I actually think the camera man / cinematographer / director realized or knew how great Tan's eye acting and micro expressions were and that's why we got so many close ups.

I think it's interesting to see how they use the red eyes as some sort of emotional barometer as well as a an indicator of demonic power use.

This is why I'm always salty. They're robbing from the poor (XL) and giving it to the rich (Jing) like liddi said.
