A human drama set in a kuji-yado, an inn that also functioned as a place where commoners could have their legal procedures handled on their behalf. Living there as a lodger is Tamura Kikutaro, who, while advising Genjuro, the owner of the Koiya, also supports his younger brother Tamura Tetsuzo, now the head doshin officer, in solving cases ranging from everyday human-interest disputes to complex incidents with flair. Kikutaro is the son of Tamura Jiemon, a doshin-gashira at the Kyoto Higashi Magistrate’s Office, born to a teahouse woman in Gion. In order to pass on the hereditary position to his legitimate younger brother Tetsuzo, Kikutaro suddenly leaves home one day and begins a life of wandering indulgence. After drifting from place to place, he eventually returns to Kyoto and becomes a lodger at the Koiya kuji-yado, where he serves both as a bodyguard and an advisor. He also acts as a confidant to his half-brother Tetsuzo, now the doshin-gashira, helping to resolve a wide range of cases with both skill and compassion. The term “hannari” refers to something bright, elegant, and refined in appearance. A kuji-yado was, during the Edo period, an inn that handled legal matters for common people, serving a role similar to modern judicial scriveners or law offices, while also providing lodging.
