I am a little concerned about the romantic development on Sun's side. There are only 4 episodes left, and I am worried if that will be enough time to adequately establish a genuine romantic connection. I think as things are Jay's feelings have been established to a point to make any relationship plausible within the time left. I hope to see some romantic development from Sun's side in the next episode.

I look forward to episode 7.

I'm I mistaken or does Sun for sure know it was Jay while he was in the bunny outfit the first time.

I would assume so. The fact that there have been no indication on Sun's part that knew Jay from before makes me wonder if this is a plot hole.

I managed to catch up with Payback yesterday and I was having similar concerns when I realized that there are genuinely only four episodes left. I think we can be certain that Jay is very much into Sun, but Sun still seems at times uncomfortable with Jay's advances.

And yeah I am bit confused too that is Sun aware that Jay has recognized him from their first encounter.

Now starting on my binge catch-up of "Deep In" (Viki). Not even ten minutes into the first episode and it's completely won me over!

Remember to watch the extra scenes after the end credits!

Thanks for the reminder. Although I've turned off "automatically play next episode" so many times on Viki for precisely this reason, it keeps turning itself back on, grrrr!

I watched some series and I noticed that smoking is in almost every series. It really annoys me because they make it look like it is cool and the bad boy characters always smoke. They never show the bad sides like addiction and health problems and seem to kinda promote smoking. Even in many bls this seems to be implemented.

I see many kids vape here and there even when they are still under 16.

And smoking too. But vaping is more used by children. It is a kind of sensitive topic for me because I know a person distantly that died from lung cancer (not personally) but the story sounds painful.

And one person in my family started smoking so I just noticed how much smoking was in series.

My take is that people who are young get a little bit influenced by this.

What is your take? Did you notice that many bls and other series/dramas use smoking more

My step dad died from lung cancer. He was a heavy smoker. Like a pack or more a day. My mom was a nurse, a hospice nurse to be precise, so me, my mom, and another nurse took care of him at home. I remember the night he died in the living room. My mom made me stay in her room but I still remember the sound of the oxygen machine still going. It was deafening in the silence. My mom came in the hug me and told me they had to keep it on until the ambulance arrived but that he was dead. That sound still haunts me.

I was so grateful when my mom quit smoking when I was a teen. And I'm so glad I always thought it was gross and also too expensive.

But I agree, a lot of asian media make both smoking and drinking seem like no big deal. At least china has similar laws to the USA in that regards. While usa hasn't banned the use of tobacco, it did put a federal ban on advertising/marketing in media which really reduced influence to teens. I still remember when they had the cigarette commercials though. Loved the camel one to the point my grandma bought me a stuffed camel and took me to ride one.

China's ban is almost the same, but also emphasize a reduction in tobacco use in media as well. Example, in Gardian, Zhao Yun Lan is a heavy smoker (book), so when they adopted it to drama they switched it to a candy sucker.

Oh my goodness, you're just hit on one of my biggest gripes, especially with Chinese BLs. Aside from the health issues, it's such a turn-off to me. Kissing an ashtray: Ick!

My dad was a heavy smoker (50-60 cigarettes per day) but he stopped the day I was born and never smoked again. My grandpa was a smoker, so were his children. My aunt died of lung cancer, her sister had mouth cancer, both related to smoking. I was lucky enough to be born in a non-smoking family, I never tried and always thought my money was better invested in books and movies. At the age of 15, most of my friends were smoking. It was supposed to be cool, I assume.

Back to series and dramas (not only BL but also straight), I was under the impression Chinese series were showing more commonly main leads smoking. The latest example I have in mind is Winter Sun ep 7. Not only the main couples are sharing a cigarette, the second leads are also smoking when under stress or just like that.

image.pngimage.pngIn Thai BL, I mostly saw it in school/university series, either the bad guys or when in a lot of stress (break-up, death in the family), and most of the time the character had quit smoking but needed a cigarette to release the stress. For ex in Head 2 Head when Van and Farm are breaking up, Farm lights up a cigarette while fighting with Van.

image.pngOn the other hand the alcohol consumption is crazy in Korean and Japanese series, it surprised me 5 years ago when I started watching Asian series. I don't think I like it, but in a way I got used to seeing characters getting wasted in series.

As long as it doesn't romanticize drinking and smoking, I kind of tolerate it. That's another reason why I hate Fahlanruk (I know I'm ranting on this one), because it makes it look like the only solution to all of their problems is getting wasted. The alcohol consumption and drinking scenes in this drama are even higher than the amount of NC scenes (that already equals 25-30% of the whole series).

Exactly I think in Chinese BL they often smokes and in Korean and Japanese it's more the alcohol that is omnipresent.

I showed this picture to my best friends and told them it perfectly represents this emoji : 😆

Now I'll think of Phuwin every time I see that emoji ! 😆

Today I spent 10 hours attaching crystals to my best friend's dress, and I'm exhausted. I think I'll only watch about 10 minutes of Love Upon a Time, then continue reading Me and Thee before calling it a night.

@Portugalia67 and Tiffany

I'm talking about mainland China and the dramas shown in mainland. Chinese BLs are never aired in mainland china so they dont have to adjust their characters smoking habits to obey the laws.

It is not something that I pay enough attention to for it to be conspicuous to me.

However, your post sparked a question in my mind - how does production create smoking scenes? Do they use fake cigarettes, and if so, what are the harmful effects of them if any? Furthermore, if fake cigarettes are not used, what if an actor is not a smoker or a quitter/retired smoker and they do not want to smoke, how do they handle such a situation?

I said I had a question and went on to ask a series of them lol

Also (I should have just done an edit, but anyway) I doubt production companies will try to cut down the number of smokers and cigarettes shown in series, so long as smoking remains main part of Thai and Chinese culture. It is important to remember that while we may have a negative view of smoking, we are considered the West, and Western culture and ideals are not universal; there are many other cultures outside of our social spaces. If a series is to remain authentic to the country it is made in, with and for the people and culture of that country, I find it difficult to imagine production companies not sticking to the realities of the particular country, in order to filter the series based on outsider views. Despite the recent global boom of the BL industry, domestic audience sentiments are still intrinsic to production decision. The sentiments of international audiences may be considered to some extent, but local Thai viewership, for example, in terms of ratings and sponsorship would take precedent in my view.

Furthermore, is the authenticity of BL (Asian gay/queer media) that made it a niche entertainment, not intruded on when we begin to apply our international value systems and culture?

Just to be clear I am not advocating for smoking. I am not lecturing anyone in order to change minds. I am just offering another perspective to the discourse.
