Not worth it despite the huge rating. Disappointed.

I don't know why this has so much high rating. I started watching this because it had such high rating. And I am disappointed. The story basically feels like I am watching the life story of only one character (Sun). And I feel like his acting is not so good.

Also I don't feel any chemistry between the couple , didn't like the casting. I wanted to see equally of both the main character not just one. The way the top (jay) falls in love with bottom (Sun) is also weird. I am talking about their first meeting(you will understand what I am talking about if you have watched the series).Overall not worth it. Not much depth in the acting or story either. You can give the manhwa a try but the live action ain't worth it.

loss, revenge and love

Overall: unique premise with solid chemistry. Note: this series and review have several very disturbing images/scenes. I noted timings to take out the most severe ones. The series was based on a manhwa/webtoon of the same name. I read the source material, but I reviewed the series based on it's own merits. 10 episodes about 45 minutes each. Aired on iQIYI https://www.iq.com/play/payback-uncut-episode-1-1h8pgey90dg?lang=en_us

Content Warnings: past (murder, suicide, manipulation, coercion, blood, death, beaten up, severe bullying); present (punches, near sexual assault, non/dub con turned consensual/it's complicated*, mental health struggles, coerced oral sex/sex trafficking, kidnapping, beaten up, drugging, murders, torture, self harm, rape, gang rape)

Skip Suggestions (to take out the most severe content warnings, I might have missed some flashbacks with his brother)
- episode 1: 7:10-7:40, 23:20-24
- episode 6: 43:30-43:45
- episode 7: 12:15-12:45, 42:50-44:05, 50:55-51:20, 55-56:30
- episode 8: beginning-3:40, 49:50-51:510 (part of a movie they are filming)
- episode 9: 2:15-2:30, 36:30-42:05, 1hr-end is a violent fight scene
- episode 10: 26:25-27, 45:30-46 or continue to 48:30 though 1 character gets his cummepence), 1hr1min40-1hr1min55, 1hr5min30-1hr6min40s

What I Liked
- unique, gritty vibe
- supportive friend and manager
- acting (normally low affect is tricky, but the actor has done a great job and I understand why the character was that way)
- chemistry
- the uncle was funny
- that the manager suggested a therapist
- evildoers got their cummepence

Room For Improvement
- I was a little confused in the beginning due to multiple timeline jumps and characters who changed hair color (update: note that the source material does this as well so it is a faithful adaptation in that regard)
- music too loud at times or doesn't completely match the vibe of the scene
- the leads needed more screen time, they could have reduced some side characters/plot to better explain the plot
- exposition dumps

*my take on the physical intimacy with the leads - It didn't feel non-consensual to me.
Sun - he says he is guilty for what happened (others had a role hence the revenge). I don't think he thinks he deserves to feel, especially happiness/pleasure. From his dream, the viewer sees there is attraction. So the non con didn't feel as much as non con to me. In the past with the crying while being intimate, one part was emotional sadness and another may have been physical pain; however, he wanted physical pain, he did not think he deserved a pleasurable experience.

Jay - I believe it started as a game to get Sun to feel things and then changed to genuine love/caring especially after he learned something. Jay's interest in Sun crying makes me think that Jay has not cried (ever/in a long time) and was fascinated by it in the past and wants to see Sun having feelings again, including happiness and pleasure.

Maybe the real revenge was the friends we made along the way

Wanna know what the capital of Lithuania is? Are you into pink bunnies and men with bloody faces? Every time I pitch this to my friends they go "how on earth does that make sense" and every time I have to convince them that it kinda really does. YES this guy used to extort people for money. YES he got ripped off by his ex. YES he's now going to take revenge on said ex by... becoming a famous actor? This works because Minlee is Minlee and I believed everything he did as Sun. I was sold the moment he slammed that knife into the table at his audition. Perfect beautiful man. Toptap as Jay is also good, but there's something uncanny and slick about his styling that is not my cup of tea. But no matter. This drama serves:

- FIGHTING. BLOOD. ACTION.
- EMOTIONS. CONFLICT.
- FOUND FAMILY. CONNECTIONS. SUN DESERVES TO BE LOVED, ACTUALLY
- SE....X

the NC scenes are quickly becoming infamous, and for good reason. People on Reddit have been working overtime to adjust lighting and slow things down to see if they can catch a glimpse of Real genitals. That's how explicit the scenes feel. A statement was released begging people not to share and upload the clips to social media (and porn sites?), which might have been a very sneaky tricksy way of getting more eyeballs on this show. All the love and respect to the actors, producers, intimacy coordinators etc. etc. etc. This show works because there was so much talent on board at all times, both in front of and behind the camera.

