I find it difficult to understand why the authors wanted to give Park Yeong Beom (her first boyfriend) an
unhappy ending. I felt that it tarnished the story of such a fantastic chronicle of family life. I understand that he could have a place in his heart for her for the rest of his life, as many do for the person they might say they loved the most, but making him so unhappy his whole life was sad! This will probably be the series that tops my list this year.

I thought his arch was true to life, especially his whole life of unhappiness.  I married a mama's boy just like him against my family's concerns, and mine. I knew how much she controlled him and his siblings, yet I thought he'd change. If I had the excuse I was pregnant it would've been been less painful in the ensuing years bc I wasn't MADE to marry him. But no, I went in willingly. After years I eventually had to leave him WHILE still loving him.

An old idiom "How a man treats his mother is how he will treat his wife" is indicative and rarely fails. If he treats her well then he'll more than likely treat his wife well, and if there's evidence he's under the mother's domination, and controls her 'child' then the wife's opinion is null & void from the start in every area of the marriage, including their children. Such a marriage is best left for a woman who can worship their mother-in-law at the expense of herself and everyone else, including her children.

Yeah I find it quite strange, because everyone has happy ending here, even bu sanggil. So how come only park yeongbeom had such sad ending?
I mean him having happy ending much later in his life is not unrealistic. He also unfortunately don’t have character development somehow in this drama

Well this show is about the generations shape each other, in particular with post WW2 South Korea.  His ending is a direct consequence of his mother´s personality and his refusal to choose one side, which don´t forget, is a direct contrast to how Gwan-Sik went against his mother and grandmother. He got the love of his life, so it´s not surprising that they depict Yeong Beom being unhappy not being able to do the same.
