For people who are interested in how certain parts of the novel are different from the drama, I have summarised certain details for the first ten chapters of the novel to help viewers understand how and why the drama up to episode 16 deviates from the novel. Details in the comment below:

If you have questions, you can reply to that comment or ask here. I have also mentioned specific other chapters but chose not to expand on those statements, unless someone wants to know specifics. Hope this helps.

So did they make XJS’s character less likeable here for the sake of developing a healthy and strong relationship between the main couple? From the excerpts I read, I don’t think he was like this

I was hoping someone would add this in the discussion~ Thanks a bunch, Xiang! (˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶) .ᐟ.ᐟ

Also if i remember there was no empress in novel , only consorts .

The ml's father actually supported him but hated the fl and tried to kill her many times and there was mention of ml's brother but no such name was there only that emperor tolerated and supported the ml actually because ml had leverage he was competent and only he could be the crown prince the rest brothers were no good .

There was no plot of ml's mother suspicious death , also the sister was half sister of ml , on whom the emperor doted the most because she was the only child of the consort the emperor loved the most.

Also the sml was pretty lenient not abusive towards the sfl and very much in love with fl , no shady dealings .

The fl was also shown as pretty naive in beginning who uptil half of the novel loved the sml and hated ml they had this total push and pull thing , ml was a red flag sometimes in novel , half of the the time doubting the fl , and being jealous of sml even thinking fl wore red cause she wanted to distract all enemies of sml to herself during battles but she wore it as blood cannot be seen in red color dress.

Also the sml was a eunuch there , not at all interested in power and was blackmailed by empress dowager who knew his secret to gove up throne to his half brother

I am going to put my answer under spoilers:

In the novel, Xia Jingshi gave up Fu Yixiao to Feng Suige, believing that was best for her happiness but never explaining himself. In Chapter 35, the tragedy that shaped Xia Jingshi is revealed. The first time he fell in love, it was because a prostitute hired by the Imperial Consort (not his mother) played with his feelings and tries to seduce him  but withdraws. At first, he did not understand why Rao Ran did so.

Xia Jingshi is naturally afflicted with a condition that would be the equivalent of an unacceptable physical defect making him a eunuch. The Imperial Consort threatens him with two options: Summon the Royal Physicians for a physical examination and make the results public, or he must withdraw from the succession competition amongst princes for the heir position to the throne.

Xia Jingshi decides that as long as anyone else is his Princess Consort except Fu Yixiao, it doesn't matter.  Novel-Xia Jingshi is very different from Drama-Xia Jingshi. Novel-Xia Jingshi is my favourite character in the novel. All the heartless evil deeds or decisions attributed to drama-Xia Jingshi up until episode 16 including the death camp is not novel-Xia Jingshi, as far as my memory serves.

@Xiang83 omg that is so tragic! I wondered why he gave her up, I only skimmed through the part where he wrote a letter to FSG to treat FYX well. Now I understand. I wish they had kept his character as is just to make it hard to choose between the two guys. Or at least, make him a bit more interesting. I feel like it’s a cop out to make him the bad guy here still wanting to be with the FL despite everything, just to make the ML look better. As much as I love the main leads, I am not happy with the way they did the SML dirty lmao

Unfortunately if drama-Xia Jingshi is to resemble novel-Xia Jingshi in any manner, it might only happen in the final 10 episodes of the drama. I totally agree with the script changes for novel-Feng Suige forthis drama due to multiple reasons, and here's a few reasons for why:

Remember how Yixiao was tortured in Ep 2? In Chapter 8, Feng Suige went to the prison cell where Fu Yixiao is held. One of the two women he brought is his concubine Yun Yi, who suggests a whip soaked in chilli powder and salt water to lash Yixiao. Feng Suige smiles, and does not hesitate to tell her to go and get it prepared. Mei Yi is the other woman with Feng Suige, and when Mei Yi suggests assigning Yixiao to the Susha army red tent to be a military prostitute, Feng Suige slaps Mei Yi so hard that she falls to the ground. Then he orders a soldier to take Mei Yi there. After that, he indirectly threatens Yixiao about taking up Mei Yi's suggestion to make her a military prostitute.

I can see Feng Suige completely losing the audience by the end of this banter, before Yixiao even gets whipped by Yun Yi. In contrast during Chapter 2, Yixiao's mouth nearly gets her in trouble with the imperial envoy sent by the Emperor.  Xia Jingshi is forced to stipulate thirty lashes and then fifty lashes as a punishment in front of the envoy, due to Yuxiao disrespecting the imperial envoy and disobeying the imperial edict. Xia Jingshi then takes his leave, and has the imperial envoy taken to the rear hall to rest. When at least seventeen lashes are inflicted by an officer on Yixiao, Xia Jingshi shows up and stops the whipping.

In Chapter 32, Yun Yi goes to find Yixiao and is disrespectful to Yixiao who at that point, is the secondary consort of Feng Suige and ranked higher than Yun Yi. For disrespecting Yixiao, Yixiao slaps Yun Yi. When Feng Suige shows up and finds out what happens, Feng Suige punches Yun Yi in the stomach and then steps on her face. If the first thirty-five chapters of the novel were the drama, I find it hard to see how the audience would like Fu Yixiao and Feng Suige. Best to change the first thirty-five chapters significantly if this is going to be a drama.

Wow... Speechless... I'm so glad the drama version is much better and relatable.. That is not an act of a protagonist; that's a true villain. Drama FSG is so much like an angel compared to the novel version.. :'D What the drama showed us is nothing near cruel compared to how it was written in the source material... Yikes!

hi, i browse through the three  chapters and don't see the name Murong in them. Please spoil for me on who's the ultimate villain in the novel. Thanks.

Ep. 18 - why was the Eunuch so shocked when he sees the miraculous doctor coming out of the room?

Is the novel HE? I want to start reading but a bit afraid of the ending....

There is no Murong Yao in the novel. The ultimate villain is the Emperor of Jinxiu (Xia Jingshi's younger brother) who tries to kill Xia Jingshi. XIa Jingshi is very different in the novel, with Xiyang and Yixiao both in love with him until Yixiao falls in love with Feng Suige.

The novel is a happy ending for almost all considered, except Xiyang. By happy, I refer to the most fitting ending. But you will have to be prepared that novel-Feng Suige is significantly different in the first 35 chapters versus the current drama-Feng Suige. Xia Jingshi in the novel is almost unrecognisable in the current episodes of the drama. If you can accept the differences between the first 35 chapters of the novel versus episodes 1 to 16, you will have no trouble enjoying the novel.

Does FSG redeem himself as a ML in the end considering how much of a red flag he was. It’s hard to believe since we have more or less more of a gentleman on screen

I saw spoilers for the future of Xiyang in both the novel and drama and I feel like they made Jingshi way too cruel/evil in the drama 😭. In the last few chapters of the novel, it seems that Jingshi lets himself be captured by the Emperor Jingyan in order to spare Xiyang's life. But I think in the drama they changed it to Jingyan sacrificing himself for Xiyang 😭. And then apparently Jingshi is the one who stabs Xiyang??? WAT 😭

Also in the novel, Jingshi and Xiyang don't seem to divorce even though it was a loveless marriage. But in the drama it seems Xiyang regrets it all, divorces, and becomes allies with Jingyan. Idk I know nobody else here likes Xiyang but I feel like humiliating her like this is a bit too much 😭 at least in the novel even though her love is never reciprocated she also realizes that Jingshi would never abandon her (and her naivety in some way is proven right) and sacrifices herself to spare Jingshi from the Emperor's clutches.
