The Ghost of a Good Premise: Why Spooky in Love Loses Its Way

If the trailers sold you a full-on urban fantasy akin to Hotel Del Luna, or Sell Your Haunted House, prepare for some serious bait-and-switch. Spooky in Love opens with a hook that promises a charming blend of spectral shenanigans and high-stakes romance, but the supernatural vibe vanishes astonishingly fast.

The story follows Yeo-ri, an eccentric heiress who uses her connection to the spiritual realm to do good, alongside Kang-wook, a brave, straight-laced prosecutor. Park Eun-bin gives it her absolute all, projecting a natural, stylish elegance reminiscent of IU in Hotel Del Luna, just with a slightly more realistic touch. Yet, even her captivating performance cannot save the show from its core problem: the supernatural elements lose steam long before the actual drama does.

Despite marketing itself as a paranormal romance, the ghost-centric premise disappears almost completely after the first few episodes. Rather than leaning into its unique premise, the plot quickly strays into tired corporate intrigue and predictable family drama.

The writing relies far too heavily on convenient script mechanics instead of genuine character choices, making emotional shifts, especially in the main love story, feel forced and unconvincing. To make matters worse, the addition of a tedious, boring second-male-lead trope only drags the pacing down further.

Spooky in Love remains a sweet, harmless watch, but it ultimately squanders the very feature that made it stand out, trading genre bending potential for safe, repetitive clichés.

The Good: Park Eun-bin's performance, great wardrobe, promising initial setup.

The Bad: Misleading marketing, abandoned supernatural plot, contrived romance, boring love triangle.

Cuando los fantasmas terminan siendo lo de menos

Spooky in Love es uno de esos dramas que llaman la atención desde el principio porque mezclan géneros que, en teoría, podrían no funcionar juntos: romance, comedia, fantasmas, misterio y casos criminales. Y, para mi sorpresa, creo que la combinación funciona bastante bien.

La historia sigue a Cheon Yeo-ri, una heredera y dueña de un hotel que tiene la capacidad de ver fantasmas. Lejos de ser un “don”, para ella es prácticamente una maldición, porque los espíritus de personas que murieron injustamente aparecen constantemente en su vida. Todo cambia cuando conoce a Ma Gang-uk, un fiscal que investiga casos de asesinato sin resolver.

Lo que me gustó de la historia es que los fantasmas no están ahí únicamente para provocar sustos. Muchas de sus apariciones están relacionadas con historias de personas que quedaron sin justicia, así que el elemento sobrenatural termina conectado con el misterio y con la propia personalidad de los protagonistas.

Me hubiese gustado que siguiera mostrando como ambos resolvían más casos de los fantasmas, aunque claro sería raro porque una heredera de un hotel porque tendría que andar metida en esas cosas y al parecer al único que le parecía sospechoso que ella estuviera y llamara a la policia en todos esos casos era al protagonista a un inicio de apenas estarse conociendo.

Yeo-ri fue, sin duda, uno de mis personajes favoritos. Me gustó que detrás de su apariencia de mujer rica y aparentemente intocable hubiera una persona bastante solitaria. Su capacidad de ver fantasmas la ha obligado a mantenerse alejada de los demás, y eso hace que su relación con Gang-uk tenga un significado especial.

Gang-uk también me gustó mucho. Es el típico personaje que parece tenerlo todo bajo control: inteligente, decidido y con un fuerte sentido de la justicia. Y no solo eso sino también la empatía que mostraba y que no ocultaba sus sentimientos, si quería llorar lloraba.

Ahora hablando de la parejita, la química entre ambos fue uno de los puntos fuertes del drama. Hay momentos muy divertidos, otros bastante tiernos, pero también pienso que la química entre ambos fue muy desaprovechada especialmente en el final.

También disfruté mucho el equilibrio entre comedia y misterio. El drama puede pasar de una escena bastante oscura a otra completamente absurda o romántica sin perder del todo su identidad.

