We're overdue for a review. I tried both versions - the original and stinky and spicy (no not on the same day :-)) and can review both.
Overall, it's a solid thumbs-up from me. It suited my taste buds and was worth the 7-week wait. I enjoyed it more than when I tried it in the shop.
There was not much difference between the two versions. Despite the claim of being stinky, I couldn't detect a significant difference in stinkiness compared to the original version. I think the biggest difference was that the stinky version had 2 extra bags of ingredients and a bigger bag of chilli oil.
The smell is definitely infused into the soup, and also from the preserved bamboo shoots. I'm very used to eating bamboo, so I don't find the smell to be anything of note, and the soup is also no big deal for me. But bear in mind that I eat shrimp paste and fermented tofu, so my tolerance for stinky/pungent food is very high. Lol!
The dish is absolutely on the strong side, so if your palate tends towards the delicate and light, you will find it quite overwhelming. Compared a bowl of Japanese Udon Noodles Soup with a bowl of Laksa, and this one is definitely on the Laksa side of the scale. It's probably even more potent considering the chilli and vinegar, and unusual smell.
You can adjust the chilli and vinegar level (they come in separate satchels). I used the entire packet of chilli oil and find it nice and spicy. Asian spicy rather than Caucasian spciy ;-). Again, please be aware that I can eat Caroline Reapers so my chilli tolerance if quite high :-).
