The drama Descendants of the Sun (Song Joong Ki, Song Hye Kyo, Jin Goo, Kim Ji Won), which is marking its 10th anniversary this year, will be remade as an Indonesian film.

On September 7, NEW announced that it plans to release Descendants of the Sun Indonesia (working title), a film that reinterprets Descendants of the Sun to suit local sentiments and settings, in Indonesia in 2027.

This project will go beyond simply exporting remake rights, as it will be carried out as a co-production in which NEW directly participates in the production journey, including planning and production.

Originally aired in 2016, Descendants of the Sun depicts the life and choices of soldiers and doctors in the harsh conditions of a foreign land. At the time, it recorded a peak viewership rating of 38.8 percent and gained popularity across Asia, bolstering the Hallyu wave.

Director Hanung Bramantyo will helm the Indonesian remake. He previously turned the Indonesian remake of NEW's film Miracle in Cell No. 7 into a local box-office hit and has won the Best Director award at the Indonesian Film Festival twice.

Reza Rahadian and Dian Sastrowardoyo will star as the leads. Reza Rahadian is one of Indonesia's leading actors and previously served as chairman of the Indonesian Film Festival.

On September 5, a related session was also held at Indonesia's creative and cultural festival IdeaFest, with the director and lead actors in attendance.

Having completed filming and currently in post-production, Descendants of the Sun Indonesia will meet audiences in Indonesian theaters in 2027. In Korea, NEW's content distribution affiliate Contents Panda will handle its distribution and release.
