Thoughts: I already yapped about this drama before, but for the sake of the template, I'll go at it again (we also got a lot of new faces lately, so I'm pushing one of my favs onto y'all to check out). A Dream Like the True Love is one of those rare, unique kind of dramas that commit to a sincere and heartfelt story about struggle and survival in a world hellbent on crushing every bold little flower brave enough to dare bloom. Everything from the story to the characters is well-crafted and consistent, with only some hiccups here and there due to the short runtime. The biggest issue the drama has, and the only reason it couldn't be a 10/10 for me, is the time-skip and ending, which felt completely disjointed from the rest of the drama. If you've watched any number of cdramas, minis, or otherwise, you'll notice this drama isn't like them. It's a very intimate watch, following the lives of everyday people in difficult situations, trying to survive. There are no heroic princes or generals, or beautiful, kindhearted princess needing saving. There are normal people, trying to find a sliver of joy amidst the tragedy. Now, for the cherry on top... the role reversal. I was surprised and giddy to find so many RR tropes I love in one minidrama packaged so beautifully. It isn't like other RR minidramas with a heavy focus on femdom and a love story that blissfully exists between two individuals in a vacuum; instead, it takes the role reversal a step further, involving society, gender bias, and power play into the mix thus creating a realistic and heartbreaking situation for our leads (especially our ML) to navigate. This isn't the fluffy or steamy kind of role reversal story; it's taboo, it's unfair, it's even abusive, but it's all soothed by the intimate and gentle romance between the leads, which, though more egalitarian, still has role reversal elements too. Overall, if you're craving a change of pace from pretty much anything, be it cdramas in general, minidramas, or even the usual role reversal dramas, I strongly recommend you give A Dream Like the True Love a watch! TL;DR: A standout minidrama in quality, heart, and role reversal. Following the story of two broken souls: a maid turned businesswoman and a nobleman turned concubine, as they find solace in one another and navigate their individual and joint misfortunes. Drenched in a heavy dose of melancholy, stolen moments, and injustice, this drama delivers a sincere and heartfelt experience not often found in dramaland.