Either way. I've had a blast watching this. I have some issues with how the main conflict was resolved by the end, and feel like Payback could have used a couple more episodes to really stick the landing. But this was good fun and emotional turmoil. Waiting for the next episode was agony and I must thank the Payback team for releasing Minlee and Toptap's reaction videos in between eps to tide us over until the next one.

Anyway 9/10. Big recommend.

Electric Chemistry, Dark Secrets & One Hell of a Payback!!!!

Came for Revenge but stayed for Jay and Sun!!!

I really enjoyed Payback. This was one of those BLs where I became invested not only in the romance but in the characters and the world the drama created. The leads did an excellent job portraying their roles, and the chemistry between Jay and Sun was probably one of my favourite things about the series. Every time they were together, there was an electricity between them whether they were simply having a conversation, arguing, or getting physical. You could feel the attraction and tension.

Sun was such a complex, traumatised character. He spent so much of the story pretending that he was numb and that nothing affected him, when in reality he was feeling everything grief, anger, betrayal, fear and eventually love. Jay had his own emotional baggage and trauma, but there was an important difference between them: Jay was much more in touch with his feelings. He understood what he was feeling and, importantly, he seemed to understand Sun even when Sun couldn’t articulate what was going on inside him.

And that love scene… WOW. 😂 Honestly, one of the best I’ve seen in the BL world. What made it work for me wasn’t just the physical chemistry; there was so much emotion underneath it. It felt like a culmination of everything these two had been struggling to express.

Jay actually reminded me a little of Tada from Reset although Reset had much more comedic, almost cartoonish villains and, of course, the whole time-transmigration element. Payback was considerably darker and more grounded.

The entertainment industry

I thought the drama also did a really good job of showing the seedy and sinister side of the entertainment industry. The compromises artists choose to make, the exploitation of people desperate for an opportunity and the way power can be abused were particularly effective.

What makes it uncomfortable is that none of it feels completely unbelievable. We’ve heard enough through the media about exploitation and abuse within entertainment industries to know that these kinds of power dynamics aren’t simply fictional. Obviously, drama has to heighten things, but Payback captures that uncomfortable reality of people being willing to tolerate almost anything for their chance to succeed.

The supporting characters

And we absolutely have to talk about Pkajaorn because he was one of the angels of this show! 😇 He was such a good manager and, more importantly, a genuinely good person. I really liked that his role wasn’t simply “Sun’s manager”. You could see how much he contributed to Sun’s healing journey by giving him stability, support and someone he could actually trust.

Parameee also did a really good job, and having PKN (Boss) and Max appear as guests definitely added something to the show. Those little connections and appearances were a nice touch.

The manhwa adaptation

I also have to give credit to the production for how well they adapted the manhwa. They stayed relatively close to the source material while making changes where necessary to make the story work for a Thai audience and a live-action format.

I actually think this was the right approach. Sometimes adaptations try so hard to reproduce the original that they end up feeling unnatural in a different medium. Payback kept the core characters, relationships and darker tone of the original, while adapting certain elements so they made sense within the Thai setting and the limitations of a live-action BL.

The changes didn’t feel like they were disrespecting the manhwa; rather, they felt like an attempt to translate the story rather than simply copy it. And for me, that’s what a good adaptation should do.

I’ve seen some of the criticism from people who have read the original, and having looked at parts of the source material myself, I can understand where some of it comes from. I haven’t read the entire manhwa, though, so I’m judging the series primarily on what I watched rather than trying to compare every detail with the original.

There were definitely moments where I felt the drama didn’t give us enough context. I didn’t always understand the first meeting between Jay and Sun, some of the early interactions felt a little random, and I sometimes wondered where the revenge storyline was actually going. For a show called Payback, the revenge definitely gets pushed into the background for quite a lot of the series, only to come rushing back towards the end.

