Even after ten years of marriage, do you really know the person sleeping next to you?This episode finally answers so many of my questions. The slow-moving train has gained momentum and is now running at full speed…and just when you think you finally know everything, there’s a wall standing right in front of it.The moment Sakiko places three IDs on the table…wow. That is intelligently written storytelling. This is what I admire about Japanese writers. They challenge our brains and intelligence, not through cheap misdirection like a magician performing a trick, but through wonderful storytelling. Something as ordinary as a few old driver’s licenses suddenly tells us an entire history of a woman we thought we knew.But after all these revelations, I found myself asking…is this really love?Mitsuru and Sakiko have been married for ten years, yet both have kept enormous parts of themselves hidden. If not for the bus accident, would any of these secrets ever have been revealed?Maybe their happy marriage wasn’t really a facade. Maybe those smooth and calm waters were genuinely peaceful…there were simply things hidden underneath. Nothing sinister, just the parts of ourselves we choose to keep private, even from the person sleeping beside us.It also made me wonder about a society that places so much importance on perception, harmony and appearing to have everything together. Does that create too much pressure to conform instead of allowing people simply to be individuals?Ironically, after ten years of marriage, Mitsuru and Sakiko may only now be truly getting to know each other.And that washing machine certainly has a story to tell.The hanging T-shirt is almost dry. After everything that’s been washed, exposed and hung out for both of them to finally see, I wonder whether their marriage can survive the final cycle…and whether they can truly move forward once that T-shirt dries.I know Sonoda did.
