K-Drama
OSU!
Yandoku! is certainly quite a refreshing take on the medical drama genre, combining surgical medicine with the rebellious spirit of a former delinquent-turned-neurosurgeon.Yes, yet again, it's another medical drama I chose to watch and immediately fell in love with. Never getting tired of a good hospital storyline when it's done just about right.
Kanna Hashimoto (Dr. Tagami) is an absolute blast as the lead. It's so fun to watch her switch from intimidating hospital higher-ups with delinquent slang to being an actual doctor when handling patients. The supporting cast plays off her chaotic presence brilliantly. Her clashes with Dr. Otomo and the guest surgeons/doctors (which all had unique quirks) made me laugh more than I should. Beyond that of course, the story really hooks you once it digs into her history with her mentor, Dr. Nakata.
That said, it isn't without flaws. Because it leans heavily into comedy and episodic patient-of-the-week cases, some of the medical scenarios require a bit of suspension of disbelief, especially if you pay close attention to actual hospital protocols and surgical realism. The overarching hospital politics can also feel a little cliche or pandering at times. It's kind of a predictable trope in most cases where power-hungry characters exist in a show or movie.
But nevertheless, Yandoku! knows exactly what it wants to be: a heartfelt, high-energy medical drama that reminds you why patient care should always come first. It's fun, surprisingly touching when it counts, and easily very enjoyable!
