Thirty-four years ago, a man named Nomoto Sueharu was found dead in Okoshino no Mori, crushed beneath a fallen torii gate. Beside his body lay a bronze hitokatashiro—a ritual effigy traditionally used as a human substitute in Shinto rites and as a symbol of hatred or curses. This led to rumors that the death was the result of a curse brought on by grave robbing. However, his wife Nomoto Keiko vehemently insisted that he had been murdered. Soon after, Keiko herself was discovered dead under mysterious circumstances, with a sheet of Japanese paper placed beside her bearing the single character “怨” (resentment), written in violent brushstrokes. Years later, in the present day, reporter Asami Mitsuhiko is asked by his old college friend Shirai Sadao to cover the theater troupe Shirai runs, the Tokyo Shanghai Boys. Their latest production is titled “The Funeral Procession of the Saio”, set in Tsuchiyama, Shiga Prefecture, a place once traversed by imperial princesses sent from the capital to serve at Ise Grand Shrine. The play is themed around the Saio Procession. (Source: Japanese = TBS || Translation = kisskh) Edit Translation
