Editorials In the first lifetime, the story begins on their wedding night where Mang Keung's husband, Kee Leung gets conscripted by the imperial court to build the Great Wall. After travelling a vast distance to see him, she is met with tragic news of his passing with his remains buried beneath the Great Wall. As she wept bitterly, an eight-hundred-li section of the wall suddenly collapses; through dripping her blood onto the pile of bleached bones, she successfully identified her husband's remains. When Emperor Chun Chi summons her, he is so struck by her beauty that he desires to take her as a concubine. Mang Keung requests that his majesty first travel to Qinhuangdao to perform mourning rites for Kee Leung, to which he consents to. After paying his respects to Kee Leung, Mang Keung —clutching her husband's remains—cast herself into the sea and takes her own life at the very spot where the Mang Keung Neui Temple stands today.
