In 1885, the first nursing school in Japan was established, followed by other nursing schools across the country. As if invited by fate, Ichinose Rin and Oya Naomi enroll in one of these schools. Rin becomes a single mother at a young age due to a series of misfortunes. Naomi, abandoned by her parents at birth, is raised in the care of a church. The other classmates who gather at the school each have their own complicated circumstances. Together, they strive to study nursing, a field still unfamiliar in Japan at the time. After graduating from the training school, the two debut as trainee nurses at the same university hospital. They spend their days struggling to establish nursing as a recognized profession, one still misunderstood by society. However, Rin is soon dismissed from her job, while Naomi, who dreams of studying in the United States, is involved in an unexpected event just before her departure. Eventually, epidemics such as cholera and dysentery begin to spread across the country. Though once separated, the two reunite and join forces to confront the deadly threat of the plague.
