Yanni as Liu JingLi✨️

The epitome of a mother born in the 1960s, Jingli was a beautiful woman who married young at the age of 19 in her hometown. Due to genetic compatibility issues, she gave birth to a child who came every night. Unable to avoid arguments, she moved to the county town with her husband and became a full-time housewife. Over a decade later, her brilliance and passion faded, and she struggled with the daily necessities of life, enduring her husband's fatigue and incompetence, hoping for nothing more than the safety of her children.

In 2003, her daughter Zhou Yi died suddenly after taking the college entrance examination. The death was classified as suicide by the employer, which completely ruined Bao Li's already unbearable life. After being abandoned by her husband in every possible way, she attempted suicide with her stupid son Lei Zhou, and remarried her savior Jia Bing, using time to heal her silent pain.

In 2008, seven years after Zhou Yi's death, Jingli was diagnosed with advanced kidney cancer. She also unexpectedly discovered her daughter had committed suicide, triggering a wave of grief. Deciding to embark on a final journey of her life, she took her sisters with her to uncover the truth behind Zhou Yi's death. Unexpectedly, she was repeatedly overwhelmed by the truth and reality that unfolded. She came to understand her "devilish" daughter and re-examined her own absurd life. Finally, with the help of her sisters and relatives, she released her irreversible obsession, faced her fate with equanimity, and used her remaining energy to prepare for her own death. This is her life.

Ren Xu Xi as Xiaofeng✨️

Northeastern hot peppers, as their name suggests, explode at the touch of a finger.

At the age of eighteen, Xu Xiaofeng was personally saddled with the factory director by her parents. Later, she was forced to run a hair salon that everyone knew was illegal. Years later, she was "redeemed" by an old patron and married. She thought she had made a new life, but unexpectedly, she was plunged into a new tragedy.

Her husband is an alcoholic and abusive woman who doesn't give Xiaofeng any dignity. Her son becomes even more indifferent and rejects her when he learns about her past identity from his classmates. Xiaofeng knows very well that "home" is not a comfortable place for her, but she is bound by the feudal ideas of that era and never talks about divorce.

Perhaps it is the inner repression that creates a sharp contrast between Xiaofeng's appearance. She is agile, bold, romantic, free and easy, and dares to love and hate. This is the Xu Xiaofeng that others see as she has not been fully explored.

When her old friend Jingli embarks on a quest for revenge, Xiaofeng joins her without hesitation, motivated by both sisterly loyalty and a desire to escape reality. As she follows Jingli on her quest, Xiaofeng gradually understands the complexities of human nature and the frustrations of life. With her sister's encouragement, she learns from her mistakes and bravely chooses to file for divorce, relinquishing custody of her son, and begins a new and vibrant life with police officer Lao Ma.

Ai Li Ya as Li Xiulian✨️

A simple, kindhearted, money-grubbing, and chain-smoking charlatan, she's a little-known "exorcist" in the county. Besides fortune-telling, she often accompanies Jingli. Xiaofeng is a silly girl who everyone loves to bully and harass.

Many years ago, Xiulian, along with her husband and son, was in a car accident while praying for blessings. The tragic loss of both parents made her a thorn in the side of her mother-in-law and her family. For years, Xiulian lived in self-blame, struggling to cope with the Jiang family's problems while also supporting her in-laws. Having also lost her children, Xiulian felt a deep empathy for the ticket book. Upon learning of Jingli's plan, despite her miserly nature and demanding 80 yuan per day for the driver's fee, she nonetheless participated in it wholeheartedly. Her limited, unplanned, and often unconventional approach ultimately contributed significantly. With the help of Jingli and Xiaofeng, she finally escaped the moral coercion of her in-laws and, for the first time, began to forgive herself. Following Jingli's passing, Xiulian reconsidered her life and embarked on a new, self-centered approach to her later years.

Xu Rouhan as Zhouyi✨️

Jingli's daughter was stabbed to death at the county fertilizer plant in 2003. After investigation, the police determined that it was suicide.

Zhou Yi was exceptionally beautiful, but tragically born lame. She placed all the blame on her family. Her parents, ignorant enough to give birth to a son with intellectual disabilities, experimented with a second child. This, she believed, was the beginning of the tragedy.

Zhou Yi has a beautiful face and a proud personality, always dreaming of a dazzling life, while Jing Li has been giving her disabled daughter a long-term repressive education, advising her to recognize herself, be down-to-earth and stable, and return to an ordinary life. This is undoubtedly the source of Zhou Yi's extreme rebelliousness and sensitivity in her later years.

Zhou Yi hates her family of origin and despises her parents' miserable relationship, yet she chooses a revengeful way of life, akin to a dual personality. At home, Zhou Yi is sensible and obedient, never talking back, but outside, she is cruel and ruthless.

Without Jing Li knowing anything, Zhou Yi bullied classmates, hooked up with rich second-generations, deliberately missed the college entrance examination in order to go abroad, and even faked a pregnancy to commit fraud. In order to get a job as a captain in an airline, dhe made everyone around her miserable. Finally, when she got involved in a fraud gang that was out of control and intended to kill people, she accidentally pushed himself into the abyss of death.

Tian Jiarui as Li Sibo✨️

Zhou Yi's sidekick and Xiulian's adopted son. He was gentle, considerate, and warm to everyone. He was adopted by Xiulian as a child, helping her overcome the grief of losing her husband and son. In high school, he became Zhou Yi's sidekick, providing warm companionship when she was hurt and becoming the only ray of light in her dark life. After Zhou Yi's death, Sibo frequently visited Jingli, bringing her much comfort.

In 2008, as Jingli's investigation into Zhou Yi's death deepened, Sibo's true nature gradually emerged. Beneath his warm and considerate exterior lay a dark, sensitive, and world-weary heart. Adopted by Xiulian, Sibo was enveloped in her almost insane, maternal love, feeling overwhelmed daily. He fell in love with the dazzlingly beautiful An Xin, but dared not confess his feelings. He could only secretly pursue her. When he discovered that his beloved was being bullied by Zhou Yi, Sibo approached her and became her personal henchman, so he could tip off An Xin. Sibo was drawn closer to Zhou Yi. Their unfortunate life experiences sparked a mutual empathy, and Sibo's constant protection instilled in her heart. During a drunken stupor, the two became overwhelmed, and Zhou Yi became pregnant. When she wanted to have the child and spend the rest of her life with Sibo, he refused. Repulsed by the constant reflections of himself in Zhou Yi, he didn't want to be entangled with this woman, which ultimately led to tragedy. After Zhou Yi's death, Sibo's frequent visits to Jingli were merely a convenient way to mislead her, preventing her from discovering the "truth" and her own. Ultimately, the truth came to light, and Sibo faced his fate.

Ooh wow, every character’s got such a background story... I saw some of this about ZY and LSB, but not the others ... are these from Weibo fans or the novel? Now I really wanna know what happened with ZY. Her past makes it seem like it could be a murder case… esp with how her life was entangled with some ppl...or with LSB possibly involved...

We’ll see what actually happened to her either in the intro or at the beginning of the drama. It’s probably meant to serve as a prologue to grab viewers attention. Like I mentioned before, it’s the same director as one of the dramas I’ve seen and he always likes to start his stories that way.
