Through an introduction from the editor-in-chief of the magazine Travel and History, for which Asami Mitsuhiko regularly writes, Koshikawa Harue makes a special trip from Sapporo to visit Mitsuhiko. Harue is worried that her high school best friend, Tachibana Hideyo, may be being deceived by a man named Shirai. Feeling responsible, Harue explains that she had previously asked a private investigator named Toda to look into Shirai’s background, but Toda subsequently went missing. Mitsuhiko travels to Sapporo with his mother, Asami Yukie, and immediately begins asking questions at the hotel where Toda last stayed.
