Hi All!

This is my first time writing on a forum, so I hope I am doing this correctly. In a couple of months (August), I will be studying abroad in Japan for a year at a school in Tokyo.  Any recommendations for things to do or must-see places in Tokyo and greater Japan? I will be there for almost 8 months and have several smaller breaks where I could travel longer distances to visit places. I want to go to places that are not just tourist spots. I have taken a couple of years of Japanese, and my area of study is Japanese history and I love nature, so keep that in mind.

Any Recs?

Thanks!

Hi Jacelynn,

I'm happy for you and a little envious!  What are your interests? I would try to dig into those and visit related locations / interview people etc.

For me, some of the most interesting themes and time periods are related to Japan's interaction with the outside world:

Bakumatsu Yae no Sakura and Atsu Hime for example, have segments at the end of episodes showing real life, modern day locations

Renaissance Culture and Japan’s Christian Century (1550–1650) here's a website with many interesting lectures the YouTube channel has many more videos in Japanese

Japanese - Korean relations: for example The Zainichi Korean Experience  or The North Korean Bubble