I can also understand the criticism that the adaptation removed or changed some important material. If the original gives much more context to certain characters and events, then removing those pieces can make the drama feel confusing rather than mysterious.

I don’t, however, agree with the idea that Jay was one-dimensional. I actually thought Jay was one of the more interesting characters. Was he softened compared with the original? Yes, absolutely. But I don’t think that means he lacked complexity.

The Jay we see in the drama is still controlling, calculating and morally questionable, but we also see his emotional side and, importantly, his capacity to understand Sun. His relationship with Sun brings out a side of him that we don’t necessarily see elsewhere. Personally, I liked that version of Jay.

And I think this is where adaptations of toxic or darker MLs have a difficult balancing act. If you make the ML extremely toxic, obsessive and possessive, there will inevitably be criticism of romanticising unhealthy behaviour. We’ve seen similar debates around dramas like Double Helix and To My Shore. But if you soften the character too much, fans of the source material understandably feel that you’ve taken away what made the character distinctive in the first place.

So I can actually understand both sides of the argument.

And finally…

For me, the bigger problem wasn’t that Jay was softened. It was that the revenge storyline was softened along with him. The title is Payback, so I wanted the revenge to remain central to the story. Instead, there was a lot of attention given to secondary characters and other storylines, and then the actual revenge was compressed into the final episode.

That was probably my biggest disappointment.

I also think the ending could have been much more satisfying. The main antagonist being dealt with by the police felt almost too convenient. 😂 After everything we’d watched, I wanted Jay to have a much bigger role in bringing about his downfall. Sun to really have satisfying end for Sunny. That bastard dying of a heart attack was WAY too easy! 😂

After everything he did, I wanted consequences proper consequences! He really escaped the ending he deserved. All the villains just died.

Overall, though, Payback was a really enjoyable watch. Great chemistry, complicated characters, a surprisingly dark look at the entertainment industry and a very solid adaptation of the manhwa. Most importantly, Jay and Sun’s relationship felt like it had genuine emotional weight behind it, which made their eventual connection that much more satisfying.

Now i just need someone to do a compilation of Sun and Jay scenes particularly the rooftops!!!

Less About Revenge, More About Found Family

My journey with Payback started on a random Wednesday afternoon. Procrastinating because I didn't want to work somehow led to binge-watching five episodes in one go. The hype was real, and my mind was blown, and I was hooked. Needless to say, no work was done that afternoon. And I have thoroughly (and largely enjoyed) my time with this drama.

While the story begins with revenge as its central theme, the plot expands as the episodes unfold. It morphs from this simple, straightforward goal to become about Sun finding himself, forgiving himself, and, in a way, finding a home and a family to 'replace' the one he lost 5 years prior. He learns to not only love and forgive himself, but also to allow love (in its different forms) to find a place in his heart.

What I Liked
☀️Sun's relationship with Kajorn and Sky
It was the best part of this story IMO. It contributes toabout 95% of his healing journey. Forget Jay. Were it not for these two, I think Sun's journey would've taken a lot longer than it did.

And Kajorn is the MVP of this whole show. No other character made me laugh as much as he did. Someone should add comedy to the tags, coz some of this shit was funny as fuck.

☀️The Acting - Some of the side characters did leave much to be desired. However, the main characters and the major supporting roles did their job quite well. Aside from Boss (oh! and Max), I didn't know any of the other faces in the show, and they all impressed me with their performances.

☀️The Chemistry - The main leads work incredibly well together and play off each other beautifully. I am so impressed that I wish the BL gods would allow them to work together again. And please let them have a good script and a good director.

☀️Pacing & Plot - I have not read the source material, so I only have the adaptation to go off of. I was not bored once. I was stressed, I was angry, I was giggling, but I was never bored.

What Could've Been Better
🎥Episode 9 - What the hell was that? It's been a week (since the episode aired) and I'm still mad. Those were some incredibly dumb decisions that did not fit the character profiles established throughout the show, especially Sun's.

🎥The Villains' Ending - The drama does not shy away from showing the horrible things that go on behind the scenes in the entertainment industry. How it chews and spits out the innocents whose crime is to have a dream.

