Editorials In the fifth lifetime, the story is set during the Ming Dynasty. Grand Preceptor Chun and Sheung Ding Kwok were close friends; in the presence of the entire imperial court, Grand Preceptor Chun betrothed his daughter, Chun Suet Mui to Sheung Ding Kwok’s son, Sheung Lam. When, the Sheung family suffered a series of devastating fires and fell into ruin, Grand Preceptor Chun reneged on the marriage contract, causing Sheung Lam to fall ill from lovesickness. Substituting a maidservant for Suet Mui, Ngoi Yuk marries Sheung Lam and bears him a son, Sheung Lo, after their wedding night together. Later, when the deception is exposed, Sheung Lam dies from grief and indignation. To honour him, Suet Mui becomes a widow for Sheung Lam’s sake and raises his son, Sheung Lo—an act immortalized in the idiom "Suet Mui Teaches Her Son."
