Hello folks! I’m adding this post so that major errors in the official subtitles can be corrected after watching, and will update the post as I go back over the show and/or as new episodes come out. If you also have particular dialogue you feel was subtitled wrong that hasn’t been mentioned in the post, please give an episode and a timestamp and I will go back and translate it.

I’m focusing mainly on major errors that change the entire meanings of what was said, because this drama is using machine translation (AI).

Initial updates to this post will be slow because as of posting, 4 episodes are out.

EPISODE 1

PENDING

EPISODE 2

Main errors I spotted in this episode were occasional personal pronoun swaps. (Switching “I” for “you” or vice versa because the original Japanese dialogue doesn’t use pronouns, but relies on context.)

Episode 3 preview:

AE dialogue missing from the subtitles:

DIALOGUE: 「行こうか、夜遊び」
TRANSLATION: “Let’s go enjoy the nightlife.”

EPISODE 3

Rooftop conversation (18:55~19:21):
(Context: Starts when AE asks if Chiaki has someone he likes)

SUBTITLES
”I know who that is”
”Oh, you do?”
”I do.”
DIALOGUE

TRANSLATION
”Eh… [I like] AE”
”I know that.”
”So you [do] know…”

Episode 4 preview:

SUBTITLES “I am falling in love with Chiaki, but I will never tell him”
TRANSLATION ”I like Chiaki. I must tell him, about AE.”

EPISODE 4

This episode was A LOT better than previous episodes subtitle wise. Perhaps due to the lack of ambiguous or context-heavy dialogue but I didn’t notice many issues. The important things weren’t messed up.

Waiting for the bus (21:30)

SUBTITLES: “Let me lean on your shoulder.”
TRANSLATION: “I’ll be borrowing your shoulder for a bit. ”

NOTE: It’s kind of hard to explain why I’ve included this specific line, but it‘s probably because the subtitles feel aggressive/commanding while the feeling of the line is much more gentle, so more of a nitpick from me.

EPISODE 5

Internal monologue (Enaga/AE) (17:55)

SUBTITLES: “I’m the only one he makes flustered”
TRANSLATION: ”I‘m the only one thrown off by the change of pace / It is only me who is thrown off pace”

NOTE: This one is more about nuance, because the subtitles imply the existence of others who could be flustered by Chiaki, when it isn’t about that at all. This is a symptom of being two different people to Chiaki and while Enaga/AE clearly loves both sides of him, it’s very difficult to maintain two different relationships with one person without revealing his identity.

EPISODES 6/7
Inconsistent subtitles for the love hotel interaction.

Context: Kiss rejection
TRANSLATION: “Is it a ‘no’ if it’s me?” / “Is it because it’s me [that it’s a problem]?”
Chiaki’s inner monologue when remembering this scene:
DIALOGUE:「ダメなわけない…ダメなわけないのに」
TRANSLATION: ”It isn’t that there’s something wrong because it’s you…it isn’t that, but…”

Context: When piercing is about to go in
SUBTITLES: “This is going to hurt.”
TRANSLATION: “Is it okay? It’s going in”

Episode 8 preview:
They‘ve gone and done it again, and decided to put something AE doesn’t actually say at all in the subtitles…it’s pretty bad too.

SUBTITLES: “My heart already belongs to someone else.”
TRANSLATION:  “There is someone I like.” / “I already have someone I like.”

You are doing God's work

Thank you soo much! Hope you can check the first episode as well :)

When Chiaki rejected the kiss last week AE says "So is that a no?" This episode it's "Is something wrong with me?" and Chiaki outside the nightclub says "Of course not, how could there be anything wrong with you?" So episode 7 seems a more accurate translation to me. Manga is "You don't want me?"

Translates to “Is it not okay if it’s me?” / “Is it because it’s me [that you’re uncomfortable]?”

As a phrase, this doesn’t translate super well to English because any attempt to equate it to a sentence becomes clunky. It is AE recognising the possibility that because it’s him it may be what makes Chiaki uncomfortable. To add to this, if Enaga did the same thing, this would have gone differently, as Chiaki would have been more direct with his thoughts and feelings so it would not have needed saying. So, the two being the same person also informs a large part of the context.

Also, “Of course not” is a poor translation. It’s more like “It isn’t that it’s a no…”

Which is also a totally different nuance to that of the subtitles.
