Asami Mitsuhiko, a travel reporter, visited Tsukigata Village in Echigo Province (present-day Tsukigata area, Niigata City), the birthplace of the Kakubei Lion Dance, to report on its origins. There, he unexpectedly met his university classmate, Urushibara Hiroshi. When Asami asked why Hiroshi, whose family home was in Numazu, Shizuoka, was in Niigata, Hiroshi replied that he was doing some research. Before departing, he said to Asami, “If anything happens to me, please take care of my mother and sister,” and then he never returned. A few days later, Hiroshi’s sister, Urushibara Hajimeko, visited the Asami household. Although happy to see her again, Asami quickly learned that Hiroshi had died by suicide. Hajimeko, dissatisfied with the police’s conclusion, explained that she had come to Tokyo to see Asami in accordance with her brother’s instructions: “If anything happens, ask Asami.” Asami immediately set off for Numazu with Hajimeko.