That part I liked. I was horrified by it (still am tbh), but I like that they didn't try to sugarcoat it.

So, based on the horrific things I was subjected to over the 10 episodes, I feel like two of the main villains, Songphon and Kongkiat, got off way too easily. I wasn't satisfied. I wanted a blow-up. I wanted them exposed to the public and shamed. Only then could they die.

The only villain whose ending I found satisfactory is Sunny's. After all the shit he unapologetically did not only to Sun but also to the numerous faceless young boys, so he could keep his sponsor happy and maintain his position in the industry, you couldn't pay me to care or feel bad for him, and where he ended up. I simply do not have that much sympathy or compassion in me.

☀️Final Thoughts☀️
Actually, I think I've run out of words for a proper conclusion😅. I've written too many reviews this week. Just go watch it. It's worth your time

Do you believe in karma?

This whole year most of the BL series have done nothing but greatly exceed my expectations. And I'm happy to say that this series also falls under this category. While I definitely had pretty high expectations for this one, it somehow still exceeded them. This BL is definitely a BL of the year 2026 for me.
Excellent acting, a fantastic plot with intriguing and surprising plot twists, stunning visuals, and everything else are truly exceptional. And of course I want to mention the music, which is also quite a highlight for me in this series.

Things I liked:
1. Plot twists. Genuinely made it so much better for me.
2. Even every small detail counts.
3. Sun. The greatest main character in BL history! The growth, maturity, and general intelligence of that guy are just off the charts.
4. Khajorn. The best father figure, together with Sky, he became a family that Sun so badly needed without even realizing it.
I will forever miss his kind, funny, and just all-around great character, as well as his goofy laughs.
5. Sky. The sweetest sunshine that helped a lot with all the heavy themes of this series with his cheerful character.
6. Action. Great action, the fighting scenes were actually interesting instead of being cringy and felt more or less realistic.
7. Acting. Just pure perfection.
8. Music. It is well-timed and fits the series so nicely.
9. Everyone got what they deserved, so how can I complain?

Things I disliked:
1. Pakin and Sky not becoming anything. Fear of Boss's fans or fear of wasting screen time—either way, I really felt like something would happen. We ended up just getting teased.
2. The end felt rushed. I'd say they would've benefited from at least 2 more episodes, but oh well.

Overall this was an incredible series, and I definitely will be rewatching this masterpiece again!

is payback good bl to watch?

I would say yes, it is good drama. The story is interesting, and every episode is like a short movie till now, and we see gradual changes in atmosphere, characters. I have a soft spot for this, to see the minute changes in characters and noticing the story more and observing whole scenes background and lightning.

But here in this drama, visuals are top tier. The cinematography is one of the best, directors absolutely knows what he wants and how can he get it. And I am not a fan of NC scenes or over-the-top sexual energy. It is just not my cup of tea because it mostly overshadows other things of drama like storytelling, direction, dialogue of the show or drama, especially in the BL industry. I have seen it. But in this one, though NC scenes are here, I don't care because the story has substance and the direction is brilliant. I have read the manhwa, and yeah, they are doing absolutely best. The show is 10 ep, and I can't wait to see the upcoming  episodes.

Now let's talk about things that could be better. First is acting. The actors are really handsome, and they are not bad. But at some of the time when I was watching the scenes, I would notice the body language and overall expression not up to the whole context.  It could be miscommunication, or just because I read the manhwa,. Or maybe because in manhwa you can read what is going inside the mind of the character, which is not possible in drama for every scene. So I can't say surely if the actors are bad.

At the end of the day, for me acting does look a little bad. It is not nitpicking or something, just criticism, as the actors are young and inexperienced, you can see it. As their first work, they did a great job, and I would definitely look up for their next work. They have high potential plus killing visuals. and they did put effort to play these complex characters.

That's all. Other things are good. Also, I would like to shout out to two characters. One is the actor who played Manager Khunnote, Jirapat Uttamanan Kajorn Piyawanichkul, and second is Shogun Paramee Thesdaroon "Sky" Phanuwat Manasakdech. They are so good...

And that's all, the end of my review.

