During the Second Sino-Japanese War, 20,000 Japanese troops and 50 tanks attacked Pa Tou Lou Tzu (Badaling), a key point along the Great Wall of China. In one of the first major clashes, seven Chinese soldiers held off the Japanese for five days, using stick grenades to destroy machine gun nests and killing the Japanese inside. Mongol mercenaries and Japanese forces failed in their first attack, losing all their men. On the sixth day, the defenders were killed, but their efforts allowed other Chinese forces to retreat, deceiving the Japanese into believing they faced a much larger force.
