Technically it wasn't really Chi You's kingdom, but even then the interpretation is heartbreaking. 

Both Chi You and Xiang Liu didn't really have much of a personal stake in protecting or fighting for Sheng Nong Kingdom. Chi You lived in Jiu Li (which was on the periphery of Sheng Nong). His people were persecuted and Chi You was initially hunted by Zhu Rhong, a Great General of the Sheng Nong Kingdom. Xiang Liu was born in the ocean and at some point he was enslaved and made to fight in the slave death match arena located in Sheng Nong Kingdom. Neither of them had blood ties to the royal family of Sheng Nong or the noble deity families of Sheng Nong. But they both became very close and loyal to people who did have that kind of personal stake. Chi You became the Flame Emperor's only disciple and made a promise to his son, Prince Yu Wang. Xiang Liu was saved by Gong Gong. They both ended up fighting ostensibly for Sheng Nong but really out of loyalty to those people (the Flame Emperor, Yu Wang and Chi You's comrades in Chi You's case, and Gong Gong and Xiang Liu's comrades in Xiang Liu's case). 

Both of them were unable to abandon their loyalty for anything, not even the woman they loved.

Again the one on the left side of his neck (you can faintly see those two on his shoulder here as well :3):

This is Xiang Liu after realising that Xiao Yao is a dead weight and ridding himself of her ;-). He's dancing with joy :-)

That's him after dying from those 10,000 arrows and waking up like Bai Qian from Eternal Love realizing all he went through was a tribulation :)