Speechless: Top-tier storytelling that’s not your typical BL

I’m still speechless after finishing this drama last night. This is the top-tier storytelling that all future queer dramas need to take note of.

Let me start my review by saying that calling Payback a BL drama feels like a disservice to what the creators pulled off—it is so much more than that. While it has the elements you might expect from the genre, this drama isn't just a simple romance set against the backdrop of the entertainment industry. It is a raw, intense character study about guilt, survival, and redemption.

Our male lead is Sun, a young man carrying a crushing weight of grief. Five years ago, his brother was brutally killed, his mother passed away, and his boyfriend ran away after stealing every cent of his money. Because of his past as a ruthless debt collector, he truly believes he is the one who caused his family's destruction. Sun’s real journey begins when he accidentally discovers his treacherous ex-boyfriend Bank (now Sunny) is a rising star at a major entertainment agency, but worse—Sunny was the one who pointed the thugs directly at his younger brother. Fuelled by this shattering revelation, Sun decides to become an actor to look his destroyer in the eye and exact total revenge.

On paper, this setup sounds like the perfect recipe for a fun, soapy ride where a man becomes a famous superstar to publicly ruin his ex. But that is absolutely not where the show goes. In fact, Sun never actually becomes a famous actor, and he gets very little acting to do throughout the series.

Instead, Payback subverts all expectations to deliver an exquisite character study. It is about a man who rights wrongs—not even for himself, but for all the vulnerable people around him.
The drama is dark, and I’m not talking about a toxic romance. I am talking about the dark side of the entertainment industry. There’s murder—more than one actually—multiple assaults, and prostitution. None of it is being glossed over. In fact, it’s graphic so the viewer can understand the characters better. If you are into lighthearted college BL or if you like things like Jack and Joker, Payback is not it. This drama is truly dark and brutal. If you are easily triggered by those topics, this is not going to be a show for you. I recommend simply staying away. Don’t try to push through it hoping for quick NC scenes and easy chemistry. You simply don’t have the guts for everything else.

The show has absolutely amazing writers. There is not a lot said between some of the characters, and the fact that Sun does not speak much actually speaks volumes. As a viewer, you have to learn how to read between the lines and pick up on visual clues. Some things are deeply confusing and make no sense at the beginning. However, the writers masterfully feed those bits and pieces of information throughout the show. If you think that Min’s acting is stiff for the majority of the series, just wait. Once you get to those final three episodes, you will completely understand the reasons why he is the way he is. Additionally, his fight scenes are superb and first and foremost very realistic.

The acting, production quality, and storytelling in this drama are unlike anything I have ever seen in the genre. Honestly, it doesn't truly feel like a BL drama. While there is a central romance plot between Sun and his mysterious backer, Jay—who turns out to be his one-night stand from five years ago—their romance is not the core of the story. Yes, it’s very important for Sun’s character development, but Jay gets surprisingly little screen time, and the spotlight remains firmly on Sun. So I do recommend adjusting your expectations here as well.

Rightfully so, because Min’s performance as Sun is absolutely mind-blowing. He seamlessly balances two entirely different sides of the same man. On one hand, we see him in flashbacks as a brutal debt collector who only cares about hurting people for money. On the other hand, we see his current self: a man completely numb on the inside, hollowed out by intense guilt.

Yet, the best part of the show lies in the profound vulnerability during the few scenes Sun and Jay share. Their intimacy needs its own separate mention. The beginning of their dynamic is quite rocky. Jay is arrogant, doesn't take no for an answer, and is a possessive man who wants what he wants. He doesn't really care to talk to Sun about anything. As a matter of fact, these two don’t really talk about their relationship, and their romance is not a traditional one. It’s obvious that they first connected because of an physical attraction, and their relationship built on that chemistry first. Because they are both screwed up and don’t know how to communicate, they have their own quirks that somehow work for them. While it started off strangely, it developed into something meaningful and fulfilling. They are a bit codependent and toxic, but because they are both broken men, they find contentment with one another.

The chemistry itself between the actors is amazing. They delivered some of the best screen kisses and probably the best, most realistic NC scene I’ve seen in a BL. And I have watched a lot of them, and you will definitely blush watching this one. I’m glad the director didn't go overboard with too many of those; there is just one scene, and it works nicely with the romance storyline to serve the character development. I highly commend the actors for putting on such a great performance. I really hope they get more dramas together.