Creo que algunos casos secundarios pudieron desarrollarse mejor y hubo momentos en los que la historia parecía tener demasiadas cosas que contar al mismo tiempo. También entiendo las críticas de quienes sintieron que algunas situaciones entre los protagonistas eran un poco forzadas.

Pero personalmente, creo que el drama gana mucho gracias a sus personajes y a la forma en que combina sus diferentes elementos.

¿La recomiendo? Sí. Especialmente si te gustan los dramas que mezclan romance con fantasía y misterio, pero no quieres algo demasiado oscuro.

Eso sí, no esperes un terror que te haga dormir con la luz encendida. 😂 Aquí los verdaderos monstruos, muchas veces, son los secretos, las injusticias y las personas que los protagonistas tienen que enfrentar.

Spooky argument

STORY – Starts great and end miserably. Somewhere un the middle of the drama, I lost the plot, and it was dull and boring.
ACTING – It was good, but I felt some strange feelings in the last 2 or 3 episodes, something was different…
MUSIC – it was good for the show, and it stayed in my mind.
REWATCH – not really. And I don’t think that there will be more than a couple of scenes deserving reviewing.
OVERALL – I lost interest going to the end of the drama. I don’t regret watching it, but I wished it was more consistent and well written…

A charming drama that lost its spooky spark

Spooky in Love opens as a fun supernatural story with a strong ghostly twist that gives the early episodes a fresh, engaging feel. The leads, Park Eun Bin and Yang Se Jong, bring a lot of charm and make the story easy to follow.

I also really enjoyed Lee Chang Hoon and Kim Min Ho — their dynamic added a light, playful energy that balanced the darker elements nicely. Let's not forget Ong Seong Wu: He was a great addition; even though his role became clear early on, watching his storyline unfold was still satisfying.

The acting and chemistry were great, and that’s honestly what kept me watching until the end.

Unfortunately, the ghost theme — the part that initially drew me in — fades away midway through the drama. I would’ve loved to see that aspect explored more, especially since it gave the show its unique identity at the start.

Even with that shift, it remains a light, easy, and overall enjoyable watch. It just turns into a different kind of drama than I expected.

Great Start, ain't regret watching but not that satisfied ending.

Okay, I started watching it because of park eun bin and yang se jeong .Then she's a great actress.That's why. and he dont do so many shows but i loved his past shows which he did thats why. Spooky in love has a greak starting, i liked the plots too, but if you are looking for a great thriller kinda feeling this is not a go to show, this a fun watch, i waited for episodes to come out, watched but honestly it was all good till 8 or 9 episodes in last 3 episodes all I was like wth , its a good show if you wanna have a good watch but it isn't a choice if you wanna watch something that just satisfy you, I am lil disappointed by the makers about how they covered it up in the later episodes, it could have been a better show, but nevertheless, i ain't regret watching it but still it didnt ended well.

Starts strong, ends weak

This story begins well. The two leads meet and the female lead accidentally leaves the male lead seeing ghosts. this is something she has been doing for years since she almost died in a boating accident that killed the man she loved. The Part where the male lead is seeing ghosts and they are working together to solve their deaths is fun. The ML is scared and ill at ease in a fun way. Eventually he comes to see that if it’s this hard for him with support it must have been terribly hard for her with no one to tell or consult.

The biggest problem is that the ghost aspects disappear by halfway through. The story focuses much more on things going on with the second male lead who realizes he has no chance with Yeo-ri and starts doing nefarious company rival stuff.
The second half of the show is fairly boring aside from fun interactions with and about secondary characters. Sometimes I find 16 to 22 episode series a bit long. in this case more ghosts through out and a longer lead in to the resolution might have helped.

