Wooooooo, this one had been calling to me like a siren for many months, but this slump was making me avoid it, fearing I would not be able to enjoy it as I wanted to.... but then I binged it in one day π
I'm sure most of y'all have already seen it, but imma share my thoughts anyway π
I mean... a red flag obsessive, unhinged, sadistic, spoiled, domineering, cruel, and possessive FL?? In MY historical cdrama?!?!?! Yes, actually! This is everything The Princess Decree should've been but wasn't! The drama did such a good job of humanizing her and making her sympathetic, but also playful and fun. Like, idk, her character was so well-written and I'm not used to seeing that in verticals. Not to mention the amount of times she forced herself on ML, kissed him forcefully, pinned him down, and... had her way with him- like, girlie did not hold back!! And we love that! Then also with her enemies, btw- what she did to her brothers had me O-O. Her argument to ML really was "but I'm every bit as bad as them! Maybe even a little bit better!"
And the ML... I didn't love him, but.... he was very much giving mommy π© I mean the sternness and distance he treats her with, but then also the gentle softness and caretaker vibes? AAAACK! He said he hated her, but then ran to take care of her time and time again... not to mention the fact that his attempts to push her away when she forced herself on him were... cute at best π (not to minimize the sexual assault, ofc. That was definitely what that was, but idk, there was a lot more going on there). He was a compelling character with a lot of layers I just don't think the drama did the best job at showcasing. Prolly because it was mostly about FL (which we love to see, but does leave more complex love-interests feeling weak).
I don't usually care much for enemies to lovers 'cause MLs are always so nasty and abusive in those, but this... this I can get behind π The push-and-pull, the angst, the melodrama, the misunderstandings, the TEARS and the spicy make outs to (not) resolve them! I mean, this was such a treat!!!! For those who liked Forever Love but want the historical version, this is it! And the most shocking part... (ending spoiler) the fact that FL not only doesn't get punished for having the audacity to vie for the throne, but she actually GETS the throne AND her man!!! Bravo, drama, BRAVO!
I also really liked the... weird power situation between the leads. On one hand ML is a powerful religious figure that's hailed basically like a god, yet as a princess, FL doesn't exactly rank under him. So they're kinda on similar levels, but he's more like a royal pet and she's more like a royal heir- and idk... something about that tickles me π Like... a LOT.
Also the plot was weirdly interesting and coherent. I'm not used to saying anything positive about vertical plots, but this was quite pleasant. The villains did get a bit repetitive at the end, but, yknow, it is what it is and for the most part they made sense and weren't atrocious caricatures with worms for brains. The weakest part was the ending, which was needlessly rushed. Needed like 15 more min to bake, imo. Overall, highly recommend, just be prepared for very troubled leads and a lot of angst
Zhang Chi really is a sight for sore eyes, huh- But Wu Jia Lu is also stunning in this. They were SUCH an attractive couple <3