Additionally, the side characters added immense depth to the story. Sun’s manager Kajorn, Jay’s uncle, Jo, and Grandpa Suchat were all amazing, interesting, and funny. I loved seeing these older actors on screen. Even the minor actors did a devastatingly good job. The pool scene in the final episodes was absolutely heartbreaking, and the horror of the moment came through clearly via the incredible acting of the performer playing the drowning victim. I also absolutely adored the cameos from Max and Boss. It was great to see them showcase their acting range separately from their usual work as a fixed couple, and Boss did extremely well. He was so interesting to look at in the role of the photographer.

I need to give special mention to the music. I am a music junkie and music is extremely important for me when I watch something. In Payback music adds real depth and character to each scene. What I like is that there is a combination of different types of soundtracks from funky to heartbreaking and each one helps the viewer to understand the mood and to feel what character feels when watching a scene. The NC scene had an absolutely devastating background score.

Everything about Payback—from the sharp camera angles and dark color grading to the weird pink bunny mascot—truly made this show unforgettable. It impacted me in a way where I know I will be thinking about it for a very long time.

Is Payback perfect? No. There are definitely some things I would improve as far as the romantic storyline goes. I would clean up some of the scenes and dialogue in the first half. But is it memorable? Absolutely. It is unlike anything that has ever been done before. The production quality is top-tier. I highly recommend Payback to anyone who wants to step away from the typical BL flare and watch something with genuine depth, amazing chemistry, and dark themes that will make you think.

And those kisses... my God!

For me, Payback was a truly unique BL. It had been a long time since I had looked forward to a Saturday with so much excitement. It completely changed my weekend routine—I made sure to be free at the exact time a new episode was released.

I had never read the webtoon, but I fell in love with the series from the very first episode.

As the story progressed, I realized that ten episodes would never be enough to do it justice, and unfortunately, I was right.

If I have one major disappointment with this production, it is its rushed and emotionally underwhelming ending.

I honestly don't understand Thai productions sometimes. When a series is genuinely good, wins over the audience, and has a committed cast, they shorten it. Yet when a production is mediocre, it gets dragged out far longer than necessary. Payback deserved at least two more episodes.

The raw, realistic, and difficult portrayal of the entertainment industry was heartbreaking. Knowing that the events depicted are inspired by realities that still exist is a painful reminder of how far we are from achieving basic human decency. It was genuinely shocking.

On the other hand, I have to say that this series features some of the most passionate and beautiful kisses I've ever seen between BL leads. Wow! Beautiful, sensual, and perfectly supported by their incredible chemistry, Min and Toptap completely stole the show. I don't think I'll forget those brilliantly filmed intimate scenes in Episode 8 anytime soon.

I can only hope this pair gets to work together again very soon—preferably in a more romantic story and a much less toxic one.

Had it not been for the final episode, where even the long-awaited revenge arcs failed to deliver a satisfying conclusion, my rating would have been a perfect 10.

Even with its plot holes, this was still an excellent production. Wonderfully engaging, irresistibly captivating, and absolutely worth watching.

And those kisses... my God!

WHAT. AN. ADAPTATION. ABSOLUTE CINEMA!!

I genuinely can't remember the last time I was this impressed by a BL adaptation. From beginning to end, Payback exceeded every expectation I had.

As someone who read the manhwa first, seeing so many scenes, outfits, and iconic moments recreated almost frame by frame had me absolutely GAGGED. It was obvious how much love and respect went into bringing this story to life.

But what impressed me the most wasn't just how faithful it was—it was how incredible the production was as a whole. The cinematography, the sets, the costumes, the pacing, the plot twists... everything felt polished and intentional. Every episode left me wanting more.

I also loved how the series explored the darker side of the entertainment industry. The abuse, manipulation, empty promises, and exploitation weren't treated as cheap drama—they felt real, and that's exactly what made the story so impactful.