same bs as always

it started well. it was fun, until it stopped. theres so much that i wanna talk about. the relationship wasnt that bad but also not that good, it was okay. i get a lot of things that happened to them because it looked natural (for me) like, the way they fell in love. it was fun at the beginning bc of the way gangwook and yeori kept bumping on each other, but the main plot dissapeared while you kept watching, becoming just family drama and i hated her aunt and her cousins💀 and it was just so stupid the reason gangwook's grandma needed them to break up with each other, it was literally just the drama bc it seemed that it didnt actually matter somehow idk

dont even get me started with the truck of doom, im so fucking tired with it and made me angry how it hit yeori, she couldve died lmao it hit her quite hard but yeah, it was impossible for her to die.

also, when seungjae died i didnt understand why yeori had the weapon (the tube ?) when gangwook and the police found her. idk if it was just me, but i think it was pretty obvious that she didnt do it (it didnt matter to the story, and didnt also care apparently) but idk if the script writers wanted it to seem like it was her ? even tho seungjae clearly wanted to blackmail minhwan and yeori didnt even have any reason to kill him "theorically" (bc yeah, she didnt know until she broke into seungjae's house)

(i appreciate yeori's grandma always supported her, and she knew her family was insane and protected yeori always, never meddled into yeori and gangwook's rs)

I feel good romcom/mystery/ghost story/corporate intrigue

A feel good mystery/ ghost story/ romcom/ cheabol corporate intrigue. I think that’s all the genres covered. I think if this had 16 episodes we would have seen more ghosts, But the current industry standard is 12 and you could feel it with the mystery storyline. I think they would’ve added more ghost stories otherwise .As a romcom, it was really well done and fleshed out. the corporate intrigue was not over blown or filler, but stayed on the plot points. while there was a good bit of accidents, they served the overall themes and we’re not plot advancements. I really enjoy these actors, a real standout crowd. I looked forward to every episode each week.

I am attached to this drama from the beginning until the end with no complaints

I relate to it too .., I am someone who suffers from OCD sometimes and the treatment mechanism is that you ignore the thoughts and don’t give a reaction to it
this is the same one when Ma gwang was dealing with the ghost appearing in his life

so I hoped they focused much on that but still wouldn’t change anything

the comedy and the acting was something else.., I was laughing every episode

I just hoped for more episodes

Underwhelming

I like dramas with ghosts, particularly ones with 'good' ghosts. This show wasn't that. It barely adheres to its core premise. It's more of a family/corporate drama than a supernatural crime rom com. That's my one issue with it (perhaps the biggest). The first sign that this wasn't going to focus on the 'Spooky' is the fact that the ghosts hardly spoke. At first, I thought it was a cool and unique creative decision, but I guess it was just an indicator of the writer's priorities.

Now I won't dwell on the cliches. Common tropes are not bad if the story is well written, plausible and consistent. The show suffers from a weak script. Character motivations and actions sometimes felt out of place and unearned, things happening to quickly (like the romance). I think the show tried to do so much and failed. Some of the storylines could have been done away with and instead spent on building a convincing romance (and crime) plot.

Now I did like some aspects of it, the friendship between the ML and his two colleagues for one. I typically find most romcom friendships (moreso on the ML) unconvincing, in that the non-leads seem to put all the effort in while the ML just exists to benefit from it without reciprocation, but I didn't feel much of it with this drama. I guess that's a plus.

I didn't hate watching this, but it's a drama I'll probably not recall much of in a few months. Nothing in it standouts, it's just average, be it the OST, the story, characters, acting.

such a sweet story

honestly, for such a dark premise, it really balanced out well with the main characters love story being so sweet. there wasn’t really that back and forth of feeling. ML did such a great job with golden retriever energy and he was precious. FL did such a great job being a softie at heart but keeping people at a distance behind walls (gloves). and they both did excellent at making us feel their emotions. even the FL didn’t really cry but you could FEEL her distress and sadness. the ML crying absolutely broke my heart. but their love was so sweet and she deserved someone who would cherish her despite the ghosts. and the ghosts even got to thank her which made me absolutely bawl.
