Reporter Asami Mitsuhiko travels to Hokkaido for the travel magazine Tabi to Rekishi, researching the history of the Kitamaebune trading ships. While visiting the Hokkai Yoshu distillery in Yoichi, he notices Mitsuidokoro Sonoko, who works there as a guide and whom he had met six months earlier. As Mitsuhiko prepares to speak to her, Yamashina Saburo, a reporter from the Hokuriku Chuo Shimbun, intervenes. Yamashina explains that Sonoko’s father, Mitsuidokoro Takeshi, left home to raise money for his daughter’s university tuition and was found dead two days later in Hashidate, Ishikawa Prefecture—a place with no apparent connection to him. With no clear motive, the police investigation has stalled. Guided by Takeshi’s long-held promise to his wife Setsuyo that he would “one day become a ship owner,” and by an old hikifuda (advertising flyer) wrapped around a treasured clay doll, Mitsuhiko accompanies Sonoko to Hashidate. Once a thriving port during the late Edo to early Meiji period, Hashidate prospered as a Kitamaebune port, and the hikifuda turns out to have belonged to one such ship owner.