Another thing I really appreciated was the way it handled revenge. It wasn't presented as something purely satisfying or purely destructive. Jay and Sun walked the same path but reached completely different emotional destinations. For Jay, revenge brought the closure he had been searching for. For Sun, even after getting what he wanted, the emptiness remained. I loved that the series showed both sides instead of pretending revenge has only one outcome.

And chemistry?? Every interaction was packed with tension, emotion, and just enough toxicity to keep me completely invested. The cast absolutely understood the assignment.

Honestly, I have almost nothing to complain about. Payback delivered on every level: romance, suspense, emotional depth, production quality, and an adaptation that truly honored its source material while still feeling fresh.

Without a doubt, one of my favorite BLs of the year—and one of the best adaptations I've watched in a long time.

Ps.: Pakin and Sky... ABSULUTE END GAME! IDC!

I really love Sun with the blonde hair look(///∇///), and I hope to see Min-lee in a character like this again.ヽ(●´ε`●)ノ

Payback is a remarkable masterpiece of 2026 bl productions.

I started watching Payback after seeing the trailers online. The promotional material immediately caught my attention because the cinematography looked beautiful and the storyline seemed intriguing. I was also excited to see a cast made up mostly of newcomers. I always enjoy discovering new actors at the beginning of their careers, so that was one of the biggest reasons I decided to give this series a chance.

From the very first episode, the drama kept me invested. The plot builds suspense at just the right pace without becoming repetitive or dragging the story down. There is always enough happening to keep the audience engaged while still allowing emotional moments to breathe. What impressed me the most was that, for the first time in a long while, I didn't skip a single scene. Normally, if a drama starts to feel slow, I'll find myself jumping ahead to the next interesting moment. With Payback, that never happened. Every episode held my attention from beginning to end because I genuinely wanted to know what would happen next.

The cast was another major strength of the series. The main actors delivered convincing performances that made their characters feel authentic. The standout performance for me was Sunny, the main antagonist. His portrayal was so believable that I found myself genuinely resenting the character, which is always a sign of a great villain. He brought intensity to every scene and made the conflict feel real.

The supporting cast also deserves recognition. Sky, in particular, impressed me with his emotional performance. One of his scenes, especially when he experiences a panic attack, felt incredibly realistic. His acting communicated fear and vulnerability so well that I could feel his emotions through the screen. It was one of the most memorable moments in the drama.

Despite the serious themes, the series also balances its tone with humour. Jay's uncle and the manager provided plenty of comic relief without disrupting the emotional weight of the story. Their interactions felt natural and often lightened the mood at exactly the right moments. The manager's relationship with the younger characters was especially entertaining, giving off the energy of an exhausted father trying to keep a group of chaotic but lovable kids under control.

I also appreciated the character development throughout the series. Sky's growth as an actor was satisfying to watch, especially since the drama explores the entertainment industry itself. We see his confidence and abilities develop over time. The main lead also undergoes a compelling transformation, moving from someone consumed by revenge to someone who ultimately chooses happiness and a future worth living for. These character arcs made the story even more rewarding.

From a production standpoint, Payback is visually impressive. The directing, cinematography and colour grading all contribute to a polished viewing experience. Every scene feels carefully crafted, making the series enjoyable to watch. While I didn't pay much attention to the soundtrack, the overall production quality was consistently strong.

My only criticism is the final episode. After such well-paced storytelling throughout the first nine episodes, the ending felt rushed. I believe the drama would have benefited from at least 12 episodes. More time could have been spent showing the villains facing the consequences of their actions, as well as allowing Sun's acting career to flourish so we could fully enjoy his success. I also would have loved to see Sunny witness that success while continuing to struggle with the consequences of his own choices. In my opinion, the villains got off too easily. They should have been forced to live with the consequences of what they had done rather than receiving such an easy way out. Those moments deserved a little more room to breathe instead of being wrapped up so quickly. However, considering this is an adaptation of a manhwa, which I haven't read, it's possible the drama simply stayed faithful to the original ending.

Overall, Payback exceeded my expectations. It offers an engaging story, strong performances and excellent production values. The cast fits their roles perfectly, making every character feel believable and memorable. I would highly recommend this drama not only to BL fans but also to anyone looking for a well-acted series with compelling storytelling, emotional character development and consistently entertaining pacing.
