The cover image for Swing Girls looks so much like others I've seen via Japan Film Foundation Theatre I thought I must have seen it already=D =D Nope, it's one I've been meaning to get around to though.
Anyway, JFF is a great resource for legal, subtitled Japanese films. They make a small selection available online and change them every three months. There tends to be a lot of food and coming of age, including young people finding new hobbies and friendships through them.
There are only five for this quarter though and one of them is a sequel to a series I haven't tracked down. You can poke through their past films too for ideas to look for elsewhere. My thoughts on those I've seen here (custom list so it's easy to click through to the MDL pages too). Itomichi is the one I most recommend to you.
Of the five currently available via JFF, I've only seen The Lines that Define Me (during the 2024 JFF Online Festival i think). It's less exuberant than the poster for Swing Girls but it still might suit, it's less a school club and more mentor/student and a friend (I think, it's been a while and they had a LOT of arts-related CoA that period). And of course it's free, legal, subtitled and right there, easy to find so it's worth a go =D
Anyway, JFF is a fantastic resource, even if this quarter's selections may be a bit disappointing compared to past offerings. Well worth looking in on as they change.
