Love Alert — A Good Novel That Deserved a Better Adaptation
I really wanted to love Love Alert. The original novel by Nottakorn had all the ingredients for a mature romance: flawed characters, emotional consequences, and relationships that weren't simply black or white. Unfortunately, somewhere between the novel and the screen, much of that emotional depth disappeared. The biggest problem isn't the story itself. In fact, I actually like the premise. Jimmy is introduced as a playboy who accidentally falls for someone he never expected, and the love triangle gradually becomes a story about emotional growth rather than simple attraction. On paper, it's much more interesting than your average university BL. The problem is the execution.
One of the first things that bothered me was the writing. Bhumjai's screenplay constantly feels afraid of letting the drama breathe. Emotional scenes are interrupted by unnecessary melodrama, while important conversations are rushed. Instead of building tension naturally, the script often relies on Toh crying over and over again to remind us that he's suffering.
And that's where I completely disconnect from the story.
Toh spends what feels like half the series crying. Not because crying is unrealistic—everyone cries—but because it becomes his defining personality trait. It almost feels like the writer believes gay men should constantly be emotionally fragile, something that I rarely see in Thai dramas with heterosexual couples. The result is a character who becomes frustrating rather than sympathetic.
Jimmy isn't much better. James Hayward Prescott certainly has the charisma to play a charming flirt, but the character keeps making decisions that make very little sense. His emotional journey never feels earned because the script constantly changes direction instead of allowing him to mature naturally. Even reviewers who generally enjoyed the series pointed out how frustrating and inconsistent Jimmy could be.
The chemistry between James Hayward Prescott and Kad Ploysupa is another missed opportunity. I wasn't convinced by them in Bad Guy My Boss, and unfortunately I wasn't convinced here either. It's not that they dislike each other or can't act. It's simply that I never believed they were deeply in love. They look like two actors trying to portray a romance instead of two people who genuinely can't imagine life without each other.
Ironically, James often dominates the screen while Kad remains emotionally passive. Whenever the drama asks me to believe Toh is Jimmy's emotional anchor, I struggle because Jimmy feels like the one carrying every scene. The balance between the two characters never really works.
David Matthew Roberts deserves a small mention because, despite being one of the less experienced actors, I actually saw potential in him. His performance isn't perfect, but there are moments where he feels more natural than some of the more experienced members of the cast. Given stronger material, I think he could become a very interesting actor to watch.
The direction by Bum Pariyakon Chayaninparamet also left me disappointed. This was her first BL series, and unfortunately it shows. There are scenes that should feel intimate but instead come across as staged. Emotional pacing is inconsistent, and the explicit moments often feel inserted because the genre expects them rather than because the story needs them. Instead of strengthening the relationship, they sometimes expose how little emotional intimacy actually exists between the leads.
What frustrates me most is that none of this is really Nottakorn's fault. Looking at his previous works, he clearly understands how to write engaging BL stories with memorable couples. The source material already contained the emotional foundation needed for a compelling adaptation. It simply wasn't translated successfully to the screen.
Final Thought
Love Alert had everything it needed to become a memorable BL: a solid novel, an interesting premise, and a cast with genuine potential. But weak screenwriting, uneven direction, and a romance that never fully convinced me prevented it from reaching that potential. More than anything, it left me frustrated because I could constantly see glimpses of the much better story hidden underneath the adaptation.

Love Alert (2026) – Final
Did Jimmy really change?Episode 10 finally brings Jimmy and To back to each other — but what makes this finale satisfying is not just the reunion. It’s the journey toward honesty.
Jimmy, once careless and flirtatious, is forced to confront his own immaturity. When he loses To, he loses more than a boyfriend — he loses the version of himself that was finally learning to love sincerely. Watching him struggle, drink, regret, and ultimately confess his true feelings gives emotional weight to what could have been a simple romantic ending.
What I appreciated most was the unexpected role of the exes. Instead of becoming obstacles, they act almost like guardians of the relationship. Ran and Fuse choosing maturity over jealousy was refreshing, especially in a genre that often leans toward unnecessary drama.
The dynamic between Jimmy and To remains charming: the tall, emotionally needy Jimmy leaning into To’s quiet strength, while To, despite being smaller, carries a surprising emotional maturity. Their balance works because neither truly dominates the other.
Is Jimmy completely transformed? Perhaps not entirely — but he is honest now. And sometimes, honesty is enough.
A soft, warm finale that leaves you smiling.

