There’re 2 types of cousins.

Tang cousins:
Tang jie (elder) or Tang Mei (younger)
It means their fathers are sibling.

Biao cousins:
Biao Jie (elder)
Biao Mei (younger)
It means they’re related on their mothers side

All the cousins are Tang here so they’re related on the father side
Except Shen who is a Biao cousin. As her mother is a Rong sibling.

Yes the women are in charge, that’s why you don’t see the men here running the business.

Example Shan Chang, he’s not given a position of any importance

Shan Bao mentioned that her father and 2nd uncle went into becoming officials since they’re not in charge of business and 3rd uncle passed away.

Oh Interesting. So whoever marries into the Rong family, their kids will have the Rong surname or will they take the father's surname? i.e, if the ML were to marry the FL, their kids will be Rongs?

Yes that’s what married into the family means, the kids will take on the mother’s family name. Most of the time the daughters will marry out and take on the husbands’ family names. However Rong women run the household here, so they require men to marry in.  I don’t know if ML will choose to marry in later.
