After being suddenly confessed to by Asamiya Kosei, Mayama Haru cannot figure out whether Asamiya’s “like” is genuine romantic interest or simply affection for him as a friend. Even so, Asamiya continues to show his affection without change, waiting for Mayama at the school gate every morning, buying him bread from the school shop, and leaving sticky notes telling him what he likes about him. As the time Mayama spends with Asamiya increases, he gradually begins to open his heart to Asamiya’s kindness and sincerity. However, he feels intimidated when interacting with Sakaki and Tsunekawada, Asamiya’s friends who are popular at school, and begins to feel that they live in a completely different world from him. During PE class, Asamiya acts as though he wants Mayama all to himself, and openly becomes jealous when Sakaki jokingly approaches Mayama. Later, on the balcony, Asamiya gently embraces Mayama and asks, “Am I still far away?” He straightforwardly tells Mayama that his “like” is not something he gives to just anyone. Touched by those feelings, Mayama gradually begins to understand that Asamiya’s feelings are genuine. Meanwhile, Sakaki and Tsunekawada also apologize to Mayama and confess that they wanted to become friends with him precisely because he is someone important to Asamiya, someone Asamiya feels comfortable opening up to. Mayama realizes for the first time that he was the one who had created a barrier between himself and others by labeling people as “the popular group” and “the unpopular group.” He naturally becomes comfortable with both of them, and the three end up working together as members of the school festival committee. On the way home, Asamiya honestly admits that he does not want to do anything Mayama would dislike, and Mayama’s heart is shaken even more by his kindness. However, a painful memory from middle school, when he was teased after confessing his feelings to someone, resurfaces, making him believe that someone like him is not worthy of Asamiya.