This love story feels extremely light—so light that it becomes boring rather than engaging. It follows a very common and predictable formula: a player who pretends to love, and another boy who knows the truth but still chooses to fall for him anyway. Instead of appearing innocent, this character comes across as frustrating and unrealistic. He is fully aware of the lies, yet he walks straight into heartbreak. That doesn’t feel like innocence—it feels like poor character writing. One of the most distracting elements is Jimmy’s fashion style. His clothes look outdated and old-fashioned, which makes it hard to appreciate his charm. His appearance and personality could have been more appealing if the styling reflected a modern setting. The wardrobe choice weakens the character instead of strengthening him.
Another major issue is the emotional inconsistency. The story shows how heartbreak affects him, but then he enters a relationship with someone else—someone who genuinely loves him, like the doctor—only to hurt him as well. Using another person to heal from past pain is selfish, and it makes the main character difficult to sympathize with. Instead of growth, he repeats the same cycle of emotional damage.
The acting itself is acceptable, but the weak storyline doesn’t give the actors much opportunity to show depth. The emotional scenes lack intensity because the writing doesn’t build strong emotional stakes. Everything feels surface-level, and nothing leaves a lasting impact.
Overall The characters feel inconsistent, the romance feels forced, and the plot is too predictable. Instead of being a touching love story, it becomes frustrating to watch. It is not terrible, but it is definitely disappointing and forgettable.

SERIE_SIN_AMOR_PROPIO
Was this review helpful to you?
8/10 Two-and a Half Couples
I always found it irritating when people wrote "my honest review" in the past. Before I knew BL series, lol. I thought, who would write a dishonest review? Well, now 1 know. I have seen many 10s and 1s for series who clearly didn't deserve it.Love Alert was, I saw, not really well received, and I can understand why. Still, the question for me as reviewer has two be twofold: what did the creators aim for, and was I entertained? On a very basic level I have to answer to both: yes.
As to the details, it was a decent enough story. A red flag character breaks the heart of a green flag guy, with a surrounding cast. Now as a gay man I testify, people like Jimmy just exist - and I assume among straight people just as well. But then there were two important messages: first, we cannot command whom to love. That too I have seen, mostly ending bad. I have an ex who always fell in love with guys treating him bad with no happy ends. But is that life as it always is, and can stories not give us hope? Hope that bad people can change? And in grim times such as these, at least for my part it is a hope I do not wish to let go, call me naive. I never was in the shoes of these two, but I want to believe that a change can happen, and through what if not love? Jimmy did get his good share of suffering, and as the saying goes, mercy is given unearned, for if we have to earn it, it is not forgivance. And despite it all, my heart is not yet so hardend. As such I did overall enjoy the plot. For it gives me hope.
The acting was alright, it wasn't top acting or top looking actors, 1 am honest with that, though I think the bad guy turned good was good looking. Call the question of looks shallow, but in love stories made film I think that does matter. The changes of the behavior from all six people involved was interesting to see, and just because one was a red flag, I don't think it deserves to be hated as series, especially since l am usually relatively thin skinned to watch suffering, I did not feel it was so over the top. The kissing was a bit lacking, but then it often is, so I did not want to set the bar too high just for that. The NC was nice, not too much to be bored (I AM LOOKING AT YOU PEACH LOVER!), and sensitive enough to be nice. Each character was displayed with a clearly distinct character and a decent enough character development. Just from a gut feeling I had a good time with it, and ending with "Two- and a Half Couples" I felt well enough at the ending.
As such I give it
7.5/10 better than expected.
