be remiss if I agreed with the tag that this was a romance. It was mental and emotional abuse.

The last 15 minutes of episode 15 was a romance…..the rest….not so much.

The remaining 99.5% of this show is all about how Fan Xiao seeks to draw You Shu Lang into his control. Yes, his original intentions were to break his heart and send him on his merry way.

What proceeds is Fan Xiao’s untreated psychological trauma creating a very unhealthy obsessive-compulsive situation. By episode 12, You Shu Lang realizes himself there is no escape from Fan Xiao’s destructive behavior unless one of them dies (no neither of them die).

I’ll be honest, the abusive relationship was so uncomfortable and triggering, I had to forward over some parts.

Fan Xiao was portrayed by Yun Qi and if he isn’t already clinically insane, he did a masterful job showing what mental illness looks like. According to this website, he is only 23 years old and has done little to no work before this. If you want to see how trauma and too much money can mess you up, watch To My Shore just for his characterization.

Hao Yi Ran played You Shu Lang, the much-tortured main character. He also did a fantastic job. I read another reviewer who had said You Shu Lang worked very hard to make himself small so no one would notice him. That description fits him nicely. You Shu Lang was not weak by any stretch of the imagination. He was a survivalist at heart. No money and no power means go small for survival.

I hated every other character that graced the screen in this show, not a single one had any redeeming qualities, nor were they fun in their “bad” behavior. Only the two leads were marginally sympathetic.

Was this a masterpiece? I don’t know. I hate psychological dramas because of my own past. Why did I keep watching? The two leads were that good in drawing me into their story.

Will I rewatch this?

Only the last 15 minutes.

Should you watch this?

Only if you are NOT triggered by mental and verbal abuse.

Darker than my future but massively underrated.

The people comparing (&bashing) this to RL need to touch some grass or step out in the sun bcoz this show is 10 times better. Atleast with this one they know the ML is toxic & does not present it as comedy. He is a downright evil bitch. The good thing is, he knows that, we know that & the makers know that & have set the tone of the series accordingly. This is not put forth as a romcom & I'm immensely grateful. If you still romanticize him, then there is something seriously wrong with you. FX is a red flag done right, charming but manipulative. Enough past trauma to explain(but not excuse) why he is the way he is. Above all, there is acknowledgement that he is a bad person.

And YSL as a character is so emotionally mature and self assured. He is extremely kind but does not let a slight against him slide easily. A breath of fresh air, coz here is finally a grown ass man that acts like an adult.

They have excellent chemistry. The NC scenes are fire, but the casual intimacy is what elevates the authenticity of the relationship. It just adds to the feeling of butterflies.

The plot & script is the major strong suit. It's about 98% similar to the novel & it helps. some things don't make sense, like literally everyone being in love with YSL (i get it but realistically). The acting is good, but some times suffers. Everything on the technical side, from lighting to cinematography, to costumes is excellent. Very good production value. The make up is actually atrocious in some scenes (china needs to stop obsessing over looking like sheets of paper). Overall as a show, it's very good.

I Was Hooked From Episode One… Until the Finale

I’m not even going to pretend — I like Fan Xiao. He’s complicated, emotionally restrained, and clearly carrying a lot of internal conflict, which is exactly why he’s so compelling to watch. The early part of To My Shore does an amazing job of making you feel his quiet pain and understand why he acts the way he does. That intensity is a huge reason the beginning of the series works so well. That said… liking him doesn’t mean ignoring the red flags. Fan Xiao avoids confrontation, struggles with honest communication, and tends to take emotional control of situations without realizing how much damage it causes. His “silent endurance” often leaves other characters confused or hurt, even if his intentions aren’t malicious. It’s frustrating because you can see he cares, he just doesn’t know how to express it in a healthy way. What really hurts is the ending. As someone who actually likes Fan Xiao, I wanted the show to go deeper with him. I wanted growth, accountability, or at least a proper emotional reckoning. Instead, the finale feels rushed and flat, glossing over his flaws instead of resolving them. It almost feels like the drama was afraid to fully challenge him, which does his character a disservice. Overall, To My Shore had such a strong, emotionally intense start and a character like Fan Xiao who could’ve been unforgettable. I still like him , probably always will but the weak ending left me feeling like we were robbed of the character development and payoff he deserved.

Chemistry

The first time I saw *Summary*, I was immediately intrigued. Later, I saw that somebody had translated a few chapters of the novel, so I started reading it before the series started airing. I was immediately looking forward to watching the series.

When the first two episodes aired, I was impressed by the acting. Yun Qi and Yi Ran have fantastic chemistry. They really bring the characters Fan Xiao and You Shu Lang to life. You immediately feel the tension between the two characters.

The story has a quiet tension that makes it hard to stop watching.

The cinematography is fantastic. Every scene perfectly recorded and the colors are charming to the eyes.

This one of best BL series that i watched in 2025.

badly written story about toxic relationship and how you are supposed to like it.

There are two team digging ... one for unlikeliness and one for toxic relation but both of them might be working for that drama.
That's one more story of toxic guy, unhealthy relationship and ... please where is the police to put all that to an end ?
But still we are supposed to think the very toxic guy is some kind of prince charming just slightly possessive ... who said plain on crazy ?

And what with the family dramas popping up here and there so we are supposed to feel pity or so they can gather a kid for the final scene.

Desesperately stupid.

a painful love story.

The series was fantastic in every aspect. Sometimes I laughed, sometimes I got angry, sometimes my eyes welled up, sometimes I was filled with excitement. While watching the series, I felt like I was living it; all these emotions were so intense.

The actors conveyed their emotions so beautifully; I understood them just by looking into their eyes. My heart ached when YiRan cried; I truly admired her. And YunQi was amazing, even though it was his first experience.

TMS is now at the top of my series list, the best production in the BL category according to my taste. The subject matter was very heavy, very long. The team handled the series very well, there wasn't a single part that bothered me.

I don't want to feel like saying goodbye to them, thankfully a special episode is coming. I'm very happy about that. I will always support them.

I know I am in the super minority with this one BUT.....

I really did not like this one. I know this show is all the rage, and I can totally see why. The acting was good, the characters were toxic but interesting, the relationship dynamics were red flagged throughout, but for some reason, it just did not work for me. I found most episodes to be quite boring and repetitive, and the NC scenes or the physical chemistry did not have the sparks I am always looking for.
Maybe this was just not for me, but I really did not enjoy it. Probably just me though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The Best BL ever

This BL series is the Best BL drama so far. It’s number# 1.

Everything was a perfection— script, performance, producers, directors… top notch. No other BL series moved me that much as this one. I cried, cheered, felt sad, angry, happy …at some point didn’t feel like I was watching a movie but like I was part of it…

Now I’m obsessed with YunQi and Yiran LOVE story. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
