It actually gets worse in horror department if you want a spoiler for that. As for the ending its kind of bittersweet, but I full on feel like is definitely a sad ending. Because of the hidden horror element that lead the ending.

Okay here we go. Strap in! I don’t know where you ended so forgive me if I back up to far. So main guy downloads his 'companion' and his boyfriend starts noticing him pull away and also hears an advertisement for the ai companion and grabs his phone while cheater is sleeping. (Whoever touches an owners phone can suddenly see that owners companion). At first he ignores is, then cheater starts noticing him talking to himself so ends up touching his phone too. Then a montage of them ignoring each other to be with their companions. Then, out of no where, cheater's companion tells him he can be real if he gets his boyfriends DNA and KILLS him. Cheater has some morals and refuses, but companion keeps hinting at getting the deed done so they can be together forever. (giving myself chills) then cheater starts to notice things with his DNA are missing. His companion starts whispering in his ear that he overheard boyfriend planning with his own companion to kill him. Cheater actually tried to murder boyfriend when boyfriends companion stops him and then it comes to light that cheaters companion planned it all to get cheater to kill boyfriend. They both end up deleting their companions and splitting up permanently in a sad but peaceful way. The end.

There's a big ingredient to this which is missing from your discussion: the huge smoking gender gap in East Asia.

Let that sink in! While the gender gap in these two countries is particularly extreme, it's similar throughout East Asia, including Thailand.

Thus, smoking is seen as very much a male/macho thing and un-ladylike - and likewise in BL, one could extend this to cultural perceptions of what is seme and what is uke.

In Western countries, in contrast, smoking these days isn't associated with gender, and in quite a few Western countries, the smoking rate among women is higher.

Absolutely. Also disgusting and a major turn-off - and I find Korea's toxic culture of forced drinking particularly disturbing.

Thankfully, this has been dramatically declining in Japan (per good article in South China Post: "Nearly 44 per cent of Japanese in their twenties never drink alcohol."

I finally finished my written exams. On friday I recieve the results. I hope it went well.
