Cross the Yangtze River

For Nanjing, Jiangsu, the Yangtze River flows through the city, connecting the natural and cultural landscapes of "Jiangxi" (west of the Yangtze) and "Jiangdong" (east of the Yangtze) for millions of years. As early as the Qing Dynasty, Nanjing had already established two major transportation hubs: Pukou Wharf and Zhongshan Wharf. People on both banks were able to brush shoulders and blend together. Through the rise and fall of tides, Nanjing's century-old ferry system has experienced prosperity, decline, suspension, and reconstruction. Today, Pukou Wharf and Zhongshan Wharf have regained their social and cultural value as part of the Yangtze River ferry system. The ferry is not just a means of transportation, but also a vessel of modern Nanjing's history. The once-bustling Nanjing West Station next to Pukou Wharf has long ceased operation, and the surrounding area has been demolished and rebuilt into a tourism and cultural site. The wharf has shifted from a transportation function to tourism development. With economic growth, the differences between Jiangdong and Jiangxi seem to be shrinking, yet quietly enlarging in other corners.
